OP, I kinda know where you are coming from. I don't see the appeal of tsunderes. I'm not really a fan of them by default (I can like some tsundere characters, but that a character is tsundere doesn't draw me to them). I don't see why Japanese otaku love them (or western anime fans, for that matter). It is just like how I am not a lolicon, so I kinda shake my head at the Japanese otaku that just LOVE loli characters (which is like, most of them).

It is funny how most tsunderes in anime are young girls with a bitchy facade but a golden center. Most girls in real life who have a golden center have a sweet shell as well, however the opposite is not always true. On the other hand most real life tsundere's I have met, and I am kind of one myself, are actually grown men. You know the type, slightly anti-sociable with a grumpy exterior but once you get them interested in something they become very nice to talk to.

As far as anime tsunderes go though, I hate the majority of them as well. Most of the time their tsun is unjustified and they are just bitches. I'd say about 20-30% Tsun to about 70-80% dere is where I like it. Characters like that would be Hattori Junko from Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maou, Laura from IS , although she is kind of yandere too, Chidori from Full Metal Panic, the main character of Kaichou wa Maid-sama, forgot her name Aizawa something, been a while since I read it. For the most part girls who have good reasons to be angry with the main character and are not just taking out their frustration or hiding their feelings. Junko was tsun because she actually though Akuto was evil, when he convinced her otherwise she was extremely dere, Laura thought Ichika was weak and made his sister (her idol) weak so she hated him, when he proved her wrong she fell in love with him, Chidori beats up Sousuke because he tries to solve everyday problems with dangerous methods, she is punishing him for being a dufus. I like those types of tsunderes, they are smart reasonable girls.

The other tsunderes, pretty much 99% of the tsunderes voiced by Kugimiya Rie or Taketatsu Ayana annoy me to no end. Taiga, Louise, Shana, and Aria I absolutely hate, I am cool with Nagi though. From Taketatsu I can only think of Kirino off the top of my head, I absolutely hate Kirino though. Ayumi from TWGOK really doesn't seem all that tsundere to me at all, and Kotori from Date Alive I actually have respect for, she is tsundere for a reason which she is fully aware of (She is hiding her weak self so she can accomplish her mission.) Come to think of it, a lot of Taketatsu's characters aren't all that tsun. I guess Kirino was so much of a bitch I accidently associated that quality with Taketatsu's voice.

I have to admit, I have one guilty pleasure when it comes to tsundere. I should hate her based on how she acts, but I can't help but love her, and that is Misaka from Index.

Does this make me a tsundere too? :O But anyway, I don't mind tsunderes, honestly it can get frustrating at times, but sometimes it's worth it all in the end, and some animes wouldn't be the same without their tsundere characters.

I agree sometimes. When Tsunderes have too much tsun they just really irritate me, but when they're done right I like them a bit (like Taiga from Toradora IMO).

On the other hand, I almost always prefer the other 3 deres, so I can understand what you're saying.

Alright, I will confess; I do enjoy SOME tsunderes. A commonly mentioned one I enjoy is Taiga from Toradora. Usually though, the character has to grow on me, and grow on me really damn well at that.

Also, yandere is the truest from of love. I may be alone here, but I feel anime needs more 'slit your throat with a jagged piece of broken glass so we can be together forever' crazy. And yanderes get shit done.

So yeah. I like some characters who are tsundere, but not tsundere as a whole.

P.S. If you only watched the show, then yeah, you'll hate Asuna, but she is much better in the novels.

Man, FUCK stupid characters. Its like trying to watch a geriatrics ward try to complete a labyrinth. You know what they should be doing and yell it at them, but they can't hear you and proceed to just shit on themselves in ignorant bliss.

And they are all Mary Sues.

Yeah........... That is the best sign of love right there............ potentially homicidal (if they already are not homicidal) and being a stalker...... Screw that shit. <.<

Yeah, I know what you meant. It is just... most Yandere's just creep me the hell out. I just can't get behind them. There are a couple I like, but for the most part, I just can't... <.<' Future Diary is on my to watch list, but I have heard so interesting things about her character, so we shall see. XD

A little more detail on my views in general though. While I do tend to be drawn to Tsundere's more than any other dere (quite a few of my favorites are tsundere's.) It is only when they have actual depth to them and it is understandable WHY they are the way they are. Taiga from Toradora! is a perfect example of it being done right just because of the fact that her family situation is AWFUL. It results in her acting out violently to try and protect herself. She isn't even THAT abusive to Ryuji like some of the more... humor based Tsundere's can be. She just has trouble admitting things to herself and puts up a front so she doesn't get hurt. Also, trying to make sure everyone else was happy over herself has something to do with it I am sure. The further the series goes on, the less cold she is. It is just her whacked out personality from unfortunate events that happen to her that makes her a little more awkward towards people. :/

Other good examples would be Victoroque from Gosick and Rin from Fate/Stay Night. These two are awesome in all aspects, really. Both are similar in that they are not ever physically abusive, they just tend to be brutally honest with the respective characters in their series. The only thing they are not honest with is their own feelings, but those are also easy to explain. Victorique barely understands concepts like love, and was raised in complete isolation, so she has trouble interacting with ANY people and is of course more awkward around the one person she can trust. Then you have poor Tohsaka Rin from the Fate series. Her family situation is pretty damn atrocious and she had MASSIVE amounts of responsibility thrown on her when she was not even eight years old. She doesn't like people getting too close to her so she is more distant to everyone around her. She just has a gruff personality is all, which should be fine. There is nothing wrong with being critical and easily frustrated with things! XD Also, Shirou deserves a lot of the criticisms thrown at him... <.<

What all three of these characters have in common is that they all have a personality outside of being a Tsundere and all three of them grow as people in each series. I think the bigger issue with ANY type of character archtype is when they have no good reason to be that way at all, fail to escape the achtype in any real successful way, or only have that as a defining characteristic....... So about 90% of them in most harem based series. <.<'

And therein lies the problem; most of them are terrible. I haven't seen Fate/Stay Night (heard its terrible), but I agree that Tiaga and Victorique are awesome. My problem is that if a tsundere character isn't great, they are horrible. Like, claw your eyes out with a pair of safety scissors horrible.

Wait, does Shizuku from My Little Monster count as tsundere? Cause I didn't hate her entirely (in-as-much as I didn't hate the rest of the main characters for flip-flopping more than a right-wing politician).

Fate/ Stay NIght isn't terrible in a traditional sense. I found it enjoyable. The characters keep it going... Shirou can be obnoxious at times, though... <.< It is a rough translation from the Visual Novel (which is pretty damn awesome.)

Hmm. I guess in a technical sense? But to me she seems more like just an independent character that has no time for nonsense. Especially since Yoshida is... well... Yoshida. XD

As for when they are done terribly, that probably has to do with the fact that all characters in most harem series aren't characters at all. I hate that genre so much... XD

I never got into the Monogatari series. I watched like the first 3 episodes of Bakemonogatari and just didn't care for it. Maybe I just don't know art.
