There was a change to make cached videos last longer. This could be part of that!

(Roku changes still being made.)

Thanks for the clarification Bjaker. Any update from the engineers on the new app's progress?

Could we potentially get an update on if the app has been resubmitted or not?

Been watching Crunchyroll in 1080p on an AppleTV while dog-sitting the last few days... WOW, I had no idea how good anime looked in full HD. I'm crossing my fingers for the Crunchyroll engineers to make this available on the Roku soon so I can enjoy the same HD awesomeness when I go back home in a couple of weeks.

My post from 7/23/13 - I have watched Chrunchyroll through my Roku box for nearly 2 years now. About 2 months ago the buffering time began to get longer and longer. Now frequently the videos stop dead for buffering for as much as 1 to 2 minutes before resuming. Also, videos frequently stop multiple times during play for buffering. Going back a few seconds to repeat a section of the video is a nightmare as well.

Could it be that Chrunchyroll's servers have reached their streaming capacity, are overloaded, and simply cannot keep up with the current number of subscribers online now? That is what the problem seems like.

=====================
Update this past week. This vacation week performance on Roku has been much, much worse than the problems we has last summer. This past week shows (example "Kyousougiga") are taking 2-3 minutes to load. They play for another minute or two, then buffer for another 2-3 minutes. This makes watching Crunchyroll anime on Roku all but impossible. During non-vacation times loading and buffering performance is acceptable. BTW, performance of the same videos on windows pc's on the same network this week has been fine - no performance problem. Also, this is a premium account.

I have to wonder if this will be a recurring problem every time there is a school vacation. It seems pretty clear that that Crunchyroll has a video streaming capacity problem of major proportions with their Roku streams.

If I remember correctly, I think ir's because the Roku app is one of the only ones (if not the only one) still using the older streaming method. So the CDN is less likely to have stuff cached close to you.

The new app is supplosed to the the HLS(?) method that the other platforms use, and therefore use the same CDNs and actually have access to a more up to date cache. And, hence, less buffering issues

Or, to put it another way...
The new app will fix it. Roku royally screwed over CR Roku users be deciding that an issue they found with an improved version of the app was worth not approving it, and leaving us stuck with an app that actually doesn't work.

The worst thing is that unless it's a "This Will Brick Your Device" kind of bug (and we don't know if it was or wasn't), it probably wouldn't matter at all t those of us who only have Roku boxes for Crunchyroll and don't mind the occasional glitch or power-cycle if it means they episode doesn't take about five minutes to buffer.

I gave up and bought an AppleTV. (Had 15% of the price covered by Christmas Gift Card)

Oh, look, I select and episode and it just plays.

Personally I wouldn't mind so much except I originally bought my Roku because of the lack of CR on an AppleTV. And then, two months later...

That's exactly my situation... I just haven't actually gone through with buying an AppleTV since I don't like Crunchyroll's UI on it. (Plus I'm cheap)

I got the Roku because I thought the CR app on the PS3 was more trouble than it was worth. Now the PS3 app actually works better than its supposed replacement. Just tonight I was going to marathon a few episodes that were on my queue, but things were taking too long so I opened up Funimation instead. I'd forgotten what it was like to select an anime and actually have it start playing almost immediately.

Wow, I'm actually leaning closer to buying the AppleTV since I've learned that you can customize your Netflix subtitles from within the AppleTV settings. You can change the color, size, font and background which is great since the standard Netflix subtitles are damn near impossible for me to read from across the room (yellow text with almost no borders). Plus, my wife and I have iphones so the Airplay thing is pretty neat too. Oh, and did I mention that AppleTV is on sale for $80 on Amazon right now?

Apparently, subtitle customization is coming to Roku as well but after waiting almost two years for 1080p on Crunchyroll's Roku channel, my patience is running low. Plus, the silence from Crunchyroll on the Roku app's developement is not encouraging.
