I thought I would throw her in the deep end of the pool and show her Elfen Lied. But I was wondering if there was a better one. =)

Seriously, Elfen Lied? lol, you sure she wouldn't be more interested in a show with more obvious crossover appeal to girls?

Almost anything by the Brains Base anime studio would work.
My Little Monster
Natsume Yuujinchou
Durarara!!
Baccano!

We've also got:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Ouran High School Host Club (this one especially)
Clannad
Fruits Basket
Inu x Boku SS
Soul Eater
The Devil is a Part-Timer!

If you really were considering showing her Elfen Lied, the she might be one for seinen shows:
Black Lagoon
Cowboy Bebop
etc.

I mean, I'm pretty sure a lot of those are good enough, depending on what you're looking for. Some of them are romances, some are action shows, fantasy shows, comedies... I tried to cover all the bases.

I don't have a girlfriend. I do have a couple of friends who are less familiar with anime than I am, and I recommend to them things that I think highly of, and which suit their individual tastes.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is. Not all girlfriends are alike. Why is it especially interesting what we'd introduce to one? And surely there's a similar thread somewhere (I'm going to go look).

Elfen Lied? LOL. The series has some of the most graphic scenes in the first 7 minutes of anime history. Uh for me, it would be something more lighthearted like Clannad, Toradora, Sakurasou Pet no Kanojo or something.

I know not all are alike, but I was just looking for a generally awesome anime that reoccurred several time in peoples posts. I just figured Elfen Lied was probably a little to hard to start off with. And I searched for this topic but nothing came up lol

My wife, who doesn't like anime, has become very interested in Chihayafuru. That might be a good one to start with.

Some of the ones my wife has liked:
Toradora
Ouran Host Club
Date A Live
The Devil is a Part Timer
Brothers Conflict
Fruits Basket
Cat Planet Cuties
Angel Beats (she stopped after about 6 episodes because she hates crying)
High School of the Dead (she likes zombie movies)
Fairy Tale
One Piece
Bodacious Space Pirates

Ones that she refuses to watch because she hates to cry:
Clannad
Elfen Lied

Depends completely on her personality.

Only show her Elfin Lied if she's never seen an anime and is extremely turned on by cruelty, blood, and gore coming from children and pets.

If she's not turned on by that stuff, then you may drive her away from anime forever.

If she doesn't want to watch an anime, tell her to watch the first eight episodes of Clannad--and tell her that if she doesn't want to continue after that, she doesn't have to--but if she DOES want to continue, then she has to watch the rest. Fuko's arc ends on the 9th episode, and if she's a sensitive person, she'll definitely want to see how it ends.

If she just likes romance and drama, watch Kanon with her first, followed by Clannad. Don't choose anything too long or harsh as her first anime, it's probably not a good idea.

On the other hand, if you want to break up with her, show her Elfen Lied. Or hey, better yet, show her School Days.

Well I no longer have a girlfreind to ask, but my mother and sister like Mai-hime.
They also like Naruto and bleach oddly.

But almost anything Studio Ghibli is probably a winner for an introduction to anime, Princess mononoke is a good one for it I'd say.
Unless they really like violent movies and horror, steer away from Elfin liad, Higurashi or Berzerk I would advise.

Boku no Pico, can't go wrong with that when watching an anime with your girlfriend.

As stated above, I would go w/ something like:

Toradora
Clannad
Oran High Host Club
Angel Beats
Fruits Basket

Unless she is more into seinen material.
Then I would go w/:

Elfen Lied
Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)
Black Lagoon
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
