Heyhi!
Just so you're not horribly confused, I took the time to edit your thread a bit.
I've swapped the name and description to better represent the topic being discussed, and moved it to the "Anime" subforum :D

Aside from that, Welcome to the NHK is my friends favorite show ever, but I've not fully watched it myself yet :C

This show is one of my favorites. I love dark comedies like this where it deals with serious situations, but has a comical edge to it. I actually wrote a paper in abnormal psychology in my freshman year of college on Sato (we had to pick any fictional character with a mental disorder). I would recommend this anime to anyone.

I thought it was great. Dark comedy really clicks with me for some reason, and the characters were well-done and believable when they weren't being comedically absurd. It could have done a better job at provoking audience emotions, but the plot is still quite a rollercoaster, and the ending was very appropriate. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the genre.

the manga was alot better at provoking emotion. but if they stuck to close to the manga, it would have gone really really dark

Interesting bit of triva: About the first half of Welcome to the NHK streamed legally on CR back in 2008. (It was an ad for it at TAN that first led me to CR).

It was the dubbed version if I recall correctly. I believe the dub was originally done by ADV, and the rights probably reverted back to Gonzo before Funimation later license rescued the series. That would explain it being here, as Gonzo was one of the first companies to work with CR, and that it was pulled before completing probably coincided with the timing of Funimation's license rescue.

Does anyone else remember that?

Originally it was a novel. The manga story is different from the novel. The anime follows the novel, not the manga.
