For a person like me who generally watches the more serious shows, it is a very bad thing. It adds nothing to the story and just takes you out of the mood. The first episode of High School of the Dead had me pumped, especially because of the ending. But after that, it just went to crap and is not worth even considering to watch again (for me at least). And call me an old man, but I don't understand how it is funny when a show has a guy "accidentally' fall into a girls crotch or breasts, nor do I understand appeal to have the screen randomly pan over to show under a girls skirt or focus on her chest while she is running. I guess Fan Service to me and what Code Geass is to Insomnist

I enjoy a bit a fanservice in anime, but I have seen some animes where the show or a particular set of episodes is all fanservice and I don't find that level enjoyable to watch.

Fanservice is like a spice. If the base dish isn't good, no amount of spice is going to make it better. Conversely, too much spice will ruin the best base dish. For anime, the base dish is story and character development.

I like fanservice... it's just that. Don't care if others don't like it because it's not for everyone.

I am on both sides sometimes I think "man this could have had a broader appeal if it weren't for all of the fanservice" Anime like Najica Blitz Tactics, High School of the Dead, Sekirei and Strike Witches fall into that category.

It also ruins any chances of the anime getting on American tv

It depends.

I either think fanservice is passable enough if it's light- you know, not too distracting- and maybe a bit silly (like Free! Iwatobi Swim Club) or if it's so over the top, it's hilarious (like High School of the Dead; I don't really like the fanservice there, but I can laugh at how ridiculous it is).

If it's fanservice just for the sake of dumb softcore porn and that's it, like what I've seen of Eiken Club, then I'll be skeezed out and won't like it even in a way where I can laugh at it.

When it's excessive then, yes it is. The occasional fanservice in anime is something that I like and support. However, I'm always more interested in the plot of a story, than it's fanservice.

Everything in moderation...

I'm probably dating myself here, but I think the mainstream shows of the 80's and 90's got the formula right...fanservice that contributed to humor or added additional thrill without detracting from the plot.

I despise the current trend of ecchi shows that are crammed with fanservice but censor it to encourage viewers to buy the DVD/Blu-ray.

I know I saw this thread somewhere before...well whatever.

To answer the question, it depends.

An overabundance of fanservice to hide a weak to nonexistent plot is just hentai-lite.
Moderate fanservice along with an average to good plot is ideal.

It's a hard balance to achieve but this can usually be used to gauge a show's quality and what the show's creator thinks is important.

So here's the thing, there is no right answer. Whether or not you like fan service is one thing to add on top of the fact that there are situations where it is necessary to explain part of the story in more detail physically. If you don't like fan service At All I advise to not watch highschool, slice of life, etc. as the OP as stated; However, there is a fine line between detail and a device that acts as a sub-episode filler for the sake of entertainment rather than development of plot and characters. In almost all anime I've seen there is some fan service even if its an infinitesimal amount. For this reason, I don't feel it's possible to make fan service an individual sub-section of anime itself.

Personally, I believe it is the current trend of animes to aim at a younger teenage generation and this is one of the ways to get that attention.

In moderation I personally do not mind it at all! Everyone needs a little fanservice!

In many of anime of late I think its a turn off to outsiders. Like only a few anime I can think of in the PAST 7-10 years really can be outsider friendly because non of the fanservice BS causing a WTF to the guy or gal right next to you when you are trying to show it and your going.... um

Really its in my mind the biggest turn off to getting more people in the genre. Though in many ways its just we know western sexual influences in entertainment and Japan version just is WTF to us. Even though many a time its a LOTS less than what we show over here when you think about it.
