I been watching anime a lot lately, and what has been driving me crazy is the constant Yaoi reference in any or most animes these days. I mean really, it's getting kind of old. Am I over-reacting about this or is it really becoming tiresome? I feel not everything is "yaoi" and I understand it is popular, especially among female fans, but is it REALLY that popular especially in the Japanese view point of mangas and anime?

the only hint of yaoi I've seen in anime was that one yaoi fangirl in Oregairu. oh, and free. but I haven't/won't watch that one.

well, the reason (I think) that it happens a lot is because MAJORITY of the female Otaku audience are fans of Yaoi and this can be used to draw in the biggest crowd.

Although you really don't see it too often outside of comedies (Baka and Test comes to mind]) or shows that are directed TO said audience (Hakkenden sort of comes to mind, but I'm not 100% sure and I don't think it is straight up Yaoi)

Also, for a cultural standpoint, the Japanese don't really have as many problems with homosexuality as America does

As a guy, I am sort of sick of it too, but as long as Yaoi stays to Yaoi Specific shows (same goes with Yuri) I would be fine, but i just don't let it bother me

See... if a guy started this thread, he would be ridiculed, flamed, his thread closed, and banned.

That is the hypocrisy we live in today.

As for the thread itself, one only sees yaoi/shounen ai if one actively looks for it. I want to say the market in Japan is pretty even in what gets distributed in terms of Yuri/Yaoi; however, what we see is one or two actual Yaoi stuff in the West.

I mean if you didn't know "homogae" is pretty popular but you almost never see anyone here talk about it.

I haven't really noticed all that much, maybe because I don't care. I just watched "Free!" and I didn't feel there were really even many hints at yaoi anything. It definitely has the potential to be and very well may go in that direction but if it does I'll either stop watching it or continue to watch it if the plot develops well.

The yaoi fangirls in anime can be pretty funny though, SNAFU and Chiho's classmate in "Hataraku Maou-sama" for instance gave me a good laugh.

As far as what fits the actual genre of Yaoi, there's an audience for it so they're going to keep it coming.

uuhhh.. Not alot of Yaoi animes get made.
There are animes with BL hints yeah, but not a lot of yaoi made.
Maybe one a year if they're lucky.

As for the thread itself.
There's a market for it, simple as that.
Also, I don't see it that often. Depends what you're watching really.
It's also easy to ignore too, you can easily interpret the boys as just being friendly with one another.
Unless it's blatant BL, then there is no avoiding it.

Not really sure what you're asking, tbh.

So I'm just going to answer on what I think you're asking. Yes I do get annoyed when I watch a regular anime, and these two male characters are forming some sort of bromance with one another and making passes at one another, but nothing ever happened.

That's when I get annoyed.

Like Marvin Gaye said, they should just "get it on"... instead of doing nothing.

I think the traps are fine they are more of a comedic thing. It is the thought of full out BL that gets people off of specific animes.

but the main character getting all googoo for the traps are a bit offputting. ever see my bride is a mermaid? it starts off as funny but it gets old fast.(the yaoi) stuff

Oh. Well I totally read the question wrong.

Proper answer to the OP:
I think yaoi traps are pretty popular with female anime viewers. I'm on a Yaoi forum, and they talk about yaoi out of the straightest characters in anime... even though I don't see the yaoi traps myself.

It's pretty much the same way with how most characters are female loli's... even though it seems like everyone is sick of those loli characters, they keep making them. There must be a huge percentage of audience who are into loli's.

There is a certain tolerance everyone has for that theme. It goes both ways before something becomes excessive and bland.

Random panty shots for no apparent reason, and with the recent anime Free! random shirt taking off is pointless to actually develop something.

I will say that taking your shirt off to swim is appropriate this is very analogous to Gargantia's belly dancing episode, "is it inappropriate to show that much skin?" it is serving a purpose and not for the sake of being there without a cause.

~~

Addressing Seto no Hanayome it is a running gag, there is like a total of 5 times (I can remember) where Nagasumi goes gay for Masa, but in its defense so does his mom. Masa is charming gentleman that is how is portrayed.

TL;DR, if at any point "fanservice" serves a purpose other than the sake of eyecandy I personally do not call it fanservice.
