Does CrunchyRoll have any plans on implementing ChromeCast functionality in its Android App ( Or iOS, etc ). Just got my Chromecast in the mail today and it is AWESOME. Would be great if I could use it for Crunchyroll as well.

Have you tried the beta feature of streaming from a tab in the Chrome web browser on your computer? (If you haven't done so already, you'll need to install the Chromecast extension in Chrome to enable it).

My first one doesn't arrive until Monday.

Chrome browser tab (beta) feature does not work on crunchyroll videos... Have to wait for some official support from CR now.

That's disappointing, especially since it can handle regular Hulu:

It is noted later in the video that Amazon Video doesn't work, however, so clearly not all Flash streams are good to go. This also means there apparently is a way for Flash-based sites to block Chromecast.

I took your advice and ChromeTab actually does work (sorta).

I had to open a new Chrome Tab, thn drag it onto its own space ( Im using a Macbook). Open the movie on that tab, cast to my TV then Full screen. THen I can switch to my main space and continue working on whatever I was working on. No lag but a bit cumbersome. But it DOES work.

P.S. Not sure about the CrunchyRoll Beta stuff though.

Looks like (beta) tab casting does work. :D
Not sure why it was not working last time I tried it. So again, it does work with crunchy videos.

I heard that the beta tab casting was limited to 720p (SOURCE: https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/3265953?hl=en&ref_topic=3210038 ) I'll experiment like this when mine arrives this week, but in case you observed anything like this - I noticed in this image it seems you're streaming at 1080. Do you notice a difference in quality on your TV whether you stream at 1080p vs 720p on Crunchyroll?

Quality difference between 1080 and 720 is very minimal. When casting a tab the quality is not the best, at points the projected tab looks pixelated, and distorted, but as soon and you full screen the video the quality gets better. Until CR starts officially supporting chromecast, you won't get the best quality. But as for now, it works good.

While casting the tab works and 720p does look good, it will be nice to have the casting features of Youtube and Netflix where you can use your phone or a computer as a remote. This way your computer or phone is only directing the chromecast to grab the stream directly from CR, instead of having to transcode the video on the fly to the chromecast.

Casting the tab tends to look a bit laggy because it is rendered on the local machine and sent over wifi to the dongle, even on a high end gaming rig you wont get it perfect and on laptops/low end rigs it will be significantly more noticeable. Native integration is ideal as then chromecast can pull the data directly from the servers.

If you want to poke around the implementation start here http://www.dial-multiscreen.org/home

A bit on the hardware requirements for tab casting, per Engadget:

The minimum hardware requirement for HD playback on a Windows machine is a second-gen Core i5 CPU clocked at 2GHz or higher, while mirroring at 480p requires a Core i3 or equivalent processor.

EDIT:

I recieved my Chromecast and immediately ran into a big stumbling block. To set up the Chromecast, it wants WiFi on the device it is attached to; being a computer connected to a network that has wireless access won't cut it.

"Well, I guess I'll use my iPod Touch". In Safari, I got the message stating I must be using the Chrome browser. No problem; I download and install it...same message. (Apparently Google Chrome on iOS isn't really Chrome after all).

Fortunately, I have an unused 802.11n USB dongle I can plug into my PC, otherwise I would have a device I simply couldn't begin to use.
