I have recently been enjoying editing and uploading these on streaming websites.

What are your thoughts on these?
Do they harm any kind of copyright?
Do you personally watch any?

Please take in consideration that monetization is out of the question, due to the music and nature of the content.

For those interested I posted not long ago a Hunter x Hunter Chimera arc mini amv @ youtube.com/thethreeskorges

I believe the fair use rules allow for this as long as you properly credit the source material, but it has been a while since I read them so you should probably familiarize yourself fully with them.

As for AMVs, it has never been my thing but I don't think they are bad just not my thing, if you like making them and have fun from the creation process then Godspeed.

I like some and hate others based on how they're done really. Considering if one is done right it can lead you to watch a new series that you might not have before, or if its a series you're familiar with it can remind you of the feeling of the anime (certain Ga-Rei Zero amv's have this effect).

Copyright-wise, no clue on legal issues but personally I see nothing wrong with amv's on this basis. You're basically talking about trailers not the full show, and the music is probably already floating around anyway so meh on that end too. I think companies like to throw the copyright flag up a bit too much.

I, as my above comments show, watch a few of them though I'm not a big browser for them.

I guess I can see where companies come from with all the copyright stuff but I think sometimes they can be a good thing as well. I distinctly remember watching a "This is Halloween" amv of Soul Eater and just watching that amv made me want to watch and buy the series. So I think that sometimes they can actually help to advertise animes as well. I remember watching lots of mixed anime amvs with scenes in thinking "oh what anime is that?". So they do help certain animes get more attention too in my opinion.

well i dunno how "legal" they are, even if the sources are credited, but there are some really good ones out there that I thoroughly enjoy and have watched several times.

I love AMVs, I even have an account at animemusicvideos.org -- you could upload your amvs there since they are, most of the time, taken down by YouTube due to copyright issues because of the music.

I used to watch a lot of them before and that's how I became interested in certain animes, I also found very great songs and artists, for example: I came upon an AMV like 8 years ago with an anime and a music artist I've never seen/heard before and I liked both of them. Now, the anime is one of my favorites as well as the artist. (the anime is called Yami no matsuei and the artist is Nightwish). So yeah, AMVs are pretty cool.

I love the older, simpler AMV's which have impeccable timing and actually follow the music's lyrics/timing.

The new ones have a ton of effects but they fall flat for me since they don't usually have depth, or a story, and don't normally fit what their music is saying.
