Otaku isn't a label exclusive to anime/manga fans and at the same time it isn't something to embrace ether. The term is offensive to many people and watching anime as much I do I don't consider myself an Otaku more a fan.

I mean Its no different from being a fan of sports, video games, movies and etc. Its a shame that anime fans are automatically placed in the Otaku category when they enjoy the medium in the same way.

i consider someone an otaku when they watched/know alot about a unpopular/old anime, but its not an otaku if its just a faggot who only watches popular/new anime all the time.

To me, someone is an otaku when their obsession with anime and manga impedes on their life in any way - whether it's lack of sleep from staying up all night watching/reading, lack of social interaction, skipping meals, etc.

Or someone who has a very, very expensive collection when they really shouldn't be buying merch and they should be paying their bills, lol.

At the same time I find it funny how Americans can decorate their studies/dens/bedrooms with wall-to-wall sports paraphernalia and people don't even think to judge, but I get little "oh..."s for having a Sailor Moon poster above my bed and a Madoka poster above my desk.

I dunno. People contest the meaning of "otaku" all the time. I suppose you're only an otaku if you want to be called an otaku.

I like being called an otaku. I'm an avid fan, but I wouldn't think of myself as a shut-in or anything - anime is just one of my many hobbies. I don't have posters or daikamuras or thousands of dollars of merchandise, though I do have a few figures. I keep up with my favorite shows, but don't watch anime for days at a time. I have a life outside of the fandom and I enjoy many things outside of the fandom.

I use "otaku" for myself to describe my interest in anime and manga, which is how it is typically used outside of Japan. Nothing more, nothing less.

Otaku is some one who spends most of hes time doing or thinking about their hobbie and this hobbie can be anything.
People who are shut in and watch anime all day are otakus, but they are not otakus because they are shut in but because they watch anime all day or play white models it can be anything really.

What you people are talking about when you hear otaku are probably the nerdy neets(Not in Education, Employment, or Training) people you see in anime dramas and movies. But all otakus aren't like that i know many people who call them self nerds(otaku) who are working like any other person.

So calling some one a shut in just because they are an otaku is just prejudgment, don't judge anyone before you at least meat them.

I believe an Otaku is someone who spends a fair amount of time on various forms of Japanese pop culture like
Touhou, Light Novels, Visual Novels, Manga, Anime, Galge, etc.
