Post Reply Do you think Gender roles are ideal or not ideal for the human race?

I'm not touching the gender role topic with a ten foot pole.

However, anime gettng classified as being specific to one gender is nonsense. I know lots of guys that read shoujo, and lots of females that read shounen and seinen, etc. (I am one of them.).

As stated by someone else before, it helps customers in knowing what they're buying .

I think men & women are different and therefore interested in & at times better at different things. So, in some cases - the roles fit. In some cases, the roles don't.

Examples? More women are nurses & teachers than men. Women, in general, are better in those professions than men. More men are engineers & scientists than women. Men, in general, are better in those professions than women. Is this the rule? Of course not. My brother is a great elementary school teacher and excelled in that area. My wife is a chemical engineer who did a great job of it, until she decided to be a stay-at-home mom.

So...i picked the "It's ideal in some aspects but not others." Best of both worlds

I'm okay with gender roles as long as they're only intended to describe roles not the people who are expected to adhere to them. What I mean by that is that gender roles may even be strict but their only purpose is as a guideline, in other words they're optional. I think having gender roles is better because it gives us a basis for which we reflect on our own gender. Without gender roles it would be difficult to really define ourselves. Imagine you are flying a plane with no instruments and there are no clouds and nothing below but the ocean far below. It's difficult to tell what direction you are going in or if you're even really moving forward. I think that's how it is with gender roles, they are guideposts and it's up to us whether we fly past them, around them or stay in one place.

Well, speaking as a transgender individual I think gender roles are the most obnoxious thing ever. Why must men be "strong and dominant" while women be "submissive and weak". It really grinds my gears when people say "you can't hit a girl!". Bud, it's whoever hits you. you hit back. It doesn't matter. If you pick a fight that's your own fault. The older generation makes it worse by telling their son or daughter "that's not lady-like" or "you can't cry cause you are a man". I have a male friend who's father would tell him that he has to act a specific way to be "a man". There is no such thing as being a man or woman. You feel how YOU think you feel and see fit. Gender roles are just crap people made up to brainwash and control. That's all I have to say about that.
