When you see a policeman.....
Posted 8/1/13 , edited 8/1/13
In general they are dangerous, so I keep my distance. Some are abusive and even if they're not, over criminalization has made it so that they can probably find something to charge anybody they don't like with (disorderly conduct is popular if they can not think of anything more serious) some thing and a cooperative prosecutor can find few charges that will stick. Btw over 90% of felony criminal prosecutions end in plea bargains, if that says anything about how stacked against you the deck really is. Harvey Silverglate (cofounder of FIRE) estimates the average American commits three felonies a day. Also when they panic they tend to shoot people, more than few times unarmed people (in too many places it's usually someone in a racial minority).

FYI: Just touching a cop can be felony assault of a police officer.

I hate policemen

Not because I'm a punk, but because I'm one of those people who is terrified by authoritative figures. I feel like they're going to question me for something I've done.

I don't like this feeling. I need more human rights.

(Like if a normal person came up to me and question me, I could ignore them, but if a cop questions me and I ignore them, it gives them a lawful right to interrogate me further) This is what I don't like about them.

I prepare for an identity check... As a male, long hair and a beard seem sufficient to raise suspicion.

The best one was five metres in front of my home door, when I had gotten cigarettes for my mother from the vending machine across the street. They checked my ID and asked if I knew some guy who apparently had broken some other guy's jaw in a bar more than a kilometre away.

What do I do when I see a copper? Depends on the copper, sometimes we'll stop and have a friendly chat and a laugh (if I know the officer in question) else nothing, just carry on about my lawful business.

A couple of years ago my bike broke down on my way home so I sat on it and rode it downhill to a parking spot, a copper was on the other side of the road, he eventually came over and we had a friendly chat, then we went on his way. Police officers are nice if you're not a dick.

I remember when I was 12, and I constantly said stupid shit like this in the hopes that someone will comment on it and say how interesting I am, even though it's blatantly just a load of pointless lies, but I wanted to appear in a certain way which I particularly felt was cool.

And now, i'm disappointed with myself, shitting on people for things I myself did. But y'know, maybe it's a good thing in that I can teach you early that it's frivolous and not worth it loll.

Ummm.... First of all, I'm 13.
2nd of all, I'm being serious, but I guess you wouldn't know serious if it hit you in the face stupid.
If you're gonna be like that, go away.

Oh jeez, that's a classic. Don't feel bad, I've known a bunch of adults on here who still do that shit.

As an ex-cop, I wanna give my input.

Firstly, I became a police officer, genuinely to protect and serve. To stop murders, rapes, etc. With that being said, I've also been the victim of police discrimination because I have several tattoos, I often shave my head because I'm a Buddhist and I wear wife beaters because they are comfortable. I've been apprehended about 3 times and arrested twice, never charged with anything (because I never was breaking the law).

Now when I was a police officer. Let me explain how we perceived the world. Any person we pulled over, could pull a gun out of their window and end our life; leaving behind a family, loved ones and ultimately just senselessly losing your life. I understand why cops become corrupt or jaded, and I don't think it's an excuse.

I've seen grown men beating their toddler children. I've been involved in a suicide by police. I've seen people kill over 100 dollars worth of drugs. I've always seen people simply speeding to get to work a little faster, and as long as it wasn't more than 5 miles over the speed limit and reckless, I didn't feel it was my business. I felt I had better things to do with my time.

There are many different types of police officers with many different types of personalities.

But the one thing that all police officers are suspicious of is when someone bolts merely at the sight of them. When someone begins to act nervous merely at the sight of them. It's simple psychology, folks. If you don't want to have an issue with the police, do not act guilty. If you are not guilty of anything, you have nothing to worry about. Most places are not like the youtube videos you see online. Most cops are NOT looking to plant evidence on you and most cops are not trying to simply "fill" a quota. That would be traffic violations, if you're involved in a traffic violation, good luck to ya and even then it's at the cop's discretion.

Just treat them with respect. They are human beings. Do you realize how many people yelled at me simply because I was wearing a uniform? "Fuck you, pig!". Keep in mind, I am a SUPER benevolent guy. I wish everybody the best and I only wanted to be a cop to help people. I eventually quit being a police officer because I couldn't handle domestic violence calls anymore, I couldn't see abused children and battered women. I almost became a violent police officer and to be a police officer you always have to maintain your composure.

Now, you have SO many rights when it comes to police officers. YOU DO NOT have to identify yourself, you do not have to give them your ID. If you are not being apprehended or arrested, you can freely walk away. If you are not suspect of any crime, they have no power over you. Clarify with the police officer, "Am I being apprehended or arrested?", "Why am I being apprehended or arrested?", and if you're under suspicious, then you have to identify yourself or show ID. Most people don't know their rights with police officers and the sad examples of cops on youtube and other media outlets make it look like they can get away with murder. When I'll tell you one thing, if a cop ever beat up on a kid for no reason, the entire force made sure he got his due.

You are allowed to videotape police officers because they are public servants. They are not allowed to intimidate you or take your camera under the color of authority. EDUCATE yourselves and an encounter with a police officer becomes much less intimidating.

Unless you've done something wrong you have absolutely no reason to worry, run, or hide. Even if you did do something wrong you still shouldn't run because it'll just make everything more complicated. You should* worry about more important things such as your education and just having fun enjoying life.

edit: forgot to add should*

Even if you are telling the truth, there was no need to call the other use stupid, as they were just giving some advice. That is just showing your arrogance, rudeness and cockiness at thirteen and is not making you look good.

I just laugh when a police car pulls at the front and no other drivers attempt to pass over a cop car. To describe it, it's like a kid who was currently discipline by a parent with a belt buckle.
Sure, they speed maniacally when the cops are not around. But, when the cops are present, it's like watching a documentary.

Why would you buy a muscle car when you're going to stop anyway on the next street light? (rhetorical)

I greet them, even a normal security guard / officer.
Things don't get weird and they become more receptive.

A cop is a civilian with a gun that's sworn to "Keep the peace" but they can murder you >_> I've never been taken to jail but i've been handcuffed twice. one because I seemed aggressive? and the other time because I LOOK like someone else.
