Asus is the way to go. Toshiba is fairly ok. Nothing special. I don't like Sony though so thats my bias.

But if you are going to college get a laptop cause you will need to move around often. If not, just buy a desktop.

don't get a dell. my friend got a new dell laptop last year and now it's totally dying, and it hasn't even been a year. dell computers suck too. if you're thinking of getting a laptop for college or something like that where it will replace your home pc, you should really spend $1000 for a good laptop like the new sony vaio. i got one of those in november and it's really great. i used to hate laptops myself and thought they sucked, but they make really nice ones now if you're willing to pay for it.

Yes! Don't get a Dell! Get a Mac

Get the new vista ones.^^

What? Seriously, this is not necessary. You'll be fine working with a computer that has XP in it, especially since you'll be using it for school.

But maybe it'd be good to clarify what exactly you plan to use it for. Will you be using it for simply keeping data and taking down notes? Then any other laptop will do fine (but I don't recommend Dell). Do you have any other hobbies or tasks that need to be done on a laptop? If you're into design, you might want to take into consideration the graphics card and RAM of the machine. In fact, these are things to look at for mostly any special tasks you'd like to do.

For what purpose are you going to use it for? Just general? If so just get like toshiba or something. Its cheap yet durable.... and right now... get XP over vista cause most laptops don't come with enough ram and vista really isn't that much more special than XP

so aka:

Toshiba for general use (its really cheap too)

and Asus for gaming/more graphical use. In case you're an engineer that might need the graphical power later

Do what I did and date your boyfriend for like 5 months then he got one for free and just gave it to me because he didn't want it. xD Easy-peasy.

Too bad no ones getting it for you. Haha.

I suppose this persons opinion can't be changed. Just don't get any of the following laptops.

HP
Compac
Alienware
Gateway

I say go for:

ASUS
Sony vaio
Dell

Make sure you buy a separate mouse because laptop mouses are shitty

Also, make sure you don't do anything on the laptop besides text based writing, nothing running in the background, and don't use the extreme memory hog: Windows.

to save time with Linux, get a Dell laptop with Linux preinstalled, or hit-up E-bay for a nice laptop with Linux pre-installed.

I recommend Ubuntu.

Oh, and drain the battery when you first get it, do not plug it in ASAP. Kill that battery, fully charge it, then use it.

Jay you will be happy to know i put linux on my xps not a week and half ago and its rather dishy i must say :)

Get a mac. They are quite different at first because it runs off of Safari instead of IE. But you can install firefox later. It also has good games on it, good quality and most of all GOOD SERVICE! Man! I bought a Dell and I had to wait a whole hour before someone qualified could actually say "hello". So get a mac. I think they might be on sale too...
