A few weeks back I was at my parents’ house for a BBQ when my brother showed me his new anime box set he just got in the mail (it was Betterman).

While my brother and I were talking about the anime my dad overheard us as said this.

“You remember that one anime that you guys use to watch when you were kids with that one guy that died then came back and he had to fight ghost and witches …and oh yeah the grim reaper was a girl? Can’t remember the name but damn that theme song was so good. That drummer got down.” (My dad is a drummer so anytime he hears good drumming he will praise it no matter where it comes from)

Anyway the anime he was talking about was YuYu Hakusho but the whole scene was too funny.

So how would your parents describe an anime show?

Just for fun put your answers in spoiler’s tags to see if we get it right.

They call them "movies" - they're open to watching them and all - even said I can plan a trip to a convention sometime in the future.

Always something about the big eyes. (You have to admit, they are pretty disproportionate).

My dad always says that it sounds like the characters are always whining (Japanese)
I can understand him, a lot of the girl voices at least does sound whiny. And it definitly sounds like whining when the girl and some guy characters cry. Most VAs overact som damn much when they're doing crying.

He has never actually watched any anime.

"It sounds like Norwegian." - My father's reaction to a Ghibli movie.

I wouldn't be surprised if my mom would watch anime sometimes. She's just that kind of person!

Now that I think about it the drumming in the YuYu Hakusho opening was cool. The whole opening was anyway.

My parents would probably describe them as cartoons although I think they have watched anime before when they actually visited Japan years ago. As for really describing, I'm not so sure how they feel about anime in general since they don't watch much of it.

Can't ask my dad because of... Stuff. Mom says how I understand japanese but I say subs work wonders, she wouldn't watch it since she's into dramas.

don't know what my dad might think.... he was always very stubbornly against anything I liked, he would most likely dismiss it as children's shows. That said I know a few he would really have enjoyed, things like Guin Saga and Princess Mononoke

My mom on the other hand quite enjoys a lot of them. She visits on the Weekends to watch shows like Chihaya and Rozen Maiden. She is actually a pretty big fan of Attack on Titan.

Managed to get her started on Ghibli films and slowly moved her into TV shows thanks to Secret of Cerulean Sand and Nadia.
