I think the hate from SAO stemmed from it's overhype.

When people said it was amazing, others felt obliged to not say that it was average (which is what I think it was) and instead say it was total shit.

I admit, I was one of those people who said SAO was total shit, but it was just fucking killing me when people were commenting on "top 10 anime" youtube videos saying "Umm, where is SAO" and "Seriously, SAO should be number 1."

SAO was great in some aspects, like the action and the concept of the story, but it fell short, for me, when it had a lack of character development and the story didn't really grab me by the time the first season ended. Also the fact that it totally switched universes and antagonists in the second season, really irked me as well.

I'm not angry at all at the fact the series didn't reach the expectations I set for it, I'm just disappointed that the concept was so great and the first 3 episodes were so amazing, but then it went into a type of harem show and the hero, Kirito, just turned out to be a typical hero, who could do no wrong. It made me lose interest and made me less inclined to start the second season. (I started watching SAO in April and just finished it this July)

Criticism will be found in anything you watch, but when it becomes complete hate, and jeering at people that really enjoyed the show and call shows like SAO or Naruto their favorite show then they have gone too far. I wouldn't like it if people kept hating on Fullmetal Alchemist (My favorite show) and not respect how I feel about it. I'm all for criticism, because it allows discussion and opens others minds to things they may not have thought about or seen when they watched it. But, if you do not respect the fandom, or someone's complete love for the show, then you need to shut up and just let them be.

As for SAO coming on Toonami, I am going to watch it, and enjoy the things that I found really good and enjoyable in the show and support the fact that a new anime, that just came out last year, is being aired on Toonami and give it the push it needs so Toonami can become like it once was back when I was a kid. If it gets as popular as Naruto and Bleach in the states, then that is fine with me.

People have their own personal preferences and opinions about the variety of topics available. Its malleable when it comes to criticism or appreciation on a person's view on that subject. Reviews about a certain subject should be given consideration about 30 percent of what he or she has to say about it . In other words give and take.

SAO is better than the average anime series but neither is it the best anime there ever is. People seem to like the anime is due to the fact that maybe the story-line has a sense of suttleness to it , starcross lovers rather than hardcore stuffs and so on. On the other hand people who dislike might be because of the story-line, hype and so on. In the end its like I have said its all down to an individual personal preferences and opinions, this is human nature

But lets not forget that everybody works hard to produce something to entertain us or help us, take this site for example. Funny enough this has also brought the whole concept of criticism and appreciation, therefore its only fair that we do not think highly of our own opinion (to reviewers out there) because it takes sweat and energy to create a piece of art. Doesn't matter if its a crappy song or a good book. As always be neutral about things in order to maintain peace within all of us, don't hate, embrace it .

There was this assumption made that there is an underground troll-nest.

That assumption is wrong. So very wrong.

I've watch SAO and couldn't really get into the series like I did with SnK. Maybe I'll give it another shot in the near future or whatever. I don't hate nor dislike the series which I found it to be overall meh to me. It gets annoying seeing people bash on it but the same happens to others shows too. We can be very blunt on a ton of things.

I think SAO is okay, i prefer .hack a lot more, but that is just my tastes, i do not watch very much anime mmorpg's, i have only read the manga of sao, but have not even touched the anime yet, besides seeing it on toonami once in a while.

I liked the first two episodes. After that, I lost interest. It seems good that I did considering the apparent "harem" or something similar that happens later.

The first two episodes set up for a great anime, sadly from episode 3 and on it disappointed. So you did well to stop after episode 2!

I see a lot of it as just venting for this very reason. A show built up so much, AND actually pulling it off for the first 3 or so episodes. Hell episode 3 almost had me in tears! ... And immediately were giving filler episodes and booooring plots with romance and some ai baby thingy.

I'd equate it to buying a fancy new vase that you just came across at a yard sale and all your neighbors compliment you on it right before you get home to find it smashed by your nosey 4 year old. You're gonna rant and yell for a while but you'll settle down and look back at the vase as something that wasn't so pretty anyway.

Well that's what I felt towards SAO at least.

I liked it a lot, even as I find myself being more critical of shows as I get older. I can very clearly understand the parts of the show that are a bone of contention for people. What I don't fully understand, though, is the vitriolic hate and utter polarization the show causes. I haven't seen a divide like this since Evangelion.

In the end, I think it's a matter of group dynamics that drives opinions about this show rather than the content itself. I first watched it with just my girlfriend. We both liked it a lot. (We both disagree on Eva, incidentally.) In the lead up to its appearance on [adult swim], however, other strong personalities in our group of anime friends strongly and vocally hated it. Before long, even friends that I know are tolerant of much worse anime and try to find the good in just about any show, were all synced up in their negative opinions of the show. I have little doubt that if everyone watched the show independently and rated it, they'd all come up with different ratings, mostly higher than what they'd rate it now. This, to me, was abnormal hatred.

I'm just as guilty of succumbing to the group fandom effect and its countereffect as well. Groups are powerfuI. I didn't care that much for the original FMA once it got to its second half (though I loved the first half). Everyone else around me continued to unabashedly adore it, which made it ever harder for me to watch the show objectively, and I'd definitely say it colored my opinion of my friends who I disagreed with. Incidentally, I got over that; one of my friends who annoyed me the most about it at the time is now my girlfriend of 5 and a half years and counting.

Regarding SAO, I'd say if you can't accept the basic premise of the show from the get-go, you shouldn't even watch it. I've seen people make up their minds about it before even seeing an episode. I kept my mouth shut and implored my friends who hadn't seen it to make up their own minds by watching it, but some of the others...they poisoned the well from the beginning. First impressions are extremely meaningful.

I'll admit that I've never seen any .Hack//Anything to compare against, and I have limited MMO experience, but I just liked the world and the urgency created by it. My MMO-loving girlfriend didn't have any real things to complain about with the way things were set up. I'm not watching most anime to see if they get a ton of real-world details right; probably the thing I love most about anime is its ability to explore concepts and world's you CAN'T explore in real life. I appreciated the attempt at portraying a beautiful virtual world with dark life-and-death consequences underlying it. The little side stories they worked in that people call the harem aspect of it are just the same sorts of one-off episodes you see in countless shows. I thought they all added a little more to the plot and world-revealing than most of those typical episodic stories you see at the beginning of countless anime.

When I reach the end of a show, I immediately go rate it on MAL. Usually, I'll have a pretty good idea generally where on a scale of 1-10 I think it sits and then I'll go back and add or knock off points based on more specific aspects of the show. That's what this show is. It's at the very least an average show that had a few flaws. It's not a 1 out of 10 show and it's not the greatest show ever. It's groupthink that's makes it hard to get an objective opinion of this show. I'll admit that I rated it high, and that is because I enjoyed certain aspects of it much more than I disliked other aspects of it. I've done that with other shows, too. I was more surprised than anyone how much I liked it, considering I expected from the name alone that it would be an average derivative work of some existing game or something.

My advice to anyone who has not seen the show is just to try hard to block out all the opinions you've ever heard on it and just watch it and make up your own mind. Try to remember that it's fantasy, and that it doesn't need to be compared to real life all the time. And, honestly, when you make up your mind on it, stick with your own personal interpretation, and let's everyone just shut up about this show. It seems to bring out the worst in the anime community, so, even as a fan of it, I think it'd be better if people just developed their own unique, private opinions and let the ridiculous flames die around this show.

1. Whoever made that picture needs to be shot dead.
2. Now, my opinion on the matter is simply: Haters gonna' hate. That's NEVER going to change but frankly, anybody who doesn't like SAO is just crazy. It's simply put, a legendary anime.

This is kind of a crazy question to me. You're asking why do people not like things? Because that's just people. I'll never understand how some people can hate Attack on Titan, but hey, what does it for one person doesn't do it for another. I think it's a bit immature to brand people as "A**holes" and "haters" because they don't like something that you do. People should be free to have their opinions without name calling being thrown about.

As for Sword Art Online, I hate it because of the middle of the show, which I did not make it past. It was just a ridiculous way to handle an anime. They rush through the all of the events in the game. Characters you just met, die before you can get to know them or care about them, and yet they handle it like it's the death of a major character. Fights and events are rushed through to the point of where they don't even make it to the top of the tower before they face and defeat the final boss and exit the game.

And all for what? For the sake of this chick being conveniently hospitalized in the hospital owned by her unrealistically villainous fiancee who seeks to separate the hero from the girl? All under the nose of her powerful father who somehow, doesn't realize this guy is a douchecicle? Come on... Why are we even talking about this? Why aren't they IN the game like they should be? Simply coming out and being alive ruins the whole point of "Death in the game means death in the world." Boom, there goes all the tension for when they go back into the next game. And I haven't watched to that point, because I dropped it, but who the hell would go back into another game?

Just...give me a break. Horrible execution.
