I also think that they did a horrible job on the Cirque Du Freak movie, I knew I as going to hate it, I had read a number of the first books, not all, but the movie was a jumbled mess of crap that in the movie took place within a week, while parts from the book happened after years, the list goes on and on and on, etc.

The original released version of The Outsiders. I still love the movie, but they cut out a lot of parts in the beginning, and the actor for Ponyboy was kind of... apathetic? There wasn't a lot of emotion.

i had read all of the precy jackson books which were pretty decent, and the movie just didn't do it any justice. they butchered the entire storyline.

To me, the absolute worst book to movie adaptation has to be the 1997 Starship Troopers movie.
It completely distorted, or ignored the themes and story of the novels in favor of the director pushing his own politics which have just about zero to do with anything that is actually discussed or occurs in the book.

The Golden Compass... that made me so sad when i attempted to watch it. I then spent the next few weeks telling myself that it was all just a horrible nightmare and that movie doesn't really exist.

The books were never high art to begin with but Circ Du Freak and Eragon had really bad adaptations.

The Twilight movies are terrible because they're faithful adaptations of terrible books...

Essentially everything from the Percy Jackson series, I Am Number Four and Tomorrow When the War Began. Reading the books I knew the movie would star mostly an all-teen cast but damn, I can never bring myself to like them. It always feels so amateur. :s

From the first post, not only was the same-titled "I am Legend" off but so were the other remakes of that book, that is "Omega Man" and the TV-movie adaptation, mostly because of the terrible miscasting of Vincent Price as the hero. Considering "I Am Legend" probably can be considered the dawn of the modern Zombie / modern Vampire genres, it's really unfortunate. Not that Omega Man isn't fun, it's just got next to nothing to do with the original.

There are a lot of books that just aren't meant to be movies. I more sympathize with people trying to translate some things to the screen. I would say as a rule: never think you've read a book if you've seen a movie. It goes with "never think you understand a historical event if it was in a movie", and "never think you understand love from movies" and so on ... basically, if it's in a movie, it's probably not accurate to anything.

In that vein, though, I'd say the recent attempts at a book-to-movie that should have been a slam dunk, but failed completely by dint of completely mangling the whole point of the books and keeping only the name have to be the efforts at "Earthsea". The S. Ghibli effort was well animated but turned the plot into drivel, and the SyFy fiasco had nothing in common but the name. They both just ripped the name and left the smoking carcass so they could throw the pelt over the movies.
