Eeeeeh, if you're going to fault FF6 for it's technical age, you might as well praise FF12 for being "better 3d than 7"

Age is age, and animated sprites does not a good story make. A good story is a good story. And FF6 has a strong combat system with a memorable art style. Threatening Kefka may not have been, but he was entertaining and pivotal to the story. From the first Scene in the desert to his dying scenes on that rock in space...or something, Kefka was a driving force in FF6. You spend a good chunk of FF7 going "herp derp Sephiroth's was here herp derp look at what he did to those mooks herp derp blood herp everywhere derp"

I liked the party in FF7, but they all felt like reskins of the same character using the same combat system to do the same stuff! FF6 has class! No character was the same as another, some had no point as fighters! Using Locke in combat was as dumb as using your toothbrush to clean a toilet.

But in his character-segments he was a dashing fine rogue, sneaking around and out smarting his foes.

FF7 has some major cool things in it, 3D pre-rendered cutscenes, massiveset pieces, several amazing mini-games. But you know how they got that budget? FF6's success! They had to top it, if not the story, the game itself.

I feel FF6 would make a far stronger remake than FF7, simply due to the stronger and less-linear story. When your heroine Terra was gone, you focused on everybody else. When the group was separated, you had to play everybodys story one by one until you all met up again. No shot cuts, no behind the scenes for a while. You had to guide them, and you weren't them.

I'd like to hear some positive stuff about Xenosaga however, I'm still stuck on the opening portion of the game. It's just...that Old-school we-don't-give-a-damn english dub and that take-yo-time walking around doing NOTHING! At least FFX had the balls to throw me right in the action! Xenosaga kept trying to sell religion..I think, something about Space christians worshiping a giant egypt statue....I don't know. What makes it so great? I've always wanted to get in it but god damn it's got a high barrier of entry. Then you have the poor poor reputation of Xenosaga 2 and 3 and the absurd combat system age.....I'd love to give it another try but what does it have that I can't find done better elsewhere?

Xenosaga has the best story of any game that has ever been made. Episode 2 did catch a lot of flack for it's change of VA's, character models, and combat (which I agree with), but Episode 3 fixed all of that and then some. Episode 3 is far and away the best of the trilogy. But you need to play all 3 in order to get the whole story. The combat in Episode 2 has a steep learning curve, but is easily abused once you figure it out.

I can't tell you anything about the story without ruining it. It is very complex, and once you get to disc 2 of Episode 3 it will blow your balls off!

And yes, I WILL fault FF6 on technical aspects when a game that was made in 1986 had more detail in the battle system. Especially if you put FF6 next to Chrono Trigger. If you want to talk about 16-bit done right, Chrono Trigger is a timeless masterpiece! FF6 can't hold a candle to it's greatness. That proves that Square could've done better. They just chose not to.

Epic triple post.

I assume you had an SNES, which means you missed out on all the epic Genesis RPGs. Phantasy Star 4 in particular, which is way better than FF6. They released around the same time. PS4 had 3 planets, 2 satellites, and a castle in space, combination techs (kinda like Chrono Trigger), 3 different vehicles and vehicle-based combat, anime-style cut scenes, plenty of references to the prequels (even the black sheep PS3), music remixes from the Master System era, ANIMATED ENEMIES, an epic story, robots, boob jokes, strippers, you name it, its got it.

I'm seeing some JRPG love in here, lots of it.

My largest complaint with Xenosaga is the steep as all hell introduction curve. Similar to things like Original Gundam and it's 150 episodes of Universal Century story, or perhaps Angel and the fact you need to watch the first 3 season of Buffy the Vampire slayer to understand half of the show.

You don't simply "play" Xenosaga.

I actually had a Genesis, while my Grandparents had the SNES. My aunt would buy and own SNES games while I was stuck with a crappy Genesis. It didn't have epic RPG"s for me, I'm quite a bit younger than you so...over the head. I didn't get into RPGS until I'll say FFX, which finally let me delve in. Since then I've picked up a few Final Fantasys and other such RPG's, but JRPG's are held in a rather negative light right now. Some just didn't age as well as I'd hoped. Those that do however, I'll be vocal about how well they aged.

Best RPGs:

Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 10
Xenosaga (All 3 games)
Xenoblade Chronicles
Lost Odyssey
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Vesperia
Persona 3
Persona 4
Ar tonelico 2
Phantasy Star 4
Shining Force 2
Wild ARMs 5
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Super Mario RPG
Dragon Quest 8

Probably not considered an RPG but:

Landstalker

Those are just the best of the best. There's a lot of great RPGs that aren't on that list, like the Atelier series (Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Ayesha), Star Ocean series, Eternal Sonata, Shining in the Darkness, Arc Rise Fantasia. I could go on for days...

Here's a video of me playing a battle against an I.P.D. in Ar tonelico 2 and stacking up as many supers as I could in one go. AT2 is amazing, and has a lot of anime in it. It's part RPG, part visual novel. It also has a boatload of sexual innuendo in it.

So I just beat Megaman 10. Finally. I had a retro itch last night, so I decided to run Megaman 10 from start to finish. I bought it when it first came out, but never beat it.
