I have a Sony Vaio and I love it, but 700 dollars might be pushing it for a good laptop.

the only things i will be doing will be using the word processor and using the internet. i'm probably not going to be downloading much either. and should i buy one off ebay or buy a new one?
btw i'm looking at toshiba ones atm

If you're only using it for Word and the Intrawebs, you don't need to spend $700 lulz. You could easily spend only half of that money if that's all you're going to do. Then you can spend the rest on a wireless router and other crap.

Go to http://www.newegg.com/ and browse under 'Notebooks'. You can limit your search by price, manufacturer, etc. Stick with Windows XP rather than Vista, there still are some laptops on the site with XP. I don't like Toshiba, I would stick with ASUS, Dell, Sony Vaio, and HP.

I have a Sony Vaio. Seems nice to me. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16834117321

EDIT: Listen to happyxix. It sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

^^Edit:Jinx?

Pretty much any laptop will be capable of doing this. Don't buy off ebay. I'd recommend newegg.com but I haven't ordered any computers from them.

Hell, in terms of longevity you might actually want a slower computer. If the laptop you do choose doesn't come with an automatic underclock scheme, you might want to set one up to reduce noise and heat.

The hard disk in laptops is usually tied with the adapter in terms of dying, so you might want to keep all your writing on a thumb drive or an external disk.

Also, to MushroomJay, getting a laptop built with Ubuntu really isn't much better then getting one with Windows. Most manufacturers include a bit of extra software on the install cd to pay for the OS, so currently the cost difference isn't huge (though if you're getting a desktop, certainly build your own and go with a linux flavor, save a few hundred bucks). The only thing that you get with a linux laptop is the assurance that all the hardware works. So far all the laptops I've seen have been able to install linux without much trouble.

Windows is probably better suited to his needs anyways. Open source is great, but trying to shove it down people's throats only annoys them. Even if you are successful in a conversion that's just one more person taking up time on help forums detracting from me!

A piece of advice to the OP: I would not listen to most of the opinions on here; although some are valid, many are nothing more than opinion.

Personally, if I were you, I would ask my question on a forum dedicated to computers. As such I would have to recommend that you give MaximumPC's forums a try ---> http://www.maximumpc.com/forums/index.php?sid=59edc9d5d45bbc766f499d5ede108c0f.

Now as for when you get ready to buy your laptop, red had the right idea...Go to newegg... http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2030260032+4021&name=%24500+-+%24750 is the page for laptops between $500 and $750. From there you pretty much just need to go browsing and find something to suit your needs (Note: Reading reviews is generally recommended, but only if you can differentiate between those who know what they are talking about and those who don't)...

Good luck in your hunt. If you actually want me to help you out a bit more, feel free to PM me and I could try finding you something that would match your needs, ect.

Generally, any new laptop thats a dual core will suffice...most of them are pretty strong with at least 1GB of ram, and a decent hard drive.

Other accounts are the weight, battery life, and screen size.

Then there are other goodies, like firewire, remotes, built in camera, etc etc

So it all depends what you'll be using it for.
