It's only 3 episodes, but I remember Strait Jacket being fairly gory.

Denpa teki na Kanojo.

I really wished they did the 3rd story, chapter 2 I believe, along with more original stories. Could've been an awesome series instead of just 2 ovas! Shame cos it was an in depth story, dark themes and despite being anime with a few stereotypes, it felt very realistic & was well thought out.

Death note was the 1st true intelectual anime. It had you trying to piece the mystery together as it unfolded before your eyes.

I'd love more anime that keeps you guessing/thinking, simply cos it questions our own actions as well as the characters!

I wouldn't call Death Note the first true intellectual anime, but that's just me. Also, wouldn't it be the second story of Denpa, considering it's before the second ova which is based on chapter 3? You know, being the second chapter and all.

Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, Kino's Journey, Monster, Ghost in the Shell, Now and Then, Here and There, yada yada. Those all came before Death Note and there are tons more examples, I just don't know them all and can't think of anymore at the moment.

The most intellectual anime is K-On! though without a doubt. You'd have to rewatch it to grasp what you just experienced. It's that brain empowering.

v Not to mention all the smexy action that goes on.

I just remembered an anime that I watched a long time ago.

Mononoke... (not Princess Mononoke, just Mononoke).

It's not your typical horror story, but I felt creeped out while I was watching it. It has a really good storytelling technique.

Because all the genre's you listed are a niche genre and are either a risk assessment or expected to generate poor profit for anime companies. Why not just create the next cute girls doing cute things anime that sells really well then take a risk like that from there standpoint.

Also depending how intense the horror is, the psychodrama is, or even the intellectualism of it... They either can't turn it into a telecast anime meaning they have to rely strictly on DVD/BD sales (may require a lot of marketing) or they have to subject the series to a few OVA's at the author of the series discretion. This basically means that an author can reject an anime companies offer of a few OVAs or an offer they feel is inadequate. The series won't see a anime release for this reason either.

Japan is more morally driven than the USA is and isn't as open in terms of these genres either. Even the guy who created evangelion got massive death threats and writing on his home's walls (he went temporarily insane because of it). Either way these genres suffer from a lot of setbacks in japan.

Anno Hideaki (The director/creator of Evangelion) also included some of the death threats in the End of Evangelion movie. It could have also been in the final two episodes as well but I'm not sure on that. I wouldn't say he went temporarily insane, he was in a deep depression after all. Rather, he got over it and now we have the Rebuild of Evangelion...

Btooom! I just finished watching it and it was really good. Another great series, if your looking for more of a romance plot with a horror style is Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. And Shiki, cause that one is just creepy, but in a good way.

King of Thorns was an anime movie... All I know that Kana Hanazawa is in it...
I never watched it yet... So if you watch it, tell me how it is... It's licensed by Funi so I think there may be blurays/dvds out...
