I was bored and got in a random debate with my friend. Now, people can get mechanical body parts or synthetic organs and such but even so are still considered human even though they are part machine or some, majority machine. Now, sometime whether its in 10 years or 100 years, there will most likely be animal/human hybrids. So he was saying "if they are animal hybrids then they aren't really human." So I brought up the part saying "Then people with mechanical replacements wouldn't be human by that standard." then I asked him, "At what point do we cease to be human? What defines human? Our body? Our soul? Our mind?" This isn't a question to start a religious war on the forum and crap, just be open about what you believe and accept what others believe and we'll all be happy.

We can synthetically grown lungs and such in other animals like sheep. So what if someday, we can grow a brain synthetically? Once we've grown a brain then we can practically create a human from other synthetic parts not born of another human. Would that "person" created from machines or other synthetically created parts and not "born" from a human still be considered human? Would he/she still have a soul? I'd like to think that it would, but my mind always races when I think about stuff like this so I can never truly come to a conclusion without blocking myself :S

When you lose the sympathy to care for others, is when I feel you aren't human.

I think what makes someone or something human is its soul. so I feel that you cease to be human without your soul...but isn't that impossible, to be alive yet soulless?? hmm....but I have seen an android before....theyre really creepy robots that look and act just like humans...look it up on youtube its freaky.

I'd say your human so long as you have the capabilities to care for and show emotions towards others; granted there may be some exceptions but just for the most part that's what I think

I suppose we would have to wait till we are able to actually create a human from nothing just put it together from all grown stuff.
Once we can do that we would get closer to your question since we could finally answer the question about a soul.
If the all grown person would be able to life and be like everyone else we could assume that there is no such thing as a soul and therefore our definition of human has to be solely made on the body parts.
So if that would be the case than the hybrids you mentioned would not be human and heavily cybered persons would also not fit the definition of a human anymore.
I suppose replacement body parts for damaged parts could be called a damaged human.

Should the all grown human turn out to be just an empty shell we could assume that its lacking a soul in which case we could define being human as having a soul.

Please note that i am not talking about cloning since we do not have any concept of what a soul might be we do not know if we could get one by cloning a living being

Hybrids eh? Well, in terms of species, if any animal strays enough from its parents' chromosomal pool, it loses the ability to reproduce with them. To do that as an individual would mean being the last of your kind, to do it as a small group is exactly how speciation occurs. (Speciation is the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise). So, the hybrid wouldn't be human, in terms of species, but if it still has the same mental faculties, it would be just as sentient, which means chatting, working, or playing games with it would be little different from doing so with anyone else. Whatever the hybrid turns out to be, if it's sentient, it would still be a person, just not a human one. Blending with machines however would do nothing to the chromosomal makeup of one's eggs, or sperm, so you'd still be fully classed as part of the same original genus.

As for the soul... It's real. Just like unicorns and leprechauns.
