I've been on the interwebz for a long time, and found out there is a slang term called weeaboo, originally being used in a webcomic (keep in mind having NOTHING to do with Japanese anything) then evolving to mean someone who wishes they were Japanese when they are not. Nowadays when I hear the word its a derogatory term for someone who just watches anime in general.

Personally I've only been called it once back in 2011, and even though the word is as silly as calling somone a poopyhead or boogerbrain, for some reason the word weeaboo bothers me, not only because it applys to ONLY anime/manga fans, but because theres no other word like it. (I never heard of a bad term meaning someone who wishes they were italian or greek.)

Whats your opinion on the word, have you been called one yourself? And how do you deal with it when called one?

It's a ridiculous term... that's always misused.

You get called weeaboo for including one Japanese word in your sentence.

It's pretty much on the same level as "troll". You'll get called "troll" nowadays if you have a strong opinion that is not like the majority's.

ooo is that what a troll is having an opinion... kinda reminds me of Hyouka thread...

honestly weeboo hasn't been used a lot lately to my lurking knowledge (I must not lurk a lot).

if you have an entire tumblr blog dedicated to anime and you weren't Japanese. yeah i'd call you a weaboo.

if all you know about japan is jpop anime and jp video games then yeah i'd call you a weaboo.

if you use multiple japanese words in your sentences and you aren't japanese. yeah id most definitely call you a weaboo.

I was called it because some people were bashing anime randomly and I just stood up to defend anime. like GAB said the word weeaboo is misused a lot. But is it really wrong to appreciate another culture besides yourown?

Also, does it affect how you guys watch anime since theres this minor stigma going around since the birth of this word? For some reason it affects my anime watching, how does one brush it off?

Only the last one might apply. Being a fan of anime or Japanese music or video games doesn't make you a weaboo. A weaboo, as the slang goes, is a Japanophile that claims extensive knowledge of Japanese culture while in fact being mostly ignorant. A person who likes any of the above things even to obsessive levels, is only a weaboo if they are also deluded into thinking that it somehow gives an understanding of the greater Japanese culture. Even using japanese words doesn't make you a weaboo unless you are using them incorrectly and because it makes you feel "more japanese" Its got to be a combination of ignorance, self professed expertise, and culture idol worship that makes a weaboo.

Really, the term weaboo basically amounts to a term to mock someone for their general interests. Who really cares how obsessed someone is with Japan, it's culture, or media if it's genuinely not hurting anyone? Maybe if they get offensive with their ignorance, but calling them a name isn't going to stop it. You'd be better off teaching them how ignorant they are and letting them enjoy whatever they enjoy.
Or, y'know, ignore it considering a considerable amount of these people are just kids anyway.

I've been called a weeaboo before, but I don't let it affect me very much. I think it's a silly term. But as far as it affecting my anime viewing, no, as far as I'm concerned, if people have a problem with anime and the people who watch it, then they can suck it.

True, one cannot let a word hurt himself unless he makes it hurt himself. I just dont get why anime fans have the 'privilege' of having such a word tied to them. I guess its like startrek and 'trekkies.'

The anime fans seem to get all the negative words (that don't even fit the description) for some reason. Like otaku is not really only for anime only... but every time otaku is mentioned... it's referred to anime fans. *shakes my head*

Doesn't matter what people think, we're all awesome in my mind.

I really hate that term weeaboo. I feel like if you have a true interest in something then it is fine. It is not as if I am wanting to become Japanese, using Japanese terms in my usual vocabulary, though I do use it when teasing my friends. I just truly have an interest in anime and manga. Weeaboos are mostly ignorant and think they have a hold on what Japanese culture is when they are completely of no knowledge of it.

It's just a word, derogatory or praiseworthy. Over my life time I have been called many things. Some down right crude, I just smile but considor the source!
( and visualize them a few years from now with fucked up teeth and piss stains on their cruches and if it's a girl sagging flat breasts below the belly button) I can live with a few name calling. And since I never heard that word all I can say is " Weeboos wobble but they don't fall down"
