I think the reason most male harem protagonists are bland and the same is that the creators want to create a connection between the viewer and the protagonist by making them look like an average japanese person with an average personality

as for favorite protagonist

Keima Katsuragi because he's a badass
and
Koyomi Araragi because he looks a lot like me

Pretty much this. The theory (which really makes me wonder) is that the MC in a harem series or visual novel exists, in most cases, as an audience identification character. Therefore, to make them relatable, they tend to be very similar to the target audience, or at least the audience as a teenager (aka, Japanese, average build, average height, dark hair and eyes, etc.). This does vary (Haganai being an obvious example)...personalities, though, generally don't. Characters are generally in one of two camps: either they a) lack ambition, are timid and avoid confrontation, or b) are perverted, lack confidence and are unmotivated. Since, quite honestly, there aren't a lot of teenage boys that can't relate to these personality traits.

Really, the problem I tend to have with harem series is twofold. First, (and this is particularly true of LN and VN adaptations) the MC tends to help all of the girls in his life deal with personal problems or achieve their dreams, but never really grows himself. There are exceptions (the Monogatari series and Pet Girl of Sakurasou, for instance), but usually its like Clannad, where every girl around Tomoya becomes a better person but he is still not really any better for it.

Second, and this is a consequence of marketing, harem series tend to never really resolve themselves. I get the point; see the recent Oreimo discussions online and recognize how many people were upset at "their" girl not getting picked in the end. Visual novels at least have the luxury of letting fans pick the girl they want the MC to get with; TV shows and light novels don't. Still, I would pretty much always rather have a resolution that wasn't my choice than no resolution at all.

Sorry, think I veered a bit off-topic, there.

AK pointed that out earlier in the thread:

so, I've been asking which ones are not Japanese and I've been getting good feedback.

and I think that is why too:

Read the Ai Yori Aoshi, Umi No Misaki, and Rosario+Vampire season 1 and 2 manga or watch the Tenchi and Saber Marionette anime series. Not all harem male leads are so-called "losers". And there's Gintama's lulzworthy Gintoki's harem arc (the anime version is censored in some parts compared to the original manga).

You're welcome. Not to sound "cool", but most people wouldn't know about Kaoru and how different he is. The guy had quite a traumatic past.

Isn't it pretty obvious that the common black haired, black eyes protag is mass-produced to project the audience into the show so they can relate and pitifully imagine themselves being clenched between breasts. Also kind of like games adapted into shows. Generally their personality is weak so that they don't get in the way of the actual characters to be explored since they are, in fact, you and giving a separate personality to your hologram doesn't really help the illusion. I can't remember any impacting male harem protags much less memorable harems.

I'm starting to wonder if they have dark features because dark features are actually commonly considered "strong" or "masculine" in the sense. like the idea of the ideal male, how's the saying, "tall, dark, and handsome." most of the Male Harem Protagonists do come off as pitiful, etc. but in reality they are wielding tremendous power and have to face impossible odds(w/the help of the girls ;D).

just an after thought! ^^
