wait did you just put astro boy, pokemon, etc on a horror/gory/intellectual thread? thats pretty funny

Nah, that's just my anime list, that I haven't updated recently. It has lots of good stuff, but I'm too lazy to point them out so I just posted the whole thing. For example:

K-On! is an intellectual anime about girls rising up against their oppressive school rules to start a band in their music club. Did I mention they also sell themselves for money to pay for the equipment they have to purchase in order to achieve this dream? It really speaks to the human in all of us.

Check out Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari here on CR for some intellectual anime. They are still some of my favorites. Bakemonogatari second season is starting to air on Daisuki now.

Don't forget to slip in Nekomonogatari: Kuro after Bakemonogatari.

Daisuki is adding it to their site.

bake first then nise then Nekomonogatari: Kuro?

I have seen most of those... looking for more of a gory kind of anime. And if you want harsh realities i still love the feature grave of fireflies.

You could always expand into manga for horror. I know there are threads already for horror anime.

Chronologically it's Kizumonogatari, Nekomonogatari, Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari, and Monogatari 2nd Season.

You should start with Bake (the Kizu movie isn't out yet). Neko is a 4-part OVA that you can watch any time after you finish Bake (it's a stand-alone prequel, but it works best after you've seen Bake). And then Nise and S2 (airing now).

But yeah, whatever you do Bakemonogatari is where you should start.

PS: Daisuki only has the first part of the Nekomonogatari OVA up so far; they'll probably be adding one a week. If you want to stick to legal streams you can put it off indefinitely without hurting anything and watch Nise and start S2.

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is similar to Bakemonogatari in the intellectual department.

Both are good in their own rights. As for harsh realities and 'gory' some on that list are Gunslinger Girl, Gantz, Shigurui, Shiki, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Texhnolyze etc.

Intellectual there are Time of Eve, Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, Kino's Journey, Flag, and Gasaraki.

Well really, it all depends on what you're looking for. Just out of curiosity, out of that whole list - how many have you seen all the way through?

They don't sell well in japan period. The only expectation to this is higurashi but it had both moe elements along with gore a decent story and characters you actually cared about. This is hard as hell to pull off so don't look forward to many type of these series.

You can argue that astro boy and Pokemon are intellectual.

edit: it took 4 pages before someone else wrote something about moe >.>

I don't want to live on this planet anymore~ and so... God abandons Sunday

The first two episodes of Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse are very good for horror/gore. After that it turns into an entirely different show, a comedic/drama harem mecha.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is an awesome vampire horror movie. It's classic anime. This is also one of the few animes that I recommend the english dub over english subtitles,

Denpa teki na Kanojo.

I really wished they did the 3rd story, chapter 2 I believe, along with more original stories. Could've been an awesome series instead of just 2 ovas! Shame cos it was an in depth story, dark themes and despite being anime with a few stereotypes, it felt very realistic & was well thought out.

Death note was the 1st true intelectual anime. It had you trying to piece the mystery together as it unfolded before your eyes.

I'd love more anime that keeps you guessing/thinking, simply cos it questions our own actions as well as the characters!

I skimmed through a bit, but I don't think this one was mentioned..

It's only 3 episodes, but I remember Strait Jacket being fairly gory.
