I've only been noticing this video stutter while on the PS3 CR App and it does this on the start of almost all episodes I watch and is getting far worse over time.

Sometimes its alright others not.If it gets too bad I go to fan -sub thats all! They have an updated player great picture controls and watch hours on end with no problems. To be honest I thought the customer always comes first but you tend to get scolded around here.At least they pay attention a little!Look at the Funi mess.Just watching Sunday Without God and it just stopped with like 2mins to go I finally got it to play but passed a minute of video!

I refuse to use fansubs as they are illegal, I'm not saying I never used them just when I started to subscribe to CR I stopped using them entirely but these issues I've been reading about that are not getting solved and causing people to cancel their subscription is really pathetic.

Most issues appear to go unsolved and CR really needs to get their act together if they don't want to go bankrupt anytime soon.

Also CR's video quality will always beat fansubs.

Having a lot of trouble as well. Is there any ongoing site work that's interfering?

I have no issue with CR video quality . But the fan-sub I use has great quality and just added HD! I down to 480 on CR now and ready to try SD if problems persist. It just too bad.

I have also been having problems with CR stuttering while no other site is having a problem. I have done everything from testing my internet connection, testing my ping to the servers CR suggest, tracing to the server CR suggest, and even checking my upload and download speeds while streaming on CR(this was showing weaker upload and download than I thought it should, but it was still there). I found that my firefox was also set with proxy settings so I turned those off. I tried playing a video and it didn't stutter as much this time around though it was still doing it, I would say it was 5 times really quickly in a normal episode compared to 20+ and completely freezing in the same episode. I used 480p both before and after and to make all things fair it was the same video. Now it is also 2am where I am at (EST) so that may have something to do with it. There was about an hour between videos while I was trying to find a solution to all my stuttering problems.

I'm now experiencing this problem too. It has nothing to do with the "Proxy" setting in FireFox 24. In fact it also happened in Chrome 18.xxx and IE 10. CR is having problems.

I don't want to pay for this kind of service either. I'm hanging in there for a while longer to see if they pay attention to customer complaints.

In the meantime, do CR tech support people ever respond to this forum, or is it strictly user-to-user?

UPDATE: I've been attempting to watch episodes of AKB0048 in 1080p resolution. There have been numerous problems with the stuttering playback reported by other users and myself in this forum.

I had been resolving the problem in the short term by restarting any episode that started to exhibit playback problems. That approach worked with decreasing success until I got to episode 10. Now I can't get a single playback without having to deal with the erractic dropouts no matter how often I try to restart the episode.

This is ridiculous. CR owes its paying customers to issue some kind of statement to the effect that they're at least trying to fix this problem, however unsuccessfully thus far.

In lieu of any attention they don't pay to this forum, I'm letting them know via their account support email that I'm ready to cancel my subscription unless they can demonstrate some kind of progress, or at least some kind ot intent, in fixing this nonsense.

I believe it was Cloudflare (hitting a Varnish cache server, rather than the core web server), but that could have changed while they're performing their current upgrade process. But that was for web pages, and I don't know if they use a different service for video content.

Hey EyeOfPain,

Nice to hear from you again. Thanks for all the info about CDN services. It appears as though CR has run into problems with their current provider, just as ANO and TAN VOD did when they changed providers about a year ago.

If only there was some small amount of consistency in quality with any of these streaming services.

Anyway, hope things are going well with you. Your recommendation for Nichijou was a good one. I really like that series.

Hello Everyone

After emailing support about this issue I rec'd this PM:

So!
If you've gone through the cache clearing, trying alternate DNS as outlined in the Help topics and what we do with troubleshooting via email, this is where we get:

Thank you for your follow up and providing the requested details for us to research your connectivity issues further.

Sincere apologies for the issues you are encountering, and thank you for your patience as we have worked to troubleshoot them.

At this point there are unfortunately no further steps that we can take to resolve your issue at this time. I will pass your information and test results onto our Operations Team.

However, we would like to let you know that issues you are encountering have been known, and we are actively working on multiple solutions to provide you a better streaming experience in the future. We are currently working to enhance our Flash Player, so as to remedy the playback problems described.

We are also adding additional CDNs to help provide more robust serving, and a physically closer servers to your PC for when you do stream our content.

Our Operations Team is hard at work to bring you these enhancements in the near future, and we again appreciate your patience as we work on improving your connectivity experience. In the meantime, if you have a mobile, console, or set top box device you may experience better connectivity when watching our content through a Crunchyroll app.

Thank you for supporting Crunchyroll, as well as the Anime Industry. Please let me know if there is anything at all I can further assist with.

It is an issue we're aware of and working to fix.

Regards,
-Baker

RE the comment about alternate DNS servers: if you haven't tried it already, you might want to change the IP addresses of your DNS servers to Google's Free Public DNS servers. It's a good way to rule out your ISPs DNS servers as part of the problem.

How you get there depends on your version of Windows.

In Windows 7 you have to go into the TCP/IP settings for your active internet connection. Right-click on the connection icon in your System Tray, click on Open Network and Sharing Center, click on your connection name after the "Connect:ions:" label, click on Properties, click on TCP/IPv4, Click on Properties, select "Use the Following DNS Server Addresses" , enter these primary and secondary DNS addresses:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Click on OK, OK, Close, Then close the Network and Sharing Center.

NOTE 1: You can also get to the Network and Sharing Center via the Control Panel.

NOTE 2: this advice is given as-is, assumes no risk on my part. That's just the usual caveat. If you have problems with the Google DNS servers, you can always go back into the TCP/IPv4 properties menu and selected "Obtain DNS addresses automatically". That should get you back to your ISPs DNS servers.

Happy Viewing,
Alan Mintaka

UPDATE: switching to Google's Public DNS servers didn't work for me. Playback of 1080p videos still stutters in both video and audio on a random, frequent basis. It doesn't matter what series I'm watching.

I'll give Crunchyroll a week to resolve this - that's 7 days from today, to 11/11/2013. If they can't I'm gone, and will require a two week pro-rated refund to compensate for the week ending today and the next 7 days, during which the streaming service has been unusable.

The DNS change didn't work for me either.

I'm seeing a lot of people both here and on other sites having problems with CR. So I'm pretty sure it's on their end.

Hi CanuckianOne,

No doubt about it being on their end, as acknowledged by Baker in that PM: "It is an issue we're aware of and working to fix."

BTW many of my ancestors are from Quebec.

Hello Everyone,

My apologies to Baker for posting PM messages on the forum - but I think this is information that the people experiencing this problem need to know.

This is an excerpt from the response to my latest PM to CR support, letting them know that I would cancel on 11/11 if they didn't fix this problem:

Unfortunately this is not something that will be fixed in a week, due to the steps we are taking to work on the issue.
We're hoping to have the new streaming style as well as Smart CDN Selection implemented by the end of Q1 2014.

So that's the bottom line. CR is working on it, but the status is that they're "hoping" to fix it by the end of Q1 2014..

Baker has terminated my subscription's auto-renewal effective 11/12, for which I am grateful. Obviously I'll be offline here until CR can correct the situation.

Thanks once again to Baker for helping, and happy holidays to all!
Alan Mintaka
