Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, more or less universally.

Once they like FMAB, then I recommend The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. These two shows are like the cornerstones of modern anime for me.

I've roped two mates into attending an FMAB marathon without them having seen it before. One fell swoop.

It has to be Death Note, not only is it an excellent anime but it is an excellent TV Show as well by any standards. Unlike the big 3, Death note is easily approachable with only 37 episodes I believe and it has a very strong dub (as I am aware people are very skeptical about watching subbed anime when they first start out - well I certainly was atleast ). It is a great modern day introduction to anime for those who were not hooked by classics like pokemon, dbz, gundam etc in their childhood

I would disagree on that

Lucky Star has just too many reference to other anime, at least in the first half for newcomers and is pretty uneventful, which may not be so engaging to new people and i don't think the dub is all that great, and a good dub is usual nice for new viewers but that's my opinion... I wil concede it is adorable though

For my aruable recommendations I recommend... Probably Ouran Highschool Host Club for any "Normal" girls, has plenty of man-service and is very good and quite funny, although you may need to explain a few things about it (IE honorifics, and maybe visual novels and manga for that one episode)

for "Normal" guys I would say probably Soul Eater or Death Note... Something that isn't absolutely huge and endless at least, with a pretty good dub

For other people i would just need to know what they need to watch, and pick things they might like based on that... Oh and Steins; Gate may not be that bad either if you can get your hands on a dubbed copy

I would never introduce any of my friends to anime. No one knows I watch anime, and I plan on keeping it that way.

All my friends that I would try to get to watch anime already like it. Yet, the only anime I've ever been able to get my wife to like was afro samurai. She's a huge comic book fan but she hated the marvel anime thing too. All the others she won't even try to watch even though I think she'd enjoy many of them.

Cowboy Bebop. The movie. Probably the best one to give a shot on..... Cause it really does not need back story and they went WAY over the top with the animation quality. Also Black Lagoon probably is good one to give a shot.\

Why I say this is because they really are western Shows with that WTF Japan spice. I am sorry to say but most anime does not have the complexity and long term staying power of many US tv shows. Not all but on average I will say I find the ones that are most western like the best. Pscyo-pass, GITS, Cowboy Bebop, Steins:gate, Black Lagoon and Trigun really have that complex plot many TV fans here want and crave. They go much farther than ours do because of being WTF japan and animation allows you to have some fun live action can't always do.

I've only ever introduced anime to one person. There was this girl in my class that wondered why I liked anime so much since she just thought it was cartoons. So I old her that I bet I could fine an anime even she would like.... So I showed her Fruits Basket . She loved it. Other than that most of the people I hang around already love anime and as for the friends that don't I just could never convince them so I never bring it up if they don't ask.

The first one was Sailor Moon. I was young when it use to air on tv, so it was easy to get my friends interested. Now it's not that easy to show off awesome animes to anyone. Nothing like getting blank stares as you excitedly tell them about all the animes you are watching.
