I'm not too educated on this subject, but if a carbon-free efficient method is found to produce hydrogen then problem solved apparently, as for now Hydrogen can be produced with electrolysis, powered by a nuclear, solar, or biofueled power plant. Hydrogen isn't no more explosive than normal jet fuel. As a matter of fact a new liquid hydrogen-burning hypersonic airliner is being developed, with the ability to travel around Mach 5!, This particular jet would produce only water vapor and a little nitrous oxide, I can't confirm it but I've seen on youtube a supposed method of producing hydrogen with special pellets that are placed in water and cause Hydrogen gas to bubble up, thus making it useful, I'm not sure how the pellets are produced and whether carbon is a factor in this process.

If you mix hydrogen with oxygen, 60% : 40% the resulting mixture combusts spontaneously and explosively (it only produces water, yes, but it is also exceedingly dangerous - imagine the "pop test" on an industrial scale with pressurised cylinders). The same is not true for other fuels unless (like diesel) they are put under pressure in a motor.

At every stage of the process of changing energy from one form to another there is a loss, so therefore converting electricity to hydrogen fuel is wasteful, no matter how efficient the hydrogen is, using the electricity straight off would be more efficient.

I don't doubt that a hydrogen powered plane is being produced, however let us assume that the energy comes from a biofuel power plant - therefore a 30% reduction in CO2 in the US, the energy is then transferred to a hydrogen compound, resulting in an energy loss, lets say 30%, so you have to use 30% more fuel. This means you produce exactly the same amount of CO2 as using the fuel used to create and process the biofuels straight off.

N.B. Electrolysis is an expensive, energy consuming (consider the voltages used industrially) and material consuming (consider the action at the other electrode).

@ kittAr0: Hydrogen fuel is not the same as the hydrogen bomb - combustion and nuclear reactions are very different processes. By the way, Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, so why do you dare stay alive?

As regards nuclear power; thyroid cancer anyone? or how about radiation poisoning? or early hair loss?

I was just quoting the current methods to make hydrogen, the situation you said is exactly the thing this companies who are involved in this project and other similar ones are trying to solve, their primary purpose is to make high-tech flying eco-friendly, the aviation contributes almost 10 percent of travel related green house gases, they are looking for ways to produce the liquid hydrogen eco friendly, finding a way to efficiently produce a large scale of hydrogen without emitting carbon in the process is the challenge but answers and solutions are being researched and tested

Let's face it you'll never see a electric-powered commercial airliner. As for cars yes but in aviation something like hydrogen or anything else that could substitute jet fuel is far more practical.

fuel cells is a long way to go though... biodiesel turbodiesel whatever is already done for... hydrogen still has a few kinks in it but there are a few cars that are already working with it. solar powered cars arent really being used just yet cause solar power isnt always available... so i think electric car... even though there are already electric cars...

i cant imagine a next fuel after gas.. as said.. every new ways thot r probably expensive and not many ppl wud do it bcuz they care more about money than our environment. even if they did figure out a way.. wud it b affordable?

today's society is so complex...

well when i first heard of the hydrogen gas.. i thot it wud b the next big thing.. but that was when i havent read much into hydrogen gas..

Hydrogen should be the fuel of the future. It is readily available and abundant.

Also people saying hydrogen being too dangerious? It has the similar explosive energy to conventional petroleum so driving with a cell of hydrogen is the same as driving around with a tank of gasoline.

OMFG, you guys aren't reading my posts...

Vegetable oil is turned into biodiesel. (bio)diesel, I believe, is the best temporary replacement.

Electricity isn't very "clean". How do we generate this electricity? Coal power plants. Plug in cars FTL

Solar is very inefficient and extremely expensive.

Wind isn't present all the time. And the direction of the wind sometimes matters.

Hydrogen cars are bombs on wheels......

You obvilously didnt read my post also. Its been shown that hydrogen has similar explosive energy as gas. What is a gas powered car? A rolling molotov cocktail?
