it's because of the genre that you can make comparisons on similar grounds. if you just go by that criteria then it's based on personal preferences.

imo it shouldn't matter as long as you enjoy it and think it's good

I expect One Piece to land @ number 1 when it's over.
Not that it's ever happening though, as One Piece will NEVER end.

MAL is just a popularity contest. So while it will tell you what everyone likes it won't always tell you what's good.

Pretentious? Yep but I, being the syncretic seeker I am, will not just rely on MAL when judging how good a show is. I take the time to scour ANN and other review sites like THEMAnime and Nihon Review to find out whether or not a show is worth my time.

Life is too short for bad anime.

MAL gives me a headache. I only use it to keep track of my anime. Other than that, I find it to be a bunch of wanking and epeen. Plus the rating system blows. I'm more of a 5 star type of gal. I don't need a bunch of dribble over "good, fair, poor, decent, excellent, masterpiece, blah blah blah". I don't even show my ratings because people take this crap so personally. You gave SAO a 4? HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE WHAT I LIKE I AM PERSONALLY AND DEEPLY OFFENDED.

Go away.

All 3 TV series inside the top 10.
LEGEND.

Haha, yeah, the characters were too overly eccentric for me, that when serious stuff happened, I couldn't take it seriously, lol. And I tried. I struggled thru the first 11 eps before I threw in the towel. I'm sure it gets better the longer the series goes, but if the characters still act as goofy as I suspect they probably do, I already know I won't be able to take the drama seriously, lol.

Lol, I'm still struggling at episode 150 and waiting for Gintama to get better. Gintama2's first two episodes were awesome, but the first series' best part is still a toilet without paper. The 150 episodes that I've watched have mediocre written all over it. Few extremely funny scenes and some action once per season don't make up for all those episodes that were just still-images with talking and that recapping. Gintama imho doesn't deserve its score, even if the ending is so great that people are forced to give it a 10.

But yeah, there're so many users behind the MAL's scoring system that it's probably the most reliable source to find great anime. Yet I don't think you can say that #6 is automatically better than #7, because those two might not be suitable for comparing. Liking things is subjective and therefore there's bound to be few series you can't stand being in top 30.

Those who find the top anime list a joke can't probably acknowledge other opinions than their own.

I honestly don't even look at the MAL popularity/rating systems because I really don't care. People can whine all they want about their favorite anime not being in the top 10 or top 20, but it doesn't diminish how good it is. Some of my favorite anime are towards the bottom. Just because Hunter x Hunter (2011) (#27) is ranked lower than FMA: Brotherhood (#1) doesn't mean that it's worse, it just means more people watch and prefer FMA:Brotherhood. So yeah, overall I don't take it seriously and neither should anyone else. I just use MAL to keep track of my anime and manga and that's all.

The first season of Gintama is rough because they didn't have a good animation budget. I can guarantee you though that the animation does get better in the last 2-3 seasons (probably where you're at). Since when do long-running Shounen anime start off with amazing animation? Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc all had rough beginnings, so it's understandable that the first few seasons are going to be cheaply made. But seriously, the only funny scenes you can think of is the toilet paper scene? Maybe I just have a different sense of humor but I was laughing my ass off at every other episode.

In the last two seasons (Gintama'/Gintama Enchousen), the serious arcs are much more dramatic and serious than anything you've seen yet. There will be comedy arcs as well, and there will always be comedy during serious arcs, but that's what Gintama's charm is. They don't want you to take them seriously (for the most part). The serious arcs in the most recent seasons are very well done and animated nicely. I don't often tear up, but I did during a few of those arcs.

Although i use MaL to find animes, i don´t pick them based on score. I usually look at name of anime, plot, categories and then check out some reviews. If they have valid arguements as to why its good i might watch it.

This though.
It deserves a 7 at most.

I must admit I shared the same reaction when I saw Fairy Tail's rating/score.
