I'm not quite sure if I fit in the 'josai' or 'shoujo' demographic anymore... but I don't fit the mold for either, I don't specifically watch anime aimed at girls.

You are still considered a shoujo 10-18 year old girls fit that category but that doesn't mean you can't read josei meant for women 19- or shounen (which really means small years for boys or girls but now means boys 10-18) or seinen for men. If you enjoy it, then enjoy it!

I'm not even sure the publishers are sure anymore. The lines between shoujo and josei are getting quite blurry in Dessert and BE LOVE at Kodansha. They even have furigana in BE LOVE and for the longest time that was the biggest difference, the expectation was that 10-18 year olds didn't know all the kanji yet so shounen and shoujo comics had furigana while josei and seinen did not but with josei at least, Chihayafuru is full furigana so it really seems like it is intended more for shoujo readers. If you read them translated you wouldn't notice the difference.

There are nipples drawn in some shounen comics so apparently full topless pictures are fine for 10 year old boys in Japan... Shounen can be quite gory too. Some seinen stuff is much worse obviously to the point of being too much, there are titles in Bunch magazine (that I read mostly for BTOOOM!) that I have to skip, just too weird... even I say wtf Japan some days.

Definitely not...
I have favourite animes that's made for female, male, young or old.

My favourite animes are all over the place in terms of genre. I can't get it to fit into one genre.

I'm a big fan of sci-fi, but I'm not going to like something just because it's sci-fi... it has to appeal to me first. Not a lot of people can write good sci-fi stories. A recent anime I can think of is Gargantia, I think that's a pretty good sci-fi anime...

I don't fit my demographic. I'm nearly twenty, but I can't freaking stand Seien, as it's just aggravating and distracts from the plot. Same reason I avoid ecchi, it's basically there so they can develop bodies but not personalities in characters, imo.

Also, I don't really care about genre. Yes, I prefer shounen, but, if it's well written, I'll probably enjoy it.

Well, only 2/17 of my top rated anime series/films are Shounens (3 if summer wars counts), and only 1 is a Seinen.

Seinen doesn't necessarily mean that there's fanservice/nudity. It means that there's adult themes. Death Note is a Seinen. Attack on Titan has Seinen qualities to it.

No, I'm 21 and my favorite demographic is probably Shounen. After that it doesn't matter. I like anime and have favorites in all demographics.

I don't care about the demographic as long as I find the series enjoyable.

Really? I guess I just don't mentally apply seien to those categories, I always assumed it meant semi-ecchi.

I like to think that I have wide-reaching tastes, but really most anime is made for guys and I watch pretty much all of that with a few crossovers into shoujo and josei. So I don't necessarily fit with an age demographic but I do with a gender one.

No it just means its target audience is adult males. While ecchi's target audience is often adult males, it isn't the only type of show targeted at adult males. Saying ecchi equals seinen is like saying all cats are mammals therefore all mammals are cats. I'd say there is probably a far larger variation in the types of work you'll find in Seinen than in any of the other demographics.

...

As for me I don't restrict myself to my demographic and find I like shows from any of the four main demographics. I tend to find comparatively more seinen works that I appreciate, but that doesn't stop me from liking stuff outside that demographic at all.

Thanks for telling me. I guess I just cross seinen off as a genre because the first few I read were ecchi, so I just assumed. This takes quite a few anime off my no list.

Most of my favorites fit quite neatly into the seinen category, considering that's where you'll find most of:

a) Anime that try to confuse you or make you think about complex ideas.
b) Romance/drama aimed at a male audience.

Generally speaking, fiction aimed at an older audience requires that more attention be paid to the characters, because older audiences expect a more carefully crafted product, and are discerning enough to notice when characters' motivations don't make sense. Since character is the most important thing for me the majority of time, yeah, I do largely fit my demographic.

I watch all demographics. My go to genre is romantic comedy, but I will watch shoujo, shounen, josei, or the demographic that I am technically in, seinen.

My kids and I joke that my tastes in entertainment have more in common with girls in their late teens to early twenties then they do with guys my own age. I refer to it as embracing my inner teenage girl, but not in a creepy way. A while ago the ads the pop up on my cell phone started to show me dating sites with hunky guys instead of sexy girls, but then I realized that it may be because I used the same google play account for my daughter's tablet as I did for my phone... So, yeah, it can't decide if I'm a middle aged man or a pre-teen girl, so it split the difference and decided I was a young woman.

The only types of shows I tend to avoid are shounen battle anime and hard-yoai. I don't mind a little shounen-ai and I will watch any romance if it doesn't feature sexual abuse without anyone thinking it's a problem as part of the package, or at least not if it portrays it in way that makes it seem appropriate. And I will watch shounen battle anime on occasion, I just tend to get bored with them.
