I have run into this problem multiple times as of late where the video I am streaming stops for 3-5 seconds every 1-2 seconds. I will pause it, wait a minute, hit play and 20 seconds later the problem will resume again. I know it is not my internet as I have run multiple speed tests and I get 15-16 MB/s every time I run the test. I have also tried switching browsers, I went from Chrome to Firefox. The problem continues to persist and the issue I have is I am paying for this service and I really enjoy the anime that are available, however this is becoming infuriating. If there is a known solution out there I could not find it searching through the forums. Thanks for any help.

  1. No, it isn't your internet.
  2. This is a more of a buffering problem, not really a stuttering problem.
  3. It is best to just refresh the entire video page, and start off again where it last left off. Rather than wait for the buffering

I was smooth sailing for a long time here on Crunchyroll, then about a week ago or so I started getting alot of stuttering. It would stutter less and less as I downgraded the stream. Even at SD it was doing it. I have comcast, and so I watch things on demand through their site as well, but it had been a while. Then i discovered it was doing it there as well, long story short i found my problem to be the proxy setting in firefox that was choking the streams for some reason.
Advanced>Network>Connection Settings> and select no proxy.
Not sure if it will work for everyone but worked like magic for me.

Having the same problem, no proxy settings in my connection settings (was set to auto detect) and it stutters. Is there a way we can increase the caching on the CR player? That would be ideal, as this happens in ALL BROWSERS. My connection speed is quite good as I sent to CR support last time i tried streaming from my PC. I used to never have issues, but about 3 or 4 months ago they started up, so now I either have to watch from my tablet or my roku and it works well, but sometimes i just want to watch from my computer room, and I cant.

I've also included an upload of my speed test result so you can see that it really is quite good for my area.

Also here is a ping test:

I just wanted to add another possible solution to this, since I talked to a friend who was having issues but the proxy did nothing. Apparently his cable modem was hung up on some kind of update that would never finalize. All he had to do was unplug the modem and leave it off a good 60 seconds, then give the modem time to get all lights up, then plug it into the router. This cleared up his buffering problem right away.

Good luck to those of you still having problems with this, if i hear anything else I will edit this post again.

Same problem here. I have to turn it down to 480P before it quits stuttering. I have a consistent 15Mb down (3 up) and am running on a pretty nice set up (3770k 3.5 Ghz, 16Gb RAM, SSD, etc), so there is no reason for buffering issues on my end. Youtube, netflix, and every other video site I use runs fine in the highest setting.

It runs fine on the iPad as well, so I can only assume it is a problem with their implementation on the desktop.

Wish these workaround worked for me, since 480P is lame.

Given that so many people have been having this problem, it would make sense for CR to create some kind of streaming test, so you can see what kind of speeds you can actually stream from them. They should also allow you to buffer the entire episode, and not just seconds at a time.

Are they using a Cloud Driver to Host all these Animes?

I find it strange my Mobile and TV play them all perfectly but when it comes to the PC they freeze up or never work at all.

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. It's obvious from the number of people complaining about it that this problem is on Crunchyroll's end. Right now I'm writing this while waiting for a 480p video to buffer what precious few minutes Crunchyroll will actually allow it to buffer for the umpteenth time now. I wish they would hurry up and fix it.

It is good to know I am not alone in this predicament. The suggestions posted here (thank you, all) have helped alleviate the problem, but it is still perplexing and frustrating for a paying customer since everything was fine this morning. Other sites, including those for streaming video, work fine for me, so I doubt it is a connectivity issue on my end.

Like any streaming service that hopes to work over a broad geographic area, CR uses a Content Delivery Network.

One difference is the degree of redundancy. Netflix has as many as three different CDN's, and Hulu apparently two, while up until recently, CR only had one for any specific stream type (specifically, one CDN for devices and another CDN for Flash streams for the browser).

I recall seeing a mention from one of the CR staff that they were bringing a second CDN on for redundancy, but it was actually causing some issues in the interim.

AFAIK, both TAN and Funimation only use a single CDN for their subscriber content (and for free view content in Canada) while both use Hulu for free view videos in the United States. TAN uses Amazon for subscriber videos, but I can't recall what CDN Funimation uses.

Going off on a tangent, while trying to find out what CDN Funimation uses, I found this page, apparently from the company that designed their current website. I think it explains a lot about why it doesn't work that well:

I'm getting the stuttering too.

I've got a solid 10Mbps connection. Was able to stream CR 1080p no problem until recently.
Have attempted to reset router, clear all other connections while streaming, using multiple browsers.. no dice.
Youtube etc works fine at 1080p. I conclude it's something to do with CR themselves.

Guess I'll just watch them in SD...

I believe it was Cloudflare (hitting a Varnish cache server, rather than the core web server), but that could have changed while they're performing their current upgrade process. But that was for web pages, and I don't know if they use a different service for video content.
