Personally, I think Elfen Lied may be the greatest thing I've read in my life. It makes me laugh my ass off at the antics of Nyu and Nana, I cried my eyes out at least 5 times during and had to stop reading for a few minutes, and it's an absolutely heart-warming story.

I've always wanted this to be licensed in English but it's been 8 years now..

I know dozens of people who have seen the anime but didn't read the manga, and honestly I think that's criminal. The anime doesn't even compare. I was so busy yelling "That never happened!" or "WHERE'S ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS?!" that I couldn't enjoy it as much as if I had watched it before reading.

This manga actually made me cry more than Clannad After Story did, and remains the most gut-wrenching pain I've felt from any format of media.

My top 4 scenes from the manga would have to be:

Sorry for the long-winded explanations, but I seriously adore this manga, and I would recommend it to anyone on earth. If you'd like to keep this thread going, I'd love to hear your thoughts on your favourite parts, characters, or scenes, or even whatever criticisms you may have to offer.

I think the ending in the manga had a bigger impact than the anime.
It made me cry.

I loved the manga, sadly the anime for elven lied missed the best parts in the manga, but i read it all in one sitting and i must say it was an emotional rollercoster the whole way, regardless i really enjoyed it ~!

I prefer the manga over the anime.

Overall I thought the manga was pretty good. Pretty crazy at times.

The manga is incredible, the anime doesn't do it justice (even though the anime has a respectable following). I've always wished that it would get a re-boot anime now that the manga is done and they could give it the proper treatment but it might probably never happen.

The manga was great. The anime wasn't bad, but paled in comparison.

Bandoh was my favorite character. He got such much depth in the manga, whereas the anime just made him comedy relief I guess.

His relationship with Mayu & Nana and Kurama was nice. I loved their little group.

Have to be honest, I think both the anime and manga are highly over rated.

Personally I liked both, but the manga was much more fleshed out than the anime. Although some of the ecchiness went overboard at times.

the anime was made before the manga was finished so they had to make their own ending.

Too bad they didn't make it long running, and go with the manga, like Naruto & Bleach do.

Because the manga was very short, compared to Shounen Manga.

I read most of it in one sitting, it was an alright manga. A lot of situations that I didn't favor for individual characters if not the whole cast, I also feel those 'situations' weren't justified with reason making it more frustrating than enjoyable.

I liked what Elfen Lied tried to do but wasn't satisfied, I wouldn't recommend the manga even though the anime isn't much better since it's so crammed and missing so much.

Though I am torn since I like to remember Elfen Lied as one of those "great" works from my childhood.
That's my take on all of it anyway to sum it up.

I love the anime, but to be honest the manga had the better story line and some changes did take some of its original charm out of it. The problems I had with the manga though were Okamoto's weird art style at the beginning and the exceeded amounts of fan service with lots of male gaze scenes. Despite that, it stays one of most heart breaking tales I've ever read.

It is still my favorite completed manga to date. I adore Lynn Okomoto, now. It sucks how the anime was extremely lackluster in comparison. and i mean, EXTREMELY! But I do not know all the details of the release date and circumstances, so it was probably just another anime made of a currently ongoing manga. Claymore and Berserk are other examples of how lacking the animation is in comparison to the manga. But then again, none of these are PG 13. The majestically crafted brutality of mankind is not something that can easily be animated and aired for people to enjoy. >.>
