I was trying out the free trial for Air Server (http://www.airserver.com/) to see if I could use my PC display like an Apple TV by playing an Anime off my iPad and streaming it directly to my PC monitor.

While the app seems to work fine for other streaming videos like YouTube, on Crunchyroll all I get is a black screen and no sound. The video automatically stops as well without progressing in my iOS device.

Is Crunchyroll incompatible with Air Server? If so, are there any other Apple TV-like solutions for playing a video off my iOS device and streaming it to my PC?

I'm not part of site support, but I am curious about this setup. Does your PC have an internet connection? If so, using the AirServer service would result in lower quality than simply using the streaming version of CR through the website. So why use it to begin with?

From the AirServer help, I noticed the following:

Live streaming apps, such as Amazon instant video, HBO Go, BBC iPlayer, and most sports apps will not be able to stream to AirServer from within the app. This is because of the live http streaming that the apps use. Only Apple TV can decode this information for now, as they are encrypted.

This seems like the most likely issue.

I watch the majority of videos off my big TV, which my PC is connected to. I'm trying to come up with a setup where I won't have to get up and use the mouse or keyboard. The PS3 app doesn't do 1080p and is also buggy, and the XBMC app has its own problems as well.

If I had an Apple TV it wouldn't be a problem, but I can't afford one at the time, so I'm looking into alternate solutions.

Ah, I understand now!

The good news is, it sounds like AirServer is looking into the problem, and may fix it in a future update. In the meantime, there are apps that let you remote control your PC via the iPad which might be more flexible and have better performance. I've used LogMeIn in the past with some success, but not for long term use. Your mileage may vary.

Would it suffice simply to control the PC from your iPad? If so, you may want to consider the Splashtop Touchpad app, which is currently free on the app store.

For that I have Hippo Remote, which works just as well. Launching the video right from your iPad would be even better, though.

If anyone knows of streaming apps that are guaranteed to work with the CR app, I'd like to know about them.

Since the iOS app itself only has 480p video, I assume you are looking for something that will let you navigate the site on the browser on the iPad, but when a video is selected, play it on the computer instead (and I assume in full screen). Is that correct?

Exactly! I use just that (very inexpensive, purchased through Amazon) for watching stuff that isn't available via my Roku. It's been a great, small, inexpensive solution for me.
