Even with time, staying friends is difficult when time just flow by itself.

They didn't necessarily succeed, but they did obtain some form of bonding friendship despite how brief it was. In Rebuild it's not as romantically depressing and they get along a lot easier, I think. Though that's only based on 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance because so far that's the movie Asuka is officially introduced in the new films.

The fourth movie will probably come out sometime in 2013.
