I do not think you need to know a lot about them to appreciate the story but from what I have gathered over the years tanuki are raccoon dogs ( a real animal) that in Japanese folklore are shapeshifters and typically tricksters (like a monkey in other cultures).

I have always found it interesting that tengu seem to be depicted in a variety of ways in different shows. In other shows I have seen them depicted as humanoid crows (Nura:Rise of the Yokai Clan) and other times like here where they seem a little more human with longer noses and a red face/mask (Red Data Girl seemed to have had some of those). I am not sure what is considered the more accurate depiction. Does anyone know what role they play in Japanese folklore or if there is a particularly famous folktale they play a role in?

Hopefully this is was at least a little helpful and if anyone has better/more information or I was wrong about something please let me know.

As far as I'm aware, both depictions of tengu are accurate. Ko-tengu or Karasu-tengu are more crow-like, while the Dai-tengu or Hanadaka-tengu are more humanoid with the long noses and particular clothing style.

What a sad episode. I guess this episode is just filling the back story for the family. Basically this is the setup that we'd normally expect in episode 1.

Yes, for a 13 episode series it is moving slowly. I am worried already that like RDG it may not move fast enough but I haven't read that novel so I don't know where it is compared to the source material.

Episode 2

Meh episode for me, at least the first half. Second half's setting reminds me a little of Atlantis or rather an aquatic field. Oh and we're not in Kansas anymore~

Also, this is kinda cute:

I cannot give this series as many stars as it deserves and it makes me a little sad. First half of the show was a bit meh, but over-all it was beautifully done, imaginative and a tinge-romantic. <3

Any episode with Benten is a good episode, she's just so slinky and sexy, and I love her VA. <3

That's pretty much it for me too. I really like the key characters, and that's definitely part of it. And the parts that are cute (like little brother tanuki) aren't sickeningly so.

Same boat, there is just something pleasant and enjoyable about watching these characters interact with one another and dealing with their problems in tanuki society haha

I just finished watching episode 3. This show is amazing, and I love that it was based off a book so no one is spoiling it in the comments. At first I thought the world was small, then the more a watched it became vast.

It reminds me somewhat of Natsume Yuujinchou.. well the setting does at least.

Now I'm even more curious as to what Kaisei looks like (the girl under the bridge that saved the mother) now that I know Yasaburo was planned to be engaged to her. I didn't quiet get what the argument was that made the mother so made at their uncle.

Well Yasaburo said that her dad broke off the engagement. I guess he also said something relating to the death of Yasaburo's father, like that is why the engagement is now off, or that now Yasaburo is unworthy of his daughter or some crap like that. He probably did not wait long after the death of Yasaburo's father to tell all of this to his still grieving wife.

This is one I am really enjoying. I like the slice-of-(bizarre)-life storytelling, the background art is scrumptious, the character designs fresh and interesting, and Benten is just absolutely fricken' amazing! She is such a temptress! I have no clue where the story is heading, but I don't care! I just want to see more and more.
