**If this thread or anything similar has already been made, please lock!**

I was inspired by my research on Neon Genesis Evangelion and the themes and psychological impact behind it.
I've still yet to finish without spoiling myself!

Anyway,
When I was a lot younger, I used to watch anime just for a source of entertainment. I never really paid attention to specific scenes and details, and my heart was more focused on the beauty of the animation, characters and music. Although I still look for those traits in animes I watch right now, as my mind and curiosity expanded I grew more into plots, themes, and subliminal messages etc.
I've watched some crazy psychologically impacting shows, and I want to get my hands on several more.
(please recommend!)

What do you specifically look for? Do share!

**By the way by psychologically impacting, I don't mean traumatizing. [Elfen Lied, Higurashi etc..]**

Entertainment. "LAWL"

At the end of the day, I just want to enjoy something that will temporarily make me forget about the mundane day. Of course there are some overlapping things like some psychological mindfuck, but honestly, that relieve with a maybe thought provoking issue that's probably an improbably scenario is what I'm there for.

Hmm, well it's like any form of storytelling really. It all books down to what the writers want you to think about, or what the director wants you to see, or how the composer wants you to feel.

You have Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 come out and tell a good story but wanted you to see how life would be after a big disaster. Then of course 3.11 happened and the rest is history.

The Ghost in the Shell series always had a overlaying theme of vanity, acceptance and taboos.

Earth Defence Family is an action show through and through but examines and trails of the modern Japanese family, especially those in a broken home.

That's really all I can think of at the moment. I'm more of a shounen junkie. Give me power levels and ki blasts all day. Mainly because their stories don't insist upon themselves.

Sounds like you need a heavy dose of Psycho-Pass on the double...

You'll thank me later.

Yes

I am of the firm belief that anime can be artful and profound in addition to being entertaining.

Lucky Star makes interesting cultural and philosophical claims on ethics, social norms, epistemology, and ideals.
Naruto is a rather inefficient thesis on justice and the nature of friendship.
K-On! gives insight on the nature of popularity vs. content in anime.

If you want, anything can be "more than entertainment" -- I've found the local Wal-Mart to contain knowledge of heavy sociocultural import. Alternatively, I could also say that I find looking at these sorts of things entertaining, and it's one of the reasons I watch anime, in which case anime really is "only entertainment to me."

What do I look for in an anime? Interesting dialogue and character depth. Most other things are pretty negotiable. Tsunderes are not required, but absolutely definitely vastly increase my attention span (probably). Really though, I don't really "look" for anything. I can only find what's there, which means that looking for something without knowing whether it will be there is a bit of a waste when I can find something valuable that's there without looking for it. Things aren't entertaining of themselves -- people add that attribute. Which means that, basically, what you find entertaining is a matter of what you want to find entertaining. I found Total Eclipse to be among the most disappointing anime I've seen, but looking at exactly why I feel it's such a piece of shit is a matter of great interest to me. I'm entertained because I want to be entertained.

Why's that?

I'd recommend Texhnolyze and Serial Experiments Lain, but that's just me. Well, really, almost any cyberpunk show - for sure.

Ultimately, I'm still looking for entertainment; it's just that my idea of entertainment was different from when I was younger.

When I was younger, anything can entertain me easily, nowadays I need something deep, subtle and unique (something I haven't seen before).

I guess I just didn't find it "psychologically impacting" as I thought I would. Other than that, nothing really.

You can find deeper meaning on strip clubs. Dat ass clapping can be words of wisdom, just in sweaty morse code.

Back on topic though I actually remember, my favorite anime is all about that deeper meaning. It not only focuses on the war we will wage someday in the name of water, but also deals with rape, turning the other cheek(no pun intended), and just how to cope when life gives you lemons.

That anime is Now and Then, Here and There
