To answer the original thread title: "Why aren't there more horror/gory/intellectual animes?"

- Because anime producers will only consider what the audience within Japan wants, I doubt they care about what the audience outside of Japan wants.
The age demographic of anime viewers in Japan is pretty much from 10-17... the anime producers are going to cater for them first and foremost. That is why there are sooooo many romantic comedy, shoujo and shounen animes.
...

Not quite sure about the ages. The anime we are looking at airs after midnight and is primarily aimed at people who BUY anime in Japan at the high prices there. I don't know that 10 year olds are spending $300 on an anime series.

Secondly, shoujo doesn't sell well AT ALL these days. Instead of shoujo they are making otome game adaptations which are doing a bit better to much better especially UtaPri 2000% which is selling enormously well, at least the first volume.

Shounen like Attack on Titan can sell very well but even though shounen is or was originally aimed at 10-18 year old boys, the buyers may well be older, at least into twenty-something otakus.

Seinen sells horribly and most horror is more toward the seinen range. Not sure why but everything aimed up there sells very poorly for anime. Josei too, the more mature version of shoujo.

So talking about anime for viewers is very different. Anime for TV viewers is mostly stuff we don't see here at all. Children's stuff like Doki Doki Precure, Doraemon, Sazae San, Crayon Shin Chan do well. Then finally a few more mainstream shounen titles like Detective Conan, One Piece, Toriko, once in a while Space Brothers.

Horror/gore...Shigurui Death Frenzy, one of my favs
Horror/gore/intellectual....Kite (no, not the one on cr)
you might also consider Speed Grapher,Paranoia Agent. Basilisk , Deadman Wonderland, Perfect Blue and on a limb here..Gilgamesh, which is more horror/psychological than gore. I'm one of the rare people who actually liked it.

I'm with you on this..I wish there was more horror /gore anime, a good one WOULD have been Tenjo Tenge if it had been true to the manga. I still like the anime tho. and it does have a bit of gore.

Check out Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari here on CR for some intellectual anime. They are still some of my favorites. Bakemonogatari second season is starting to air on Daisuki now.

Don't forget to slip in Nekomonogatari: Kuro after Bakemonogatari.

Daisuki is adding it to their site.

Chronologically Nekomonogatari Kuro comes BEFORE Bakemonogatari. But it was aired AFTER Nisemonogatari. So take your pick: chronological order or aired order. I prefer the aired order as we can't actually watch in chronological order yet since they still (STILL!) haven't brought out the Kizumonogatari movie...

Daisuki has episode 1 of Neko Kuro up now, plus the first 5 of Bake and Nise... what a weird streaming site that is...

I know, but in terms of character development and world orientation it'd be weird to start with Neko. And I think it's a nice primer for Nisemonogatari too, the way it draws the sisters into the mix early on.

I should've clarified that though; ty!
