i usually get the basic policy that the job offers. i'm single with no kids. all you need is $10,000 to bury yourself if you die. if you have a family you want to get enough to pay off your house, and to bury yourself, pay off any outstandinding debts. $250,000 should be sufficient. only rich or famous people have million dollar policies. usually your fees are only $20 month if that if you are healthy. cut out 1 night of partying or eating out a month and you've paid your premium for the month. also if you get sick and can't work, you can borrow from your policy until you are well again.even if you don't get life insurance, purchase your own burial insurance. here in atlanta,ga it costs $1000 for creamation. funerals cost between $7000-$15,000.don't make your family suffer with trying to pay to bury you while they are grieving your death

This is exactly right.

The only point I would slightly disagree on is that larger policies aren't just for the rich. The larger policies can be quite helpful in a variety of circumstances (especially with since Estate taxes are so large). A $200,000 dollar policy won't pay a $200,000 debt; the government is going to take half before anyone else is paid.

Everyone should get the policy before they get old and lock in the price. It's pretty reasonable then. Otherwise, you're just screwing your family.

life insurance is tricky here's the break down and how it works. lets say your kid college kid -30K in debt come from a poor family and your kid doesnt have life insurance. even if it is 20 buck a month.

your kid is popular gets drunk and overdose on drugs and dies...his debt goes to parents, funeral 15k around other expensive medical autopsy etc.. averages around 30K so your looking at 60K for the loss of your son. or daughter i dont know..

the trick.. life insurance some only cover natural death meaning if you were murder or overdose drug you'd still be payin for no reason lol.
besure to read the bottomline kids ;)

btw i sell volcano insurance anyone want lol

Are you serious?

I have a $30K debt right now from college, you mean to say if I died from an accident, that debt would go to my family? I didn't know this...

How does that work though? How would they force my family to pay when they never signed any contract?

What is volcano insurance? Is that for people who live near volcanoes?

of course and having a family shouldnt factor into having it cause when you die some one has to foot the bill for your final costs of your funeral being buried or cremated isnt cheap you know. and even if you dont have a wife or husband then that cost just falls back onto your parents or brothers and sisters or whatever next of keen you have. life insurance is just to make sure people you love dont suffer financially because of you demise. its emotional enough to lose a loved one but then to be out nearly 5,000. that just makes it even worse
dying isn't cheap my friends :p

The thing is, I'm not one of those people who empty out their bank account on his payday.
I leave some backup funds so they can use that for my funeral...

Thanks for the replies though everyone. I never considered about funerals, it's a good point.

as long as you have some form of money set aside for your final cost then i suppose its not necessary for life insurance. i guess it all really depends on how comfortable you feel with that amount you leave behind. i mean obviously if your single you dont need to leave behind as much as being married cause when your married you want it to be enough to help your spouse pay bills help send yours kids to college all that good stuff. but if its just you and you feel more then comfortable with the amount you have prepared then no i guess when you put it like this in certain cases it wouldnt be necessary.

I only have enough life insurance to cover my funeral and any other expenses. So my relatives don't have to do it. I think it's a fairly responsible and nice thing to do, but I guess they also don't really have to take responsibility for you when you're done.

Only enough to cover my cremation. I'll be damned if I let anybody make money off of my death.

Only sort of: I plan to get cryopreserved when I die, and a life insurance policy is how you pay for that if you're not a millionaire.

Other than that... if the entire planet was destroyed when I died, it wouldn't make the slightest difference to me. Life insurance is pointless.

The first person was talking about the debts they would have from burying you, but I don't see how they got 15k + 30k= 60K so I would not really trust their numbers...

Anyways this covers the basics of what happens to your debts when you die: http://www.legalzoom.com/wills-faq/assets-debts-wills.html

Just a quick note, the link I posted only has to do with American law so if you live somewhere other than USA you should look up what it is for you >.>

I don't see myself getting one in this lifetime, so I wish those people would leave me alone.

I don't see the point of paying for something, and then when you die, you can't really use it...
even if i have children, they should work to earn a living, not live off my dead body.

Does anyone here consider getting one?

I had life insurance even though I don't have kids or even a partner. My mother was the beneficiary of mine and my brother if she died before me. Life insurance isn't really about living off your dead body but providing for those you provide for now. If have small children who are too young to work, life insurance means they are looked after. Same goes for elderly parents who you might be financially supporting or sick siblings etc. However, if you are not supporting anyone while you are alive then the most you need is funeral insurance that covers the disposal of your dead body so that it doesn't put your family out. Funerals can get expensive you know.

PS. I don't have life insurance at the moment because my current job doesn't offer it. I had my last life insurance through my employer. I would most definitely tick yes again for life insurance because I do want to make sure my mother is taken care off should something happen to me.

PSS. I don't have any debt but yes if you have debts and don't want to cripple your family with it, make sure to get life insurance that covers at least the amount of your debt because if you don't, your family will be on the hook for it.

but think of the wild life your dead carcass would attract a wolf could try to cross the road to munch on that rotting corpse and get hit by a car

In that case, I would blame the car and/or the wolf.
