The definition of art depends on various people. I call it art. I believe this is called negative-and-positive art or pop art. I wouldnt buy it though.

If someone wants to call that art, they can. Just, please don't spend my taxpayer money to get that put up in city hall.

I think art is entirely subjective. Art to me is not necessarily art to you. Just because some pieces are agreed upon by the majority as 'art' does not make them art.

Not all paintings are art, just like not all films, songs, or books are art.

It all depends on who is looking at it and how they feel.

That being said, I stared for like 10 minutes and I never saw the secret picture. I think its broken.

It doesn't have to be good to be art.

Find the area of the shaded region, if is a square and its side is 5 cm. I would not pay for that.

My response copy-pasted from another thread (I didn't feel like writing it again):

Many people consider arts and sciences as separate irreconcilable ideas, but really, both exist to help us understand truth. While science deals with things that are known and readily comprehensible to us, art helps us make sense of things that are incomprehensible or otherwise inexpressible to us. Often, emotion and feeling is considered one of the most inexpressible things we can deal with, and it's something that is often very difficult to understand, which is why so much art deals with that. However, art can deal with anything that is inherently beyond our ability to understand it.

As someone that likes to study math, it frequently astounds me that mathematicians can write proofs and use reason to think about things like the concept of infinity. We, as humans, are fundamentally incapable of grasping the concept of infinity, and yet we can quite easily work with the concept, and understand it more and more. In that sense, many mathematical proofs qualify as art, because they proceed to reveal things that are nearly incomprehensible to us otherwise. That, in a nutshell, is how I think of art -- it makes sense of the incomprehensible.

As for the question on that particular "piece of art," I wouldn't pay for it, because it doesn't have much value to me as art. It doesn't reveal anything that is otherwise inexpressible to me, and in that sense, it's not art to me. Whether it's due to experience, observational skills, or some other reason -- someone else may be able to see or comprehend something about the picture that reveals some sort of truth to them, and in that case, it qualifies as art. But because I'm lacking the ability to learn from it, it's not art.

I actually really like this. At first, I thought it was a cool little mental exercise: some of the circles are 'solid' whereas others are just empty space in between those. Where there are no solid circles, or the solid circles overlap, it's white, and where there's only one solid circle, it's black. It's pretty interesting to look at it and figure out which ones are solid and which ones are empty. Until of course you figure out that it doesn't actually work like that and the black fill is fairly randomly applied. Still, the way I went into it, it was a nice chance to flex my brain muscles a little bit, and I'm certainly not going to condemn something that offers me that, even if it's just an illusion. The act of trying to figure it out is worth it, even if in the end, there's nothing to figure out.

Conclusion: Yeah, I'd consider this art. If there was some sort of pattern to it, I might even consider buying it, but only for a price that makes sense: if I wanted to, I could just print it or something, so I wouldn't pay more than a couple bucks.

Also, forgot to ask, is this piece titled? Because, if the title is along the lines of "circles with parts filled in with ms paint" I'm going to go ahead and make a guess that it was meant more as practice with ms paint than as art (although it could still be art as I've defined it).

I guess you could call it art, but it's not worth anything. Kind of like how fanfiction is still considered writing, but usually not worth much of an afterthought.

I'm not hating on fanfiction. If doing something makes you happy, I say do it...as long as you're not hurting someone in the process. I just personally do not really care for fanfic.

I call it "circles".
