I didn't have cable when I was younger, so no Toonami, but I did watch Pokemon, Digimon, and 4Kids dub of Cardcaptor Sakura. It wasn't until 7-8th grade that I learned what anime was.

I would like to know your guys thoughts on Toonami affecting the popularity of Anime in the Untied States. As a kid I watched pokemon and digimon, but didn't really get into Anime until one fateful night when I turned the channel to 31 (Adult Swim) and watched Ghost in the Shell Standalone complex; I was totally entranced.

It seems like anime in The Untied States didn't have a major outlet until the creation of Toonami; which was broadcasted on a channel that was on basic cable and since it was on basic cable millions of Americas then had access to watching anime.

The funny thing about this, is that toonami has yet to consider itself a anime broadcasting station, It still thinks it is broadcasting a variety of types of shows on it's network. But, almost all of the fans and viewers of it's station consider it a 'anime station' everytime, including me. But, if Do not believe me then just Read this question which was submitted by me on their tumblr account:

That's right. Williams Street, Jason DeMarco and others consider the toonami block as an action and adventure cartoon block. That's why they show (animes) Japanese cartoons such as Naruto, Bleach, One Piece etc which are action packed. I further read that it has to do with sponsoring and of course the budget. Dubbing and purchase rights have a lot to do with what anime is going to be put on toonami. However, due to toonami's growing popularity we should see more great shows upcoming. They were very fortunate to get IGPX, which was toonami's first original show. (which is currently on) All in all, I still think of the block as anime and so do many others and Williams street knows this.

I just wrote the above a few hours ago and just saw my first advertisement for toonami's lineup next week and its official that Star Wars the clone wars will be on in the 3 am slot. Now that is not an anime people. So that just gave substance to 1mirg's link. I cant wait to see the ratings.

I think Toonami is awesome. It's one of the only way to actually watch anime on tv in the US. Now it didn't get me into anime but I do stay up every Saturday to see Sword Art Online and Soul Eater even though I've already seen both.

Once Toonami came it was like cake and pie together!! there were a few that i didnt care for, but when Bleach (the best fighting anime ever,.. sry DBZers) came on,. i was like,. ok,. this is what a junkie feels like. but to answer the question,. Toonami is the reason why America has gone gaga for anime (and shonen jump)

yea and it's only on saturday nights
the toonami guy went away for a while but i think they brought him back recently
toonami really got me into anime.
I actually didn't know what it was til years later cause i used to watch stuff on there when i was like 8 and 10 years old
then one day when i was about 14 i decided to re watch Inuyasha on the internet cause they didn't air the episodes one after another anymore and I found it was anime.
I also watched through deathnote and a couple other series without realizing it was anime til that fateful day i decided to try and re-watch Inuyasha.
I wish anime was a bigger thing in america and we had a station that aired it like 24/7 with simulcasts and what-not

Majority of old school people have to thank Toonami for today's success. Sadly, majority of people who say that watch anime only have knowledge of DBZ and pokemon. Hopefully Toonami can display other popular shonen that will attract a broader audience.

I grew up on old school Toonami but the Adult Swim version doesn't do anything the Internet doesn't do better.
