I've watched a lot of anime, and I've realized that most of the male never grow facial hair or have to shave, especially in Slice of Life anime. So, is facial hair looked down upon in Japanese Society, or is it that beards are just tough to design, or is it that Japanese men don't really have a lot of facial hair?

It's not looked down, it's that the majority prefer flower boys. Plus most Asians in general don't grow a lot of facial hair.

the only time i ever really notice facial hair showing up in anime or manga is when its a mature fully grown man or when its a really really really old man lol but now that you mention it you never really see teenagers drawn in anime or manga with facial hair. i assume the main reason is maybe the dress code of schools over there requires you to be clean shaven perhaps? :/ even when you do see men with facial hair its normally just a goatee never a full on beard. wonder what they would do if the men of duck dynasty ever showed up in japan :p lol

I think that maybe Japanese guys just aren't as hairy as the guys you know, especially as teenagers. Also, it's anime, so they leave stuff out. It's not like you see the girls shaving their armpits in anime either.

In my birth country, we consider facial hair as a bad thing; men with facial hair is perceived as someone who is like a thug or criminal. (When I say "we" I don't mean 100% of people over there think like this, I mean the general conformists and standards in that particular country).

Teachers or doctors (over there) generally do not have facial hair until they are around 50 years old or over.

In Western Society, it is a lot more acceptable for men to have (groomed) facial hair... even in a profession such as teachers or doctors...

I find this contrast rather interesting.

I'm assuming over in Japan, it's probably the same thing, they probably perceive facial hair on men as equivalent to someone who's in the Yakuza or something like that.

Lol, I thought that they just didn't grow facial hair. Like it wasn't in their genetics or something. I can't recall ever meeting an Asian male with facial hair. Their skin is so smooth looking.

Now that I think about it you don't see it appear much in anime, especially on younger boys. I recall Harima from School Rumble having facial hair, but as far as young guys go that's it.

younger guys (35ish below) tend to be clean shaven, (though some might have a goatee, or some pretty groomed facial hair, generally not beards for sure)

33+ may have facial hair more often

and.. maybe 50+ it's a even more likely.

But the majority do usually shave.. it's more a grooming thing than not being able to.. and employers tend to like/prefer clean shaven guys.

I get the feeling that Japanese...And Easte-Asian society (and some other Asians) prefer the pretty boy look.

A look which I dislike a lot, mind you. I like my men manly

I have seen some anime where the "older brother" or that 20-30 year old hot shot drunk has a goatee but I would think that that japanese value a clean and honorable image and that would be why it is more than likely culturally accepted to keep clean.

It's probably because a large majority of anime male characters are pre-teens. Adult characters don't really have the potential to grow facial hair for some odd reason 0_0
