not trying to bag on naruto, but seriously. naruto shouldnt be 364 + 220(original) eps long.
i remember reading naruto on my friend's shonen jump he brought to elementary school everyday.
and remember watching the first episode in 2002 on Toonami
im going to college now ffs.

ps. naruto blows dbz's stereotype for fillers out of the ball park.

i feel really sorry Studio Pierrot's artists who had to draw naruto for 12 years!!!

edit: END THE SERIES AND GIVE NARUTO FANS SOME FKING CLOSURE!

Naruto prob won't end until Holiday 2014 or early 2015 in my opinion, unless Kishi drags the storyline even further, which he prob will lool, just like Kubo is doing, and even Oda with his uber slow pacing of course

No offense to Bleach fans, but I really think Kubo should retire that since no anime anymore. And it's pretty much Naruto and the Titans selling like hot cakes nowadays

I think Kishimoto will try and overtake Dragon Ball in overall sales. He's at something 120 million+ in sales versus DB's 157 million. If every manga sold sells a million and he releases the usual 3-4 a year it'll take him another 10 years to make up the gap.

Regardless Naruto won't overtake Dragon Ball overall, cause worldwide its got 230 million in total, and even if it does the cultural impact of Dragon Ball in Japan overshadows Naruto anyday, Naruto's sales didn't have any booms it just grew slowly overtime when cooler parts of the manga happened through the years

This very long winded video explained how Dragon Ball & One Piece became cultural icon comics in Japan, meaning those mangas represent the Japanese culture as a whole and everyone in the population enjoys them for the most part, u can just listen to the first 10 minutes or so if u have time

I believe what happened with the 3 comics, based on logic and the quality of each of the series from what I've seen of all three

Dragon Ball boomed in like 1980s-1990s range, because its DBZ etc, and it released in a time where Television was at its strongest and not many manga i think like the Big 3 were around to compete with the series at the time

Naruto had Part 1, and just slowly grew in sales through the years, small peaks in popularity through the years but no DBZ level booms or anything, just a slow growth in sales

And One Piece as mentioned in the video started off slow of course, then had a boom in the Alabasta Arc, but fans dropped off in Skypeia after prejudging the series only to soon realize One Piece's best arcs like Water 7 were coming up, and then Marineford blew up in collaboration with Strong Worlds Movie release in threatres causing One Piece to overtake Dragon Ball in sales,

So One Piece had more of waves of popularity it seems b4 it became the top selling manga, Dragon Ball was more of a clean slate, and Naruto just grew overtime

I honestly also think Hunter could have entered the 100 million mark by now, if Togashi wasn't playing so much Dragon Quest through the years lool and just kept writing the series in Jump every week like the rest, it rlly says something if his manga is in the Top 10 each year while he was still on Hiatus for 2 years lool

Kids will down pretty much anything put in front of them. One Piece remained cool for older people with good product placement. Endorsing things like clothing and perfume. Things anyone can use daily. So it's a pop culture icon now, like you said. Nobody is going to walk around with a forehead protector. Plus even though there is a clear story, Oda gets so sidetracked so often its easy for people to just jump back onto the series even after leaving it alone for a while.

As for popularity, HxH averages over 2 million sales over 32 volumes. Thats higher than Naruto.

I love Hunter waay more than Naruto but I think based on Popularity polls I've seen on a bunch of diff sources Naruto ranks higher on most list, but I only think this is the case because of Togashi's inconsistency's and breaks through the years, If we had the 2011 version earlier rather than the incomplete original, and Togashi wasn't so lazy lol then I think Hunter prob would have higher sales than Naruto or at the very least prob the same range of sales

Fairy Tail is another one of those series that seems to have found a more passionate fanbase outside of Japan. Like Bleach. If Magi ever aired on US TV I think it would be a even bigger hit.

The big difference in my opinion is that from what I've seen of Magi, its a pretty good show, but I've yet to make the time to see the entirety yet, but I've heard great things about it. Fairy Tail I'd say is ok-decent-good range, not amazing or anything just an average fun show not to take to seriously

and Bleach is just bad lol I don't ever mind bashing it, the story is just non existent with the mindless action, perfect anime for us Americans unfortunately, Kubo's such a freaking troll lol, I am one who enjoyed the first Soul Society arc, and the Arrancar parts, but those moments aren't enough for the entire series as a whole, for instance I heard Fullbringer was pretty bad
