It is not hard, just a few rules you have to follow.

1) Whether they are all powerful or the underdog, they cannot be a pussy. They can't whine.

2) In the case of an all powerful character, they have to stick to a personal philosophy and cannot be overly emotional. The less they talk, or the more of a dick they are, the more badass they come off as being.

Akatsuki from Hagure Yuusha
Spike from Cowboy Bebop
Sousuke from Full Metal Panic
Kenpachi from Bleach
Alucard, Anderson, and Walter from Hellsing
Gaara from Naruto

3) In the case of an underdog, they have to NEVER give up, and be willing to win a fight even if it means losing a limb.

Gon from Hunter x Hunter
Yoh from Shaman King
Rock Lee from Naruto

Why Kirito from SAO is not a bad-ass, 1. His resolve wavers, regret is pretty much the basis of his character. 2. He is an all-powerful type of character who meets the badass requirements for an underdog. It's more or less like watching a pro dominate a noob, it doesn't come off as very impressive. The one time when Kirito exhibits bad-assery is in the last episode of SAO with the fight against Sugou, in that one he exhibits underdog badassery. Otherwise he just seems like a showoff.

i feel i could agree with this response the most, thank you sir.

I would say it's easy to make a badass character when they are not THE main character. When they can come and leave as the plot demands they have the opportunity to appear badass. This is probably the reason why MOST main characters can't even be considered badass. An overstayed presence leads to showing emotion (USUALLY).

Stoic characters, characters that are shrouded in mystery, characters that aren't around that much, characters that have power, characters that are feared and or revered, appearing cool, or just having amazing dialogues. There's so many things that make characters appear cool.

I've posted five characters below that are complete badasses.

EDIT: The examples are all anime based.

Sorry, I saw Hitsugaya on the first post... Every time I think of Hitsugaya, it is more about how badly he tends to get jobbed rather than how "badass" he is. >.> Wouldn't Kenpachi or Aizen fit better if we are talking Bleach? Heck, even Ulquiorra or Gin fit better. I see them as freaking no nonsense, usually completely overwhelming forces in their respective shows that never, ever back down at any point. They also tend to have some bloodlust in them, even if they are good guys at the core.

Best Badasses for me are as follows:
Saitou Hajime (Rurouni Kenshin)

Wrath (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Alexander Anderson (Hellsing Ultimate)

I could go on, but these are good enough for now. XD

anime or manga it's the same thing since the author is the same not because i said mangakas it's limited to manga and that's a pretty interesting way to look at the subject

i totally agree on the bleach characters you named being superior to toshiro when it comes to badassness i only posted his picture because he's charismatic and seems to have the majority of the bleach fan base.
P.S: totally agree with you on wrath, he totally skipped my mind but god he's just ferocious and mysterious and completely badass material.

I may just be confusing my favorite character with most bad ass character but i still believe Harima Kenji from School Rumble is the definition of bad ass. Goes all out for his love and dreams but knows when to back down when it mattered.
