To each its own i guess. But have you seen monster? it mixes everything and i think is way underrated. "Another" is pretty good also. Gory animes like hellsing and elfen lied are classics. But what do you like? im open to seeing something really good i dont discriminate lol

Mostly because they're very hard to do well. We get a couple every year, but I don't expect that ratio to go up much. The more risk you take on the greater chance of the whole thing going to waste, so producers are really very careful.

There's also the World of Warcraft effect. When there's a very strong existing title (like Hellsing Ultimate) there's a feeling that even if you have a good story, if you can't rival what people will compare you to, you're doomed to fail.

Edit:

But still, there were a fair few last year.

Another (link).
Black Rock Shooter.
Btooom! (link).
Fate/Zero (link).
Kokoro Connect (link).
Psycho-Pass (link).
Shin Sekai Yori (link).
(And probably more I didn't notice).

Most of them don't sell very well with the exception of the Nisioisin/VOFAN/Shaft/Aniplex Monogatari series which I certainly classify as intellectual horror. Aside from that horror doesn't sell well. Shows like Another bombed in sales.

Psycho Pass was intellectual and sold well.

Shinsekai Yori was intellectual and sold very poorly.

All good points, I guess its mostly about luck. I gave a shot to psycho pass but it seemed too minority report for me lol maybe ill go back to that one later. And hellsing is a classic but come on just because there are great animes out there you cant be afraid of trying. The guy who created Death note just got another instant classic in attack on titan. It can be done i just hope that one comes out that blows my mind soon lol.

Attack on Titan is Hajime Isayama's debut manga. I don't think it's related to Death Note at all.

Oh gotcha. He also directed Guilty Crown and episodes 5-6 of the Aoi Bungaku Series. Cool guy.

Thanks a lot i really appreciate it. And i loved elfen lied, gantz (ik what you mean the manga is wayyy better it goes in a completely different direction) , future diary is one of my fave but you have to read the manga and watch the last seconds of the anime to get true closure... ill try the other ones you mentioned thanks.

To answer the original thread title: "Why aren't there more horror/gory/intellectual animes?"

- Because anime producers will only consider what the audience within Japan wants, I doubt they care about what the audience outside of Japan wants.
The age demographic of anime viewers in Japan is pretty much from 10-17... the anime producers are going to cater for them first and foremost. That is why there are sooooo many romantic comedy, shoujo and shounen animes.

For the rest of us, we'll just have to worm and wiggle our way to find the animes that suit our taste.

To answer the additional detail:

- Pretty much what everyone has listed... There is a bit of horror in Shin sekai yori towards the end.
- Mirai Nikki was horrifying sometimes
- Gantz - sci-fi/gore/horror

I agree but thank God for threads like these so we can exchange titles so we can find some of those hidden gems. Thanks a lot.
