Anime Poll: Do you find yourself getting easily attached to "broken" characters?
Posted 7/30/13
By "broken", I mean a character who... didn't live through a conventional upbringing... or maybe was affected by a terrible incident later in life...

Examples: Yuno from Mirai Nikki
Sasuke from Naruto
Squall from FF8

My vote: Yes

I think it just depends. For me, I think how they present the stories of the "broken" characters is what will determine whether or not I'll get attached to them or not. And that may vary from "broken" character to "broken" character.

But I'll vote yes, since I tend to be a bit of an emotional person, so it isn't too unusual for me to start caring for the majority of characters that have had it rough in their anime life. xD

depends on the kind of broken. I have a kind of "knight in shining armor" complex when it comes to the opposite sex. So when I see slightly damaged characters I just want to huggem'.

This sums it up almost perfectly for me.

I'll also add that I often have great respect characters (and real people) who are "broken" and yet still manage to overcome their situation, disability, etc... As someone who has his own share of difficulties to overcome, these kind of characters are very inspiring, and I easily get attached to them. However, like suikojay said; it really can be influenced on how they present the stories, and how the character acts.

If they're emo about it then it's just plain annoying.

It depends on how any of their changes or stories relate to everything and how effective they are as a character. If it's just another sob story with an overbearing character then no. But usually they hide things and their past is a mystery that links things together and I just want to hug them sooooo bad!

So usually yes.

Usually it's a yes. It really does depend on the character. Like how and why things end up the way it did, how they move on in accordance with the story, and how they act and react to other characters in the story. Depending on the character, I could feel personally attached to them or I could just plain dislike them for whatever personal opinion I have. I'll use two characters and another one as an example. I feel personally attached to someone like Yuno,m y opinion on Sasuke is forever changing, and one broken character that I don't like is Alois.

Edward Elric, probably one of the characters who I find that has one of the most broken lives out there. I'm very attached to him because of the things he's been through. I can relate to him to most situations, but not all.

Great example

I remember crying when watching the flashbacks about his past and his mistakes.
