speak my mind because it may do justice in turning heads towards my ideas. if you never speak up, you'll never be recognized.

I usually speak my mind unless what I say may seem "messed up".
I'm tired of being judged.

Just think about this scene where you're in kindergarten. The teacher asked "what is 2 + 2?"
You know the answer is "4" but the one sitting next to you says it's "5."
You know you're right and the other is wrong but he voiced it out loudly and repeatedly, "5, 5, 5!!!"
Since the whole class sees this guy is very confident stating his answer, they join in and loudly repeat "5, 5, 5!!!"
They keep doing it till it forces you to think that maybe "I was wrong. I should change my answer to 5 too."
To avoid the discomfort, you join the bandwagon and say "5" like a mindless drone. Give in to the peer pressure.

When people are confronted with information that is contrary to their expectations, it creates a sense of cognitive dissonance, that is a feeling of unease with your environment. In order to make peace with that environment they shift their beliefs so that it aligns with the external information that is given.

Your opinion might not be popular, but you thought about it. And since you thought about it, that means you're a human.
And since you're a human and there's a billion people living in this world, you should probably think that someone already had thought about what you were thinking. At the end, don't feel weird and just say what you have to say. You might be the 3% but you surely thought about it.

I have this impulse to say whatever somebody doesn't want to hear just to upset people I don't like...It never helps anything, so I have to bite my cheek to control myself and plan my words. I don't agree with most popular opinions anyway as most people never give a second thought to them. Sometimes I will sugar coat my thoughts to make them more agreeable. I don't want people to only think of me as an argumentative bitch...

That was a pretty good analogy!

I try to be diplomatic about how I express my opinions. If it's a positive opinion that isn't likely to get flak, no problem. If it's a controversial opinion that might get some glares, I'm careful about how I word myself, and try to express myself clearly without adding any emotional charge that could rile someone up just because of how I said it. In the company of friends, though, I prefer not to debate opinions, since in my experience people have a hard time keeping their cool, and it's not worth walking down a road that would burn bridges when a lot of times people are deadset in their point of view anyways (agree to disagree is how I'd usually want to approach those situations). So I usually express my opinions truthfully, sometimes with more tact when it's called for, but I don't try to sugarcoat them, though sometimes I won't express them if I know it'll start a battle that isn't worth fighting (and vice versa).
