It's picking up again with episode 4. These new characters appearing helps add that sense of confusion and feeling that you're not being told the whole story that I love about this series. I had a bit of trouble really getting into this season with the first couple episodes, but now it's grabbing me again.

Yes, as I've written before it is borderline insanity that they haven't animated Kizu yet but they're doing the second season... hello, here is a character you haven't seen before. And here are some events you don't know anything about. Have fun!

Nisio Isin is the master at wordplay. I loved the way he turned Hanekawa's saying inside-out and then back against her.

I also appreciated the "averting your eyes" vs "running away" subject that was talked about. Since I see a lot of myself in Hanekawa I'm kind of happy that there continue to be new perspectives on the nature of her problems and how to deal with them.

It wasn't cool man, wasn't cool at all. I mean they give enough hints that, "oh the dude is a vampire hunter who is half vampire and so probably did something to Araragi/Shinobu a while back and Hanekawa got involved somehow" but I need more details than that yo! I didn't ask for a cliff notes of it.

And I forgot to mention in my previous post, the biggest thing to happen in ep 4 imo

Holy crap I never thought we'd actually see Araragi's mom

I guess they are trying to create even more demand for Kizumonogatari somehow, as if it needs more! If anything can possibly challenge Evangelion in the anime box office it might be Kizumonogatari!

As for Araragi's mom, I laughed because Shaft even gave her a head tilt LOL!

But are ahoge's inherited or environmental? If you remember from Nisemonogatari (Fake story), Tsuhiki Phoenix is...

Are you implying that ahoges are from apparitions? Because that would be the strangest thing ever.

No, just that, do I need to spoiler Nisemonogatari here?

Just thought I'd like to redirect the discussion back to the second season, as that is the topic of the thread.

Regarding the appearance of Episode, it's pretty much a habit for most Japanese authors to introduce events in an omnibus format. Regardless of whether or not we know who or what Episode is, the point is made clear when Tsubasa hints at the historical connection she has with him. We may not know exactly what it is, but it comes off as an added bonus for those who were able to make the connection with Kizumonogatari. Otherwise, the real importance of his appearance is discovered by Tsubasa later in the same episode. With that, it has come to a point that most dialogues are done with a purpose, as is always the style of NishiOisihN, and I respect him for that.

To be honest, I haven't read the novels, but I watch the show with the subtitles off. I do this primarily because there are a lot of subtleties in the dialogue that end up getting lost in translation. Like in episode 4, the expression used for "envy" is actually yakimochi wo yaku, which literally means "to roast a rice cake [that is already roasted]".

Sadly, the best way to enjoy the series is to embrace it in the original Japanese language. Regardless, you can still enjoy it in its translated form, but yeah... slightly different.

EDIT: I was curious and went to check how the subs translated that part on Hitagi figuring out the meaning behind the name "kako" used for the Tiger. Suffice it to say that it was both confusing and inaccurate. D: The portmanteau has nothing to do with a horse! Also, it was a very delicate issue to directly translate Hitagi's mention of interpreting the name "kako" as past and associated with "trauma" to bring about the idea as closer to "fires" (relating to the string of events that lead them to that). Again, there's only so much you can do when you translate things into English, and I know we can't expect subtitlers to flood the screen with T/L notes (which they won't). Otherwise, it's up to us to do our own homework.

Indeed, this series is best enjoyed in Japanese and even best enjoyed, really, in book form. The puns are much easier to understand in kanji than spoken or in the old katakana versions Shaft likes to use in the still flashes.

Separate topic but I found it very funny that Hanekawa Tsubasa has her own magazine...

OK, they make it look like she has a Tsubasa family magazine. Really it is a 48 page picture and text book but I like the magazine style cover.

I had to drop this one which is kind of bumming me out. I can't keep up with at the rapid fire scene changes, and this anime is one of those that you kind of have to lose yourself in the dreamlike feeling of (which might sound weird, but that's how it seems to me) to really enjoy. I can't really appreciate the dreamlike qualities if I have to hit the pause button every 2 seconds just to keep up with the subs.

I hate to say it, but this is one anime that I really need dubbed.
