I really needed to get this out of my system before I go haywire. Remember when I mentioned some anime can go too far and it can be overly offensive, even to the anime fanbase of both Japanese and western audiences? Guess what, I watch two anime series that completely fits that title. I heard of how bad and horrible it is, from any people that said it on many blogs, anonymous YouTube reviews, especially some reviews from the JesuOtaku Anime Review show, part of That Guy With The Glasses and DesuDes Brigade, but like a curious idiot, I decided to check out 2 series: Ikki Tousen (一騎当千 Ikkitōsen?, lit. "Strength of a Thousand") and Eiken (エイケン?). They obviously have something in common: They are both mostly fanservice bait shows and their contributors are J.C. Staff, an anime company I never heard of until now and they are completely hacks.

And I thought Sucker Punch is really stupid.

and with that introduction out of the way, let's get into..........

First up:

Ikki Touse
n

Seven high schools in Japan are waging out an all-out turf war for ruling the terriorities and one fighter stands out and her name is Hakufu Sonsaku. She is a high school student transfer to Nanyo Academy and she is a highly skilled fighter, but to make more amusing, she has the personality of a ditzy valley girl.

Hakufu Sonsaku is basically just there for the money shots in the series. In mostly every scene in the series, this is an upskirt panty shot whenever she's fighting or doing whatever the hell she does. Not to mention, she really adds the unnecessary relationship between her and her cousin Koukin whenever she obviously does stuff like spanking her ass, almost having her top off, and her uniform getting ripped to shreds every time she fights. Seriously, who made those uniforms, Brawny? Koukin is basically the guy who gets nervous whenever he's in the presence of being near girls' breasts; however, he gets a pass because IT'S HIS FUCKING COUSIN. The other characters like Ryomou are really there for more applied fanservice and Ryofu for the same reason and for a little yuri. That's right. She goes both ways with another girl named Chinkyu and blah blah blah. Who really cares?

As for the animation……Oh wait, what animation exists here? It’s mostly still shots of fighting instead of actual fighting because the animators were too busy of ridiculous boob physics. Some of the background work looks fine but still, the main part of the series was supposed to be the fights and yet the fights are really weak and uninspired to intent.

The music is so-so and nothing to give a damn about. It’s mostly generic J-Pop in the beginning and in the end something that was sentimental and yet doesn’t fit the tone to the series due to his overwhelming ridiculousness and speaking of that, I can’t believe how bad the Geneon/New Generation Pictures dub is and fuck, this is one of the worst dubs I ever watch with Carrie Savage, whose natural charm of naïve and cuteness, doesn’t work on a character who’s not even hateful but just pure damn annoying. You might as well just watch the sub…..wait, wrong statement…..yeah, just don’t watch it.

Eike
n

In this 2 episode series, Densuke Mifune is a high school student who stumbles upon the love of his life, Chiharu Shinomone, and by stumble, I mean they bumped into each other and the first thing he stumble was her enormous F-Cup (yes, F-Cup!) breasts and so, he is forced to join the Eiken Club, where he's surrounded by many girls, also with enormous endowments.

Densuke is mostly what I mentioned about Koukin. He get aroused by pretty women but he gets nervous and fidgety. That's mostly it. All the other characters basically have no characteristics besides getting Densuke to sexually grab them and arouse them. Basically, it's man rape and he doesn't enjoy it that much. Also, what's it called when you take something but it gets out of hand?

Oh yeah, it's OVERKILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why in the hell does....a 6th grade girl.....has breasts the size of fucking basketballs? Why the purple-haired girl does only seems to eat only phallic-shaped foods? The bungee-jumping scene? That falling down scene which seems like Paul WS Anderson directed this? (Yeah, I'm letting Zack Snyder slide this time.) The yogurt slide? The chocoslide? Eels up the @&#*$! ? That sister of Chiharu whose mission in life is to get Densuke to fuck her? Everybody has to flash their asses? We get it!! You are fan service but there is something called SUBTLETY and nobody in here seems to know this.

For terms in all areas of animation, music, and especially both voice acting, let me just say this is the worst example of those: The animation is either being re-used for some occasion, the scenes of the ramen and yogurt that’s made to look like jizz…..yeah, that’s possibly from all the animators, creator, writer and the director. It’s either used for comedic effort and yet, it’s not funny at all, just shock for shock and it turns out lame. The music is very forgetful, yes, they have beginning and ending songs but did you really remember those rights out of the gate? The dub done by Media Blasters and using Arvintel Media Productions for the ADR work……big fucking dumb mistake as they are completely incompetent with the worst voice acting from voice actors who are actually good and yet it breaks my heart hearing Stephanie Sheh (under a different name by the way) voicing Chiharu as I know she has done better voice roles in her career. Hell, most people who watched and reviewed Kanokon know the dub voice acting was terrible.

FINAL VERDIC
T:

I can choose only which one is the worst of them all. I can say both but I'm not gonna take the easy way out. There isn't going to be a cop out. The worst anime of those two is:

but really, the truth is that:

I HATE THEM BOTH!! ‘NUFF SAID.

Planet Tyro Ratings:

Get ready to handle a lot of ruckus to be going on as we about the enter into the 1920s and 1930s and back to the 18th century in "Baccano!"

Baccano! is based on the Japanese light novel series by Ryogho Narita & Katsumi Enami. The anime is told by many points of view with intersecting storylines and plot details and it is also a character ensemble anime because it really focus on more than one character. One part of the series is an elixir which can make you immortal and I already know all of you know what that means, but you can end the life of another immortal by absorbing them. Years later, the exilir is stolen and it moves around all throughout the city which leads up to the train, The Flying Pussyfoot. The storylines does intersect with one another now and then. You should really pay attention to each storyline in order to get it right and not get confused.

Like I say, this is mainly an character ensemble anime and there is a lot of characters to remember, such as, Szilard Quates, an immortal who became immortal in 1711 and wants to exploit the exilir to the world but the others disagreed and he just kills the original immortals. Dallas Genoard, a small-time thug, was the first to steal the exilir and use it as well, unfortunately, him and his gang were caught by The Gandor Brothers (Keith, Berga & Luck) but his sister Eve has been worried about him and tries to search for him, despite being scared of the gritty NY streets. We also met the comic reliefs of the show, Isaac Dian & Miria Harvent, eccentric yet moronic (also likable) thieves/lovers and they also encounter with other characters, such as, Firo Prochainezo & Maiza Avaro, from the Martillo family mafia and homunclus created by Szilard named Ennis, btw, cute girl but has the second-most weirdest name of the show.

There is Ladd Russo, who I swear, is the most crazy-ass sadistic homicidal killer I have seen in any other media. If him and the Joker would have met, well, it'll be fun to watch and the fact that he promises his fiancee, Lua Klein, that after he kills everybody on the train, he'll kill her. That's love for you, isn't it? Also, he is part of the Russo family mafia led by Placido Russo, who can't control the psycho motherfucker that is his nephew (Ladd). You also meet bootleggers by the identity of a shy and polite (you heard me) gang leader by the name of Jacuzzi Splot and who really named him that? Part of his gang is explosive expert and childhood friend of Jacuzzi's Nice Holystone, who still does this business despite losing a right eye and knife fighter Chane Laforet and there is also Czeslaw Meyer, who's been a immortal child ever since 1711 and also has been the result of getting beaten to death, stab in the eye with a hot coal and shot numerous times. You probably get sick of that, too.

The animation is really great, capturing the timeline and style of 1930s New York and Chicago and all the surroundings. The story and characters will have you curious about each episode and the music is timely appropriate and the opening theme and sequence (above me) is very well done and that includes the song, "Guns & Roses" by Paradise Lunch.

FINAL VERDICT:This is a delightful show to watch. It has a interesting plot and storyline with characters you might relate to, despite some massive violence by Shoot' em Up Russo. I would recommend this for any anime voyeur or beginner.

Do I tend to do this so I can torture myself? As you may remember last time, I reviewed Ikki Tousen & Eiken at the same time and I shared my disdain and disgust at this series. Now, I decided to do it one more time with one anime, which doesn’t bother me that much but it’s just as stupid and unnecessary at the other ones, which lead me to……..

Get It? Master of Martial Hearts? Like marital arts, it rhymes? Don’t you get it? (Laughing……) I’m an idiot.

Oh, and to save some time, No, I will not put that ridiculous theme song like I did with the Baccano! Review. Why? Because it is really f**king awful. It is mostly the singer shrieking, screeching and yelling in Japanese at most of the time. I really hated that song and the end music just shift moods after an episode ends, which isn’t a problem but you can’t really take this show seriously with that end music.

I can admit, I don’t mind a little bit of fan service but don’t just shove it down everybody’s throat. For example: girls in their underwear that I don’t mind but an extremely close-up of their privates in every fight scene? It gets too old and just becomes irritating and pointless. Not to mention that not only does the uniforms rip apart during a fight like tissue, hell, even the bras snap and break when come to fisticuffs and the animation ranges from mediocre to meh. You will see nipples alright for the fan service voyeurs but the breast size unexpectedly changes from big to small.

Okay, the plot. Well, it is about women fighting for a jewel which can grant any wish you want. Really, that’s it. It almost sounds like the plot of the 1st season of Ikki Tousen. It’s really nothing new.

The characters are, in my opinion, least annoying but still are irritating. Aya is our main character du jour. Unlike Hakufu, she isn’t an annoying ditz but albeit, a bland one at that and her best friend in the world, Natsume, as in she just talk too damn much and most likely, a cause to write fan fiction about them. Then there’s the first encounter of the show Miko or just call her Priestess (Miko does mean ‘priestess’ in Japanese). At first, she's also bland and yet this is second girl named Miko to annoy the hell out of me.

Technically, I haven’t watch Episode 5 yet, so I’ll let you know how it’ll goes after it goes.

Okay, she won already? That's it. The end, right?

15 more minutes later...........

Okay, what the fuck was that? At first, I was actually started to feel sorry for these characters but FUCK THESE PEOPLE!!!!! I don’t tend to spoil anything for you because of many various reasons but it pulls a twist just straight up there and it just not that, the very end, it pull a Sopranos style ending, as in, you don’t get to see what happens. They are just dicking you off.

FINAL VERDICT
:

This is a fucked-up and horrendous show. The plot is mainly blah and mostly unoriginal but it is done better than that other show. It’s not the worse anime show I watched and it’s definitely no Eiken, which is good news. It didn’t pissed me off that much and it leaves an dirty taste in your mouth.

You can picture the main wolves in this show as the Lost Boys but they’re not vampires, right? Regular wolves, not werewolves, and, no, I will not make a damn Twilight reference in this review, so don’t be worried. This is Wolf's Rain.

PLOT/SYNOPSIS:

Old legend say that when the world is coming towards an end, Paradise will appear but only wolves will know how to find it, despite the fact that they are believed to be hunted down and are extinct but they take on by surviving in human form. There is also another side story where a flower maiden is destined to lead the wolves onto Paradise but her creator stole her from the laboratory to use her for his own gains.

CHARACTERS:

For characters of the show, the main 4 consists of:

Kiba, the leader of the pack as an Arctic Wolf devoted himself to find the Lunar Flower and Paradise, but he’s disgusted by the human disguises most wolves use. Technically, he is sort of the stoic one in the group.

Tsume, the rebel of the group as an Grey Wolf, one of the stronger fighters of the group and only join because he was kind of bored. Also, he is also a bad-ass and always quarrels with Kiba mostly all the time and that also reminds me…... Note to self: Never read any Wolf’s Rain fan fiction.

Next up is Hige, the comic relief of the group As an Mexican wolf who likes where he is at. He reluctantly agrees to go search for Paradise, but he isn’t all that serious about it and possibly has amnesia, but that happens later throughout the series.

Toboe is the 4th member of the pack as a Red Wolf and he is the youngest and the friendliest of the group, which means he is mostly the wimp. He is also protective towards most humans….especially ex-Sheriff Quent Yaiden, although he has a deep hatred of wolves and spent his life hunting them down and killing them with his own dog named Blue, who keeps him company and aid him and once Blue changes into her human form, she is pretty hot in a way, but that would be weird since she is half human and half wolf and I don’t think committing bestiality would help me and……damn it , I’m not making a damn reference of that.

Cheza is the aforementioned flower maiden and artificially made girl under the care of Cher Degré, a scientist who studied her and is fascinated by her…….oh yeah, she is also divorced from her husband, Hubb Lebowski, a police detective, but they later reconciled. Also, Cheza is created by Lord Darcia the 3rd and using her to revive his lover and it didn’t work well, which means he has gone insane.

The animation is really top-notch, leaving little or no mistakes in production and most of the voice acting in here was very impressive, especially the English dub. The music by Yoko Kanno…..well, how can you not love it? The themes of the show, “Stray” (conveniently when I heard this song, it always sounded like “Strange”) and “Gravity” really fit the tone of the show. Character development is existent here and is done wonderfully and you can get emotional for these people but don’t get too close because there are a lot of deaths in this show, especially from the main characters and the tone is very dark in the show, especially during the last 4 episodes.

FINAL VERDICT:

This is an emotional and well done anime series. It can pull your heart strings at some parts, but most shows should do that……..if it is a drama. This is actually a must-see, an must-buy and/or just get the damn series either by physical or digital media. We will not regret it.

Xam'd: Lost Memories, released in Japan as Bounen no Zamned (亡念のザムド, Bōnen no Zamudo?, lit. Zamned of the Lost Memory) was released exclusively first in the US (completely in the original Japanese dub) on the Playstation 3, when it launched its PSN video service during E3 2008. It was the most downloaded video during that first launch, although after that, I haven’t heard any original scripted content from the PS Network ever since. So let’s dive right on in.

The series takes place on a small island called Sentan Island, a safe haven where they are surrounded by the Yuden Sea as they are cut off from the War between the Northern Government and the Southern Continent Free Zone. But on one day, when student Akiyuki Takehara let in a strange and mysterious girl on the bus and as it turns out to be that she was a bomber and the bus explodes and yes, it did kill some students and Akiyuki check the damage on the bus, a light enters into Akiyuki’s arm and starts to transform into a thorn-like creature called Xam’d. As the existence of an Xam’d has been made, most of the military has gotten its arms up, especially with Akiyuki’s old friends, Haru Nishimura, who I suspect in the first episode that sooner or later, will be in love with Akiyuki, and Furuichi Teraoka, who I also suspect has a crush on Haru and not that exactly that keen on Akiyuki, considering that Furuichi thought that he didn’t care about that day and wanted to kill Akiyuki, which is mainly fueled by jealousy and anger.

As he is now a Xam’d, he runs into Nakiami, a very apathetic and mysterious woman and she gives Akiyuki a choice: either come with her and live or he can stay and forever turn into stone and yes, he chose the former and went along to meet the crew of the Gekkostate the Zanbani Postal Airship, where you meet the captain Ishuu Benikawa, who is mostly has the strong-willed character trait; Akushiba, Akiyuki’s roommate aboard the ship; Raigyo, a experienced Xam’d; Yunbo, the team mom of the ship; Ahm, the pilot; Kisel, the mechanic & Tenshin-Sama, the old sage and guide for the main characters. Another storyline involves Haru’s younger sister, Midori, who needs a crutch to walk since the car accident that tragically took their mother’s life, being taken into a military facility and being transformed into the Hiruken Emperor, which her father and Ryuuzou, Akiyuki’s father, break in to rescue her; however, Fusa, estranged wife of Ryuuzou and mother of Akiyuki, isn’t exactly keen on him lately, as she thinks he is not that compassionate about his son being missing although he was the last to know about his disappearance but kept his cool in order to keep the family together.

Oh yeah, there is another character named Yango, who travels alongside Nakiami, and there was a bond between the two of them and I don’t know if a romance was going to blossomed or not. It just seem shoehorned at the last minute to me.

The animation production is exactly is standard with a little or no flaws to it and was very vibrant. The main themes of the series that I heard “Shut Up and Explode” by Japanese electronic rock band Boom Boom Satellites, which is very high-energetic and kind of fun song to listen to. The ending song “Vacancy” by Kylee was very mellow and mostly sleepy to me and that is all. The 2009 TV broadcasts used different music themes from the same artists.

FINAL VERDICT
:

This is mostly an enjoyable show but at the same it is kind of bland and I felt like I seen it before. It’s not a bad show. It’s just not as interesting as I thought it was going to be. The characters are decent to a point and some are a bit cliched but isn’t that in your face about it. The storylines does seem to drag on, especially at the end. I would rate this lower but it wouldn’t be fair to me, so that’s why the final rating for this is:

7/10

Interesting…..for a little while.

MADLAX

As part 2 of the “girls-with-guns” trilogy by Bee Train, Madlax (which seems like the name of a laxative) alternates storylines between the two leads, the title character Madlax, an efficient special ops agent for hire in the country of war-torn Gazth-Sonika and is mainly similar to Mirelle with a dash of Kirika of Noir. Yeah, there are similarities between this & Noir like the other main character Margaret Burton, a clumsy amnesiac (see?) living in Nafrece, a France-styled country and yes, her parents are dead as well and similar to another character on the fore-mentioned show. But Margaret has a few people looking after her, such as Vanessa Rene, her former tutor whose parents died in the Gazth-Sonikan war and found out that her employer supplying weapons for both sides of the war and apparently yuri bait for most of the episodes for Madlax since Vanessa hired her for protection, not that I’m complaining but yes, that similarity trope keeps coming back and that also follows to Elenore Baker, Margaret’s devoted maid and sometimes mom-figure and friend.

The main villain or secret criminal network du jour is called Enfant (Les Soldats, anyone?) and led by a man named Friday Monday (Seriously, who comes up with these names?) with agents Carrossea Doon, one of Enfant’s top operatives and right hand man of Monday & Limelda Jorg, the second lieutenant of the Gazth-Sonikan Royal Guard who obviously had a grudge against Madlax for an assassination attempt that she failed to stop and that yuri factor does kick in for her, too.

There is somewhat of a twist to the show and the main characters as most of the first half of the series, they never appeared together until halfway in but I’m not going to spoil anything for you.

FINAL VERDICT: This show is just a carbon copy of its predecessor with a few changes and twists. Some characters are mostly decent and well-acted (the two leads) and some are just there for mostly there to make the difference. The animation is somewhat muted most of the time and the music is okay, conducted by the same composer Yuki Kajiura, who did all the “girls-with-guns” trilogy shows. It’s very too similar but it’s passable.

Eden of The East has a very strange concept behind this and somewhat is a bit controversial or bring some topical allusions to it. From Production I.G., who brought us The Ghost in The Shell franchise, Blood: The Last Vampire, Blood+, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade & the anime sequence in Kill Bill, Vol. 1. And this series is directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who also directed the GITS TV Series.

11/22/10, ten missiles strike uninhabited areas of Japan, but on the bright side, no victims were harmed and it was named Careless Monday and no one really cared about that. This situation still does occur throughout the show.

Meet Saki Morimi, a young Japanese woman visiting Washington D.C. on a trip and then she meets an mysterious Japanese man, whose introduction is mostly him being naked carrying a gun and a cell phone with the amount of ¥8.2 billion in digital money but apparently you know waving a gun on the nation’s capital isn’t a grand idea. The guy goes by Akira (not that one) Takizawa and he is part of some game where it consists of a Seleção of 12 individuals that are given ¥10 billion to save Japan in some way with help from the phone operator named Juiz to fulfill any order for a price but used the money for your own selfish needs, you are instantly eliminated.

But I bet you wonder this: “Who the hell are the Eden of The East?” Good question.

The name comes from the name of a cell phone application developed by Saki’s friends, which is mostly a much-improved version of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube mashed in together. The members include: Satoshi Ōsugi, Saki’s friend who does, in fact, has a crush on Saki but when she neglects him for Akira, the typical love triangle or something like that happens; Kazuomi Hirasawa, the de facto leader who wants to create a NEET Paradise; Mikuru Katsuhara, or Micchan, the talented yet shy and frank (also a character I can relate to….a little and cute, too) programmer who programmed the image recognition system and Yutaka Itazu, a prodigal reclusive hacker whose nickname is “Panties” because he lost his pants and never went outside again.

There is another character Kuroha Diana Shiratori, who is a president of a model agency by day and a mysterious serial killer who kill men by cutting off their penises and yes, that does sound like it hurt like hell but she only kills rapists so if you’re respectful to women, you are safe.

FINAL VERDICT: This is an so-so and mostly innovative show but kind of hard to understand when watching it for the first time, much like Ghost in The Shell, both the movies and the series. The main characters are decent but the supporting characters did a top-notch job. Both the animation is really superb and vivid. The themes of this show are slightly controversial but it is mostly done in a subtle way and the music is acceptable, although I wonder why that one theme song in the 1st episode by Oasis was used only once but used another one for the reminder. But I am not done with this franchise yet…….there is still 2 more entries, but that’s for another day. Now I bid you Noblesse Oblige.

(Author's Note: Man, I have a lot to work with. No, seriously, this is the hardest anime I ever had to review or try to analyze in a way due to most of its many themes of psych analogy, mental illnesses and emotional problems and yes, this is that anime.)

From the earlier days of famed anime studio, Gainax (creators of later works as FLCL & Gurren Lagann), Neon Genesis Evangelion centers around efforts of NERV, the paramilitary organization to fight the monstrous outer beings called Angels by using giant mechas called Evangelions, which are being piloted by select teenagers, which I really do not get. Why you select teenagers to fight these Angels? I get that people who are 18 or up can have permission to fight overseas but then again, with me being in the Western part of the world, there are different standards and traditions around the world after all but like a crime procedural, there are about 16 (well, 17) angels to battle in most of the episodes and it’s kind of the monster-of-the-week show while we get into more of the character development, and speaking of the characters……….

The likability of the characters in the show averages to “they are decent characters” and “somebody, please, slap one of them”. Meet Shinji Ikari, the main character (or the Third Child) and pilot of the EVA Unit 01, although it’s not like he wanted the job, his father Gendo Ikari forces him to do it. Yeah, Shinji was some major daddy issues considering that he was abandoned as a toddler and a motherless child. I wanted to think that there were some similarities between him and Tidus from Final Fantasy X, but Shinji wasn’t that annoying, although if I hear, “I mustn’t run away!! “I mustn’t run away!! “I mustn’t run away!!” I swear I will throttle him but this isn’t the worst phrase I heard. Shinji tries to develop himself to speak up more, be more confident, and man up but that just goes nowhere and that can become very annoying.

Rei Ayanami is the First Child and the pilot of the Unit 00. Rei, to me, is a neutral character to deal with. She is an introvert and impersonal, with Gendo Ikari being the closest person she ever contacted with. However, she is, in fact, a doll as clones of her were developed in case she dies and her soul is transferred to another body. Rei is seemingly the only one who does keep her cool at a few times, but here is a few warnings for my description of the next character: If you happen to like this character, you might hate me or just respectfully disagree with me and that is………. Asuka Langley Soryu and she are the Second Child & the pilot of Unit 02 and also, my least favorite character of the show. But why is she? It is because she’s brash? No. Sometimes she can tell the harsh truth that needed to be told. It is because of her verbal abuse to everyone she meet? Mostly, but not because of Shinji, he might have had it coming. But she is just a capital B-I-T-C-H! Yes, sometimes bitchy characters who act like that for the sake of acting bitchy annoys the hell out of me and maybe she doesn’t do that all the time but with her, you just want to--- you know what, I’m not like that. I don’t believe in violence against women at all and I hope that did not send you the wrong message of me.

Misato Katsuragi is the chief operations officer of Nerv. She is a more flawed character throughout in the later episodes and yet, this is my favorite character of the show. How she was brought up is an example; when she was 14, she has gotten seriously injured as the Second Impact was beginning. She survived the Katsuragi Expedition, but her father did not. She also plays the role of guardian for both the whining angsty little bi—I mean, Shinji & Asuka and she has a penguin!!! YAY Penguins!! Wait………a penguin……..that she keep by giving it the fridge for a room. Well, at least, she didn’t order a gaggle full of penguins (unlike a certain Mr. Jim Carrey) and the fact she gets really drunk and is a slob off-duty. Yeah, despite all of that, I still like her. Also other characters include the head scientist of Nerv, Ritsuko Akagi, who are aware of the Evangelion’s true nature, friends with Misato (but they often argue many times) and Ryoji Kaji, who is Misato’s ex and a triple agent investigating Nerv for the Japanese Government. Also there is the classmates Toji Suzuhara, Kensuke Aida & Hikari Horaki, two of the former are friends with Shinji (they aren’t that important) and the latter is Asuka’s only friend (Gee, I wonder why? Yeah, I know why. They’re both [bleep].)

As I explained earlier, the show has a lot of influential themes and symbolism (mainly Christian & Kabbalistic), such as philosophy, military, biological, psychology, religion, Buddhist beliefs, and the Japanese otaku subculture with creator Hideaki Anno’s own experience with clinical depression at the time.

Many examples that some of the characters are named after Japanese WWII warships and such as the two non-important supporting characters I previously mentioned named after the protagonists of Ryu Murakami’s Ai to Genso no Fascism. Many of the characters suffer from deep psychological traumas connected to their loved ones (a la Shinji, Asuka, Misato, Ritsuko) but some of those themes and symbolism does get shoved in there, especially the final 2 episodes and mostly it gets garbled trying to understand it all and if you’re really on an intellectual level that above me, hopefully you can understand it better than me. Most of the time, the angst levels of the characters go so high, you swear you are watching an annoying teen soap. It’s not up to emo levels but Shinji is that one character who really never gets the whole situation. Well, as much as my disdain for Asuka, Shinji never even bother to improve on himself and it gets very forgetful if not.

After those two final episodes, that was a movie called The End of Evangelion to recreate a more detailed ending to replace it and then there is The Rebuild of Evangelion, where just the re-tooling is or completely new version of NGE. I don’t know if that is just milking the franchise so much, soon people will just grew tired and irritated and send death threats to the creator and trash the studio---Oh wait, that did happen. It may have worked on most franchises but some of them have different storylines and characters.

In other terms, the animation does show its age (made over 17 years ago) and great for its time and for most mecha shows, it didn’t feel that generic. The music…….Yes, I love the opening theme song “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis”, which is very energetic and the score is passable, too, with the action and dramatic themes and how many versions of “Fly Me to the Moon” are there or at least covered by many artists at the time? 31. There are thirty-one versions of that song in the franchise itself. I can’t say which one I like the most considering that there are even more versions of that song.

FINAL VERDICT
: This is one of the most confusing, mind-boggling, intriguing, love-hating, and nerve-racking and one of those anime that you have to watch in order to understand the form of it more. The themes can be very interesting at best but it can soon sound mostly contrived. The characters are slightly average with people that you like, feel neutral about, or just loathe. The themes get rattled once you watched it. But the problem with it is that it’s just so pretentious, it wants the audience to understand the philosophical ideals but the show has a hard time trying to explain it on time. It doesn’t have to be a long explanation of clunky and disjointed dialogue but for what it does in the earlier episodes, it’s enjoyable to watch.

And this gets the final score of:

Eflen Lied comes from the production company Studio ARMS, who unfortunately made one anime OVA Series that really was beyond stupid and I really don't want to be reminded of that. This is an horror-theme dramatic anime with some elements of an harem anime at later episodes. The plot is based on a teenage Diclonus (a different human being with different genetic levels, especially with short horn-like protrusions) girl named Lucy, who escaped from a facility built for experimentation and when she escapes, she shows no mercy with the guards, although they kept shooting at her and they don't get the idea that bullets can't kill her that easily and also there are these invisible CG hands that will rip your body into shreds and there is no escaping her power, even a secretary met her end with Lucy, although it would have been better if she wasn't introduced like a main character and it is kinda pointless showing off a character and 2 minutes later, she's dead. Hell, she wasn't even brought back up until the 10th episode in a flashback.

After that, she was injured in the process and now has a secondary child-like personality named Nyu, which does sound like a Pokemon reject. There she meets Kohta and his cousin, Yuka, whom both of them are the most annoying characters in the series for different reasons. I'll start with Yuka, she clearly has affections for Kohta (I don't know why, I'm confused, too.) but every time Nyu is attached to Kohta, she gets uncomfortably jealous and she really pleads for attention too hard and it makes hard for me to actually like or relate to her. Kohta……..is a f***ing idiot. That’s it. That is all I got to say about him……also (A LITTLE SPOILER!), but, hell, he is the reason why his sister and father is dead. Yeah, I said it. I really don't blame (SPOILERS!!!) for their deaths. There is also another Diclonus named Nana, who came up to capture and contain Lucy/Nyu and get side-tracked by Mayu, a 13-year-old homeless girl, who also befriends the main characters and she has a PUPPY!!! YAY PUPPIES!

As you already guess by now, I have a slight problem with this series. Yes, it is a very original concept and that gets points although I get kinda grossed out by the naked little girls covered in blood and some gore was a little unnecessary but it is nowhere near as gory as those Saw movies or shit horror remakes. It either becomes a horror anime or a bit of fanservice anime or harem anime. Studio ARMS didn't fail much this time, although this is one of the earlier works and they have deterred as far as I know. The characters are either complete unlikable jackasses or not that bright in the head. The animation style is vibrant and colorful and you will see lots of red. The theme song "Lilium", while sounding very beautiful is mostly played throughout the series and the closing theme song, that is a skip. Actually, the theme song does manipulate you thinking you'll watching something different.

"AAAAWWWWWW!!!! This is kinda sweet...maybe it isn't that......."

"AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! Dammit!! You tricked me! You sons of bitches! The horror the HHOORRRRROOORRR!!"

FINAL VERDICT: This show had potential to be an good anime but it didn't fulfill it all the way. However, it did not suck at all but it is still creepy all the way.

GAINAX is like the stoner dude of Japanese anime studios that can do whatever they want and still be considered one of the greatest anime studios and also the most influenced but what if they had influence from the Western World?

That is where Panty & Stocking w/Garterbelt comes in.

Panty & Stocking w/Garter belt has a lot of Western Animation influence in course of the style of animation (most of the time but sometimes go to its roots), character design and they even went the route of doing 2 11-minute segments in each episode and episode titles reference some Western pop culture property (Transformers, Death Race, Dawn of The Dead, Back to the Future, etc.) Mostly if FLCL had an orgy with Powerpuff Girls, Invader Zim & My Life as a Teenage Robot, this would be its spawn.

The storyline in here is that two angels (Panty & Stocking) needs to collect enough Heaven Coins to get back into Heaven with the help of afro-priest Garterbelt by defeating the ghosts in Daten City and they do explode in a cheap Godzilla-esque kind of way. But also happens to get side-tracked by two demon girls Scanty & Knee socks (seen later in the series) and bitchiness does ensue between the two sets of sisters.

Other characters include Chuck, the pet that does indeed look like Gir from Invader Zim and yes, I find Chuck annoying as hell and completely useless in this series and Brief, the butt monkey that has a crush of Panty, despite her whoring herself around every guy she finds and bone. Mainly that is Panty’s trait and Stocking……..is f***ing weird. Her trait is that she wolfs down any sweets she can find but she is the most level-headed sister of the duo (which was needed). Garterbelt is the strangest character in the show and I think they had gotten the whole priest with homosexual tendencies reference.

PSG has a large amount of nonsensical surroundings and it doesn’t take itself that seriously and it can get too crazy……..and yet it’s an okay show. I am actually glad that it was marketed as not taken too seriously but sometimes some anime that does market itself as a serious anime but when the final product arrives, it fails to do its job, considering I have watched some anime that have f**ked up its premise. But if it has too much nonsense, it will turn off some people and by that, I mean both anime and non-anime fans.

FINAL VERDICT
: Out of all the GAINAX shows, FLCL, this is not. Gurren Lagann, not that either but it didn’t turn my brain into fresh-squeezed orange juice like Evangelion. It can turn me on and off at the same time and it did its job to entertain me despite some flaws. The animation is very daring but also lazy at a few times and I did like the music of the show, especially the ending theme “Fallen Angel” and “Fly Away”, the insert song where the girls goes into magical girl mode. Unfortunately, some of the characters might get annoying to you like Panty’s a bitch, Stocking’s a sugar crack addict, Garter belt is, well, strange but then again, he is the one to straightened the girls out, I said enough about Chuck but Brief is also as annoying and useless as Chuck but if a Season 2 does get made, I might give that a shot.

As far as I know, every person in all parts of the world has heard of the Shakespeare story that is Romeo & Juliet, either through reading it while in high school, seen it been parodying a few times on TV, featured on the silver screen with the 1939 George Cukor film, the 1969 Franco Zeffirelli film, the 1996 Baz Luhrmann MTV-inspired film and other numerous amount of films and media that either have parallel situations too many to count (and yes, that does include Romeo Must Die or Gnomeo & Juliet). But what if anime had a turn with the play? Can it turn out to be good or like the Three Musketeers adaptation directed by Paul WS Anderson, it could go downhill from here?

The plot is still quite similar to the play with some major differences to the play. The Capulets and Montagues are still feuding adversies like in the play but unfortunately for the Capulets, they don’t have a lasting appearance even during the start of the series. Leontes Montague and his men led a bloody coup and murdered every member of the Capulet family, with the exception of one person and yes, it is Juliet Fiammatta Arst De Capulet also known as Odin, when she disguises herself as a boy with short hair. She also masquerades as a vigilante by the name of the Red Whirlwind, who swore to aid the people who suffer from the reign of Lord Montague and his men. However, here comes Romeo Candore De Montague, who is generally the polar opposite of his father. He is kind-hearted, obedient, and noble and as you may guess, he and Juliet start to fall for each other.

This is actually quite a change-up for the better. The gender roles here might be switched as the primary focus in the series is Juliet. In other adaptations and the original play, Juliet is mainly the shy and meek girl but in here, she’s a very strong, independent, and well-thought out character and is actually quite likable and Romeo, on the other hand, is really not that interesting at first, but he does get to that point where everything starts to fall into place. Another change from the play, while Juliet is arranged to be married to Count Paris; in the anime, Romeo is the one to be arranged married with Hermione, a young noblewoman from the House of Borromeo, and yet she’s not really a character from the play. Most of their characters in the story are borrowed from other Shakespeare plays.

Other characters include Cordelia, Juliet’s best friend since childhood and also the representation of the unnamed nurse in the play; Conrad, captain of the Capulet Guards and the one who saved Juliet from the massacre; Francisco and Curio, a duo part of Juliet’s friends who fought alongside her; Tybalt, a mysterious warrior (also a vigilante) also has a deep-seated hatred for Lord Montague (and one of the reasons I can’t reveal to you. It is, after all, a spoiler); Antonio, Juliet’s sidekick; & William, a playwright whose works have not been well-received and also has allusions and pictured as a caricature to William Shakespeare; Benvolio, one of Romeo’s close friends; Mercutio, an sly noble who wants to become Montague’s heir due and soon become mostly like him, mainly because Titus, his father, is an degenerate alcoholic and Mercutio is often ashamed of him.

The only slight problem I had in the series is the villains, who are just insanely evil just to be insanely evil. They obviously don’t care that people are rebelling against them and the fact they are just being dicks. They have no motivation but just to do what they want to do and that’s it.

The music score is well-made and appropriately goes along with the series. The opening song, "Inori~You Raise Me Up〜" (祈り〜You Raise Me Up〜)?) by Lena Park, is a love ballad with some inspirational moments in there, overall, it’s a nice song. I did like the first ending song "Cyclone" (サイクロン)?) by 12012 and occasionally I did sort of sing the lyrics by myself…….horribly. The second ending song "Good Bye, Yesterday" by Mizrock is decent but I still like the other one better. I’m surprised GONZO did the animation to this series since I have only previously watched another GONZO-made series (Afro Samurai) and I loved that one. The animation looks impressive in the first half of the series while some quality drop, it still held its ground.

FINAL VERDICT: It may have gone through some changes in story, characters, and atmosphere; it did work out for the better and leaving only little and meaningless flaws. This is one of the romantic forms of media that doesn’t come off too cheesy, overrated and only alienates different audiences. I really did like this series for what it was. If Hollywood learns to do an adaptation with different elements thrown in and do it right, they should follow Romeo X Juliet’s example.

Today, the Anime Gods have assisted me into finding anime outside the mainstream and gave me a mission to watch these pieces of work and review it, proving in order to find more anime unknown to you, you have to dig deeper in order to find it and they said if I mess up and blow it, they were going to force me into watching Eiken on a continuous loop and I don’t want to stomach that show again, so today I’m going to explore some of the earlier works of Mamoru Oshii and a 20-minute anime short based on a short story by Kenji Miyazawa.

First up, it’s Angel’s Egg.

As I may already said in my previous entry, this is Mamoru Oshii’s work prior to Ghost in the Shell released in 1985 from Tokuma Shoten, but he had actually had other works he helped with like Gatchaman II, Yatterman, Ippatsu Kanta-kun, & Urusei Yatsura (both the series and the movies).

The plot consists of an unnamed young girl, who is the keeper of a mysterious egg and collects water in jars, then she met a mysterious man and they discuss the world around them.

If you are expecting any character development throughout here, there isn’t much to find. They are more geared as a plot point and even though every character is basically nameless, it doesn’t mean they’re uninteresting. Also, the dialogue is very minimal or none at best, but it means that the movie is more into visual storytelling rather than give exposition just like that and I will say this: the visual imagery shown here is actually spot-on with its dark tone and eerie atmosphere throughout the movie and its music score really does contribute alongside with the surreal symbolism and its outlandish weirdness and I will give kudos to Studio DEEN on the animation.

But……….if you are going to see this movie, don’t see just for entertainment value. This is one of those movies were it should be valued more for its artistic imagery and surrealism rather than just being entertained. It may have a 71 minute runtime, but some parts do tend to drag, especially with some long pauses but sometimes I do like using my brain to detail what is going on in a scene but I was still left wondering, “What did I just watch again?”

FINAL VERDICT: While this can be a confusing clusterf**k to watch sometimes, I can enjoy see myself giving this movie multiple views not just to understand beyond the symbolism throughout the movie but it is actually a decent watch when you’re bored. I would recommend this for people who are looking for anime outside the mainstream.

THE RESTAURANT OF MANY ORDERS

Based on a short story by Kenji Miyazawa, it tells a tale of two British hunters getting lost in the woods and discovers a strange restaurant. Mainly, it is a situation of Man vs. Nature or hunters becoming the hunted.

Like Angel’s Egg, this short doesn’t have any dialogue at all. I’ll admit that no dialogue did bother me a bit, but I was completely OK with that. Sometimes it takes more than dialogue to do any story right. Once again like Angel’s Egg, it has that eerie atmosphere but this time, it doesn’t give away that it’s haunted. Once you enter the restaurant, the realization of it being haunted will come to you sooner or later.

Instead of the typical Japanese look, the animation has borrowed the European pastel style and it did work……at a few times. For me, it can look very lazy at some times but then again it feels like you are inside a storybook….albeit a short storybook.

However, I’m not judging it by its looks. It did have a genuine eerie look but it worked only 50% at the time. But the music did get frightening for a little time but kind of whimsical at some parts.

FINAL VERDICT: For a 20-minute short, it can be a riveting storybook tale with a few spooky moments. However, it wasn’t much of a masterpiece but I never had any high expectations from it. But I would still watch it.

The Anime Gods were somewhat pleased with my reviews and I didn’t suffer the wrath of EIKEN and now I convinced them into reviewing something that I wanted to get into for a long time. It is based on a manga and there has been much talk about a live-action adaptation from a certain director of two of the biggest box-office hits of all time, but no one knows when it’s going to be released. What is this anime that I speak of
?
