It's who anime or manga are aimed at.

Shoujo - girls between 10 and 18
Shounen - guys between 10 and 18
Josei - women 18 on up
Seinen - men 18 on up

Actually wikipedia says josei is 15 - 44 and for seinen 18 - 30.

I prefer action and sci-fi with my anime. If it has a good dramatic tone or maybe mystery I'm good with that as well. I tend to get annoyed with fan service whenever it's ridiculously blatant. So I guess I fit in my demographic somewhat. I don't watch anything remotely romantic anime or otherwise and I stay away from most comedies unless there is some action involved.

Hell, I fit into Shounen based on the no.s & type of anime I watch.

But I sure as heck am not a teen, nearly 24 and I still watch them. I also watch shoujo and seinen, as for josei, I haven't encountered any, or at least any I'm aware of. Funnily I've only heard of this term in the last 6 months.

Ultimately it's down to the story/characters of the show and what the person watching enjoys. If we all followed what guys should be watching or if girls didn't watch shounen, none of us would enjoy anime as much as we do now.

I find myself enjoying shows like Kamisama Kiss, Chihayafuru, and Kimi ni Todoke much more than I would have thought just a few years ago.

Although I do occasionally watch Shojo, I do mainly watch Shonen and Seinen stuff. I guess you could say I don't watching Shonen stuff at 27, on the other hand though I think it is important for every man to like Shonen anime no matter what age they become. Shonen anime is filled with dreams and adventure, if you like Shonen anime you are most likely not an asshole and a pleasant person to hang out with.

While everybody is obviously in the watch anything bunch, I'll say I Highly identify with my demographic.

While Attack on Titan, Death Note, Samurai 7, Samurai Champloo, and Neon Genesis are good and nice, they're all still deep into Shounen categories.

But the shows I tend to buy, are all Seinen first and foremost. Mysterious Girlfriend X, GTO, Berserk, Monster.(and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, which I'll argue is seinen despite all other gundams falling into Shounen)

Seinen is often a series with large swaths of Character development, romance, and Drama. It's further split into the Adult-ish Seinen and the Childish Seinen. Compare Berserk to Gunslinger girls. Both have the same focus and theme, but one has a greek tragedy type of men doing manly things like War and sex. While Gunslinger has young girls doing emotional things, like war and sex.

They often say Seinen and Shoujo have a weird overlap of tone, themes, and sometimes character design.

Madoka Magica easily counts as a Seinen, while Pretty Cure is strictly Shoujo, and the shows are nearly identical outside the overall deconstruction route.

um.

I watch Shonen. I do not really watch Shoujo. IF it's shoujo it had better NOT have ANY romance in it. I usually drop any anime with romance after 1-2 eps. I can't handle it. It's too .....ridiculous for me. I cannot stand romance, it grosses me out.

I watch Ecchi and Harem as long as there's no real romance. I prefer all female harems . I do not like men in my anime; they are too boring unless they are gay or cross-dressers~

I am a huge horror buff. I like anime like Ghost Hunt, Shiki, Another, Ergo Proxy

Also a fan of hentai as long as it's kink related.
