I don't think you can really call Shinji Ikari pathetic. Unlikable, sure, but not pathetic. After all, he does get the job done, whining or not.

I think pathetic is more like the main character from Welcome to the NHK, or Makoto from School Days (the anime, not the visual novel). At least 90% of their problems in those series were entirely self-inflicted, mostly due to lack of restraint or moderation. Admittedly, the outcomes for those characters were very different, but still, to me, those characters suffer from horrible situations in life which they either make no effort to improve, or, in some cases, actively make worse (usually while knowing full well they are making things worse).

Honorable mention goes to Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya, though that's mainly for stuff that happens in the novels, when

There is pathetic, and then there is PATHETIC. And Haruyuki from Accel World was P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C.

Kodaka from Haganai comes close, I mean you can't just say you didn't hear someone after they friggin clearly tell you something to your face. I wanted to knock him upside the head.

Yukiteru Amno from Mirai Nikki, there's no debating it. His whining and crying throughout the series made my ears bleed and I actually wanted to punch him through my television screen. I ALMOST completely dropped the series after the first few episodes because of him.

He was useless and shouldn't have survived, Yuno or not. He should have been the first one dead. I hate him so much. What fighting did he actually do, anyway...?

Umm, from the top of my head, probably Shinn Asuka from Gundam Seed Destiny whom often lets his personal feelings color his judgement and some of this decisions are so irrational that I just had to face palm.

Did you finish the show? lol

I don't disagree with you about how pathetic he was, but he kind of did fight. And he kind of sorta developed into a facade that was a complete 180.

Tsuna Sawada from "Reborn!". He didn't really work for me as far as leading characters are concerned. I didn't care much for how he had to be shot with some mind altering bullet in order to gain enough courage to fight. He did improve a little throughout the series, but he just didn't have that confident, leader attitude that I generally look for in main characters.

The main character 'Heroine' on Amnesia. Her name is never made known so she's just called 'Heroine' and she is a very stupid and dull one at that. I mean I know that she's lost her memories but my goodness by the end of the anime I was just laughing at her stupidity rather than enjoying the show.

Yukiteru Amano from Future Diary. Say what you want about Shinji Ikari, at least there's a reason for why he can be whiny and pathetic, what's Yukki's reason. None.

Characters i agree on: Amnesia female lead, Inoue (during the hollow homeworld arc).

Top of my head, Mahiro-kun, however i guess some situations occur due to his personality. Still to me, he makes me not watch the show. Despite that, Haiyore! Nyarko-san is rated among my favorite shows. That's how good it is, that i don't even watch it...

The student who creates F.r.e.i.j.a in Code Geass

Kouichi from Linebarrels. First two episodes he's EPIC, i thoght i was in for a treat. First i imagined he would use his machine, the strongest machine there is apparently, to take over the world with his awesomely insane personality. Then i thought he would take revenge on his own bullies first, then go on to take revenge on other bullies and save people. Instead he ends up bullying the bullies and lose alot of fights, get captured and join a team of pilots. Then you think, okay that seems more natural than him taking over the world all by himself. And you think he'll get some training courses by the team so he actually learns how to control his power. But NAH they just send him out on the field like he is. And how he fights you ask? For eight episodes or more i watched him swing around a sword on random, while his enemies used a bunch of epic techniques to own him up. DRAWING RANDOM SWORD SWINING IS A WASTE OF ANIME DRAWING, isn't it? And yeah, i made a typo there but it's true, he's both WHINING and SWINGING his sword at the same time. It's like making a statue of the worst swordsman ever, just for the heck of it, and putting it on town for everyone to view. You don't want that, you want a Samurai or a Knight etc. to stand proudly with a cool pose. Also, you don't want a guy who rejects every girl that talks to him like Kouichi does. He's supposed to be in love i think but he's like evil anyway. Not evil as in destroying public buildings, but evil as in rejecting the girls... He does the previous too. Well anyway, his character progression is pathetic.
I should write a review. XD I'd rate it highly due to the first two episodes though. :)

Ah and i'll throw in the female lead from "Say you love me"... No wait it was Say "i love you". HOWEVER she's not pathetic for the first first and a half episodes, she's brave and even calls for help. But then the male lead kind of make her into a wuzz. So he's pathetic AND mean. :p
I guess it's a bit like Kaichou wa maid-sama but with a truly pervert guy who's very non-gentle and a girl who's pretty personality less, except for her policy to roundhouse kick people who touch her. Well that happens once, but it's epic. ...Sorry but this is the first anime i fully REJECTED but no offense if you like it, it had potential until the second episode lol...

The main male character in Accel World. Can't remember his name. He was such a pathetic whiney sad sack I couldn't watch more than 2 episodes. Sorry, I just can't get behind a character like that. Ugh.

Makoto Itou from School Days or Taito Kurogane from A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives.

Two characters that kind of suck, but I still liked both of these anime.
