For me I grew up with it on old time toonami back when it was an afternoon thing on Cartoon Network, at that time (at least from what I can remember) nothing stood up to how awesome it was to a younger me. Now whenever I see it it's nostalgic so it becomes a legend to me.

Nowhere has Toriyama ever said that series was meant to be a satire. Having a sense of humor is not the same as parody. Also, none of the series humor even comes fromShonen tropes to begin with. Just because you can't take something seriously doesn't mean others can't. There isn't even any tone difference between the English and Japanese versions at all. Anything that was shown seriously in English was also that way in Japanese.

It was popular in Japan because the entire show was a joke on the Shoenen genre. The Saiyans were all vegetables, Nameks were musical instruments, women were named after body parts, a wrestler named Mr. Satan complete with a chanting mob screaming SATAN SATAN..and the main character Goku spoke like a little girl. For those of us who imported it bootleg with the original Japanese we found the whole damn thing funny as hell because it had fight scenes that lasted for 14 episodes only for them to declare they were going to fight with their true power. It was meant as a JOKE because of how long these shoenen episodes really are. I never understood how when they changed to the English they made it look like it was actually "real".. killed the fun for me. It's hilarious in Japanese.

Yeah, it wasn't meant to be a comedy 100% of the time. I believe I saw a survey that described the english version of DBZ as being the most watched to this day even by Japanese.

The show is quite a thrill under the english setting. It made the show a great deal more "epic", especially because of the composer. When they converted the show to english Bruce Falconer composed every single bit of background music for the entire show...and it contributed to a far and wide higher action appeal...as the original arrangements behind the show in the Japanese version are quite boring. Trumpet band type nonsense. This is not even to mention that the english VA's were astoundingly good (not many would argue that the english Goku has probably more widespread appeal over the original).

Wrong, there was never any survey over which version was more prefered. In fact the English version never aired in Japan to begin with. Also, Bruce Falconer's music only shows up in the US version which never aired outside of America, and most countries use the Japanese southtrack. As a matter of fact Goku's English VA himself considers the original VA better.

To claim the series was meant for parody is like saying Evangelion was just a tax scam.

DBZ was popular because it was novel as hell + it was like a cartoon version of the most awesome hollywood action movie you could ever see.

I used to love it as a kid, now not so much. It's really repetitive. Essentially Toriyama was the first person to get in on a popular genre.

Although I have noticed as with anything fast food sells better than steak. If you want your series to be popular, you have to try to get it to be accessible to the largest number of people.

Fairy Tail kind of fails at that because of its boobs. It has too much fanservice. I may like fanservice, but most people are offended by it, feminism and all that.

Anyway step one, pretty visuals and action scenes, step two an easily understood storyline, step 3(optional) romance.

For example : AoT : Step 1) Clear , Step 2) Humanity on the verge of extintion by Giant zombies, simple. Clear Step 3) Hints of romance.

SAO : Step 1 ) Clear. Step 2) Trapped in MMORPG fighting to get out. Simple. Clear. Step 3) Heavy Romance.

There are popular animes that will have anime fans (Clannad, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.) But then there are popular animes that will have all kinds of fans. (One Piece, Naruto, DBZ, SAO) One Piece is like the biggest thing in Japan even though Americans may not like it all that much.

That really surprises me. Despite me enjoying it fanservice and all. I really can't defend it against a lot of the complaints I hear about it. I would have thought it was a niche anime. I genuinely think that Naruto is a deeper show than Fairy Tail despite the fact that on average I enjoy Fairy Tail more. Naruto definitely has more significant emotional moments for example, just it has so many awful episodes in between.

American view:

It was during the 90s, anime on TV on a kids network was still relatively new, the thirst was real.

animes like naruto, one piece, attack on titan, fairy tail, etc... are the ones most people complain about, as long as I enjoy the anime i wont care, here is an example: One Piece, i know that One Piece is by miles better than Naruto and Fairy Tail when it comes to storyline, but the anime is the one i enjoy the least, Toei destroys every manga it animates (Toriko), its pacing and animation are wrong to a whole new level, 4Kids dub destroyed One Piece's popularity in America, so i guess thats why the other animes are more popular.

as for me, at least imo, i enjoy Fairy Tail and Naruto much more

and back to the topic, DBZ was just popular in the West (America and Latin American countries (i guess)), and i won't lie, i really enjoyed the anime back when i was a kid, YuYu Hakusho overwhelmed Dragon Ball in Japan when it comes to sales and streaming.

but from a neutral point of view, dragon ball offers nothing but a good main character and great fighting scenes, storywise, back stories and secondary characters it probably sucks

and back then ANIME was not that censored or cancelled, example: Toonami..... nowadays we have almost nothing or adult swim (it only streams anime once a day)
