When I was maybe 10 or 11 I didn't want to grow up. I didn't want to be a teenager, and I didn't want to be an adult. Sure enough, being a teenager sucked balls, but I was happy to find that being an adult is actually pretty good (I certainly have a lot more freedom now than when I was a kid, which I think makes it worthwhile). I look back fondly on my childhood, and wouldn't mind going back to it if I could, but being an adult and driving down the highway of life and going where you want when you want isn't bad either.

TL;DR

I think being an "adult" just means owning your own life, and having the power to choose what happens to you. It is an inherently positive, and separate from the problem of growing biologically older. Which DOES suck.

Full-version

Many people have mentioned the freedom getting older gets, and I think that's the difference between us as "children" and us as "adults".

I think parents are (in general) too soft on their children, so consider the following to be a metaphor more than my belief about what kind of behaviour is appropriate in a child:

A child has everything given to them, and they aren't expected to be able to control themselves. This is a wonderful feeling for the child, not having a care in the world. At least, it's wonderful until the reality of their powerlessness comes in to play. "No you can't stay up past 8:30", "You have to listen to adults", "No you can't have more ice cream", "No you can't have that new video game" etc.

A child has no accountability. Nothing they can do is their fault, because they're incapable of taking charge of themselves. The flip-side of that is that they don't have the power to choose.

An adult is the opposite - they are entirely accountable for their behaviour, which means being responsible for everything in their life. Personally, I've never been scared of responsibility because I understand that it is a result of accountability, which gives me power over my life.

Two final thoughts:

1) From the day we are born until the day we die, we are the only ones ultimately accountable for the state of our lives, our health and our relationships. No one else has the same motivation for our wellbeing as we do - they're too busy looking out for themselves. Even our parents have the goal of making us self-sufficient, meaning they don't want to be looking out for us our entire lives.

2) I am not talking about youth here. Youth (being biologically young) is a terrible thing to lose, and sucks no matter what.

I've never been really scared of the responsibilities and pressures that come with getting older. I always looked forward to it, it's definitely hard sometimes and can be a bummer but it's rewarding to be able to persevere through it. <---- haha I know it sounds corny

Now being scared of the effects of time on how I look is a whole different story lol
I'm wishing on a star that the good genes in my family doesn't skip me. My mom is 62 but, has the looks and the energy, of someone in her 40s and my brothers are 40 and look 10 years younger, my dad did as well. So I'm crossing my fingers haha =^_^=

Never had that problem i knew from a very young age what i wanted and worked hard to get it.
I started working in my Fathers company's at a young age everyday after school and went to seminars to prepare me for the time i would take it over.
All the time i wanted to grow up faster so finally be able to archive my goals.
However i never was afraid of responsibilities i rather welcomed them and grew on them. (i occasionally failed causing dmg in the 6digits but that's a learning process i welcomed as well)

I am in my young 30s now and retired i will not have to work ever again (if i don't want to) i got the lifestyle i wanted i worked hard and wasn't afraid of it.Sure i didn't have much time to watch any Animes before 2010 nor did i read any mangas but now i have the rest of my live to do that just as much as i want (well and as much as my wife will tolerate i guess lol)

You say you don't want the responsibilities you don't want that Lifestyle well i say it all comes down to what you make out of your life but with the kind of attitude it prolly will be a bumpy way of growing up.
Do not be afraid to grow up don't hide from the responsibilities and just create your lifestyle that you would enjoy.

I wouldn't want to get older when I grow up, but there are things in life as an adult I would be able to do. For example, I could go out more without having my parents permission.

Im in my early 30's and life has just been way too much lately. I guess that is one of the things that brought me to this site. Anime and manga is a great escape from the realities of life.
