Actually sexuality in Japan isn't THAT accepted. Or more accurately TALKING about sex and physical intimacy are a big taboo, wich means to "fun" statistics like 40% of japaneese couples never having sex. In many respects Japan is even more prudish than the US, but the specific taboos are very different.

A for women putting up with it, it's not like they have much of a choice. Japan is rather disgustingly sexist.

I am sick of these disgusting prudes complaining about sexuality. I feel like they are jealous and very very lacking in self-confidence, so much so that they have to bash everything.

I am very proud of myself, for one. And I very much LOVE 'sexual' anime. I am not afraid of it. It's really nice to have in a world full of annoying hyper-feminists, prudes, shamers of sexual pride, and people with no self confidence.

EDIT:
I forgot to include the 'white knight' men whom take the side of said hyper-feminist women, I find that to be LAUGHABLE.
The amount of ignorance from this single post is off the charts. No one has complained about sexual content in general being a problem in anime. The problem is how it is used. When not used for comedic purposes, gigantic bouncing chests, panty shots, and so on are focused on to excite the viewer in order to get them to buy their product. They aren't trying to respect the female body, they are exploiting it to make more money. I, as a writer, find this despicable. The characters I make are important to me. Although they may not be real, I make sure to respect the idea of that character. Using them as tools by whoring them out for an extra buck is unforgivable in my opinion. This is why I stopped watching Fairy Tail. It had 48 episodes of little to no fan service, and then out of no where, the writer just didn't care and sexualized them as much as he could.

Anybody else noticing that thirtysomethings like us really aren't bothered by these sorts of things, for the most part?

Having done my due search through the forums, the only topic I could find was on the over-sexualization of females in anime, but that thread was locked over a year ago and I want this one to cover a topic that is somewhat different.

Although I haven't been in the anime community long, it is apparent to me that there is rampant hypersexualization across the board, from the shows themselves to merchandise to fan art. Now, obviously this is much more pervasive with regards to women, but it does exist for men as well. I'm a little troubled by this, and let me explain why.

When I watch anime, I am often seeking out the greatest good I can find in it. I'm not really a feminist or anything, but I like female characters who can stand on their own two feet. And I also like male characters who aren't just out looking for sex, but have higher motivations. And so, when I find good characters that I enjoy watching, I form a certain emotional connection with them and a certain expectation and ideal in my head.

EXAMPLE 1: Thus, when I see things like this http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/08/26-1/chara-ani-prepares-sword-art-online-asuna-new-wives-always-say-yes-figure it really bothers me. I really liked Asuna in SAO. She was not, I felt ever presented as a sex object (that's right, not even in the second arc, because Sugou's lust was obviously portrayed as evil). She was a fighter, survivor and a pure figure. So seeing her in a clearly sexualized figure (figure title, position, blush on her cheeks) really bothers me because of the ideal I have for her. This continues in fan art and, I'm sure, fan fiction (from which I plan to stay far away).

EXAMPLE 2: It also bugs me when I encounter things like Junichiro's password and fetish in Blast of Tempest, which is my all time favorite anime. What is mostly a dramatic, mature and brilliantly constructed show runs into a stupid password like "Boobs that don't bounce aren't boobs at all." It's out of character for the show, but it's still there.

EXAMPLE 3: Just to show that this goes beyond the female sexualization, take a gander at this photo.
Again, sexualization of a very non-sexualized character in the story. It, in some ways, damages my view of Mahiro as a character and turns him into an object (same thing applies to example 1).

In short, what is up with the hypersexualization that surrounds anime and what are people's thoughts on it? And let's go beyond the cliche answer, "It's Japanese and they're all pervs over there." Some of these shows are not sexualized, yet you still see it in fan art, etc. We're (for the most part) an American audience; we come from a different culture and are not bound by Japan's culture.

I couldn't agree more on pushing sex boundaries. There are many anime that would do well without the need over pushing the limits of our smaller group of viewers who like less sexualization in anime. Now there are many types of anime and you know which ones are pure fan service and others that are supposed to be not so fan service like.

Example for me on ruining stories or anime would be Busou Shinki anime. I love Busou Shinki ever since 2007 back when it was just a figure collecting and building hobby and online game called Battle Rondo. Last year they brought the anime to life which many of us were excited and yet we ended up with a slice of life harem. There were good parts and there were parts that were terrible. There was a really great OVA previous to the anime called Moon Angel <busou shinki>, this one was very well done real well done with battles and had no weird sexualization of my 12cm friends.

Sadly as many have and will repost sex sells and those of us who dislike are just a small minority who care. I don't mind fan service series if that's what I'm there for and what was advertised. Just wish some stories would lose the aspects of "rape" and such oddities.

And?

I don't care. They can use sex appeal to make people buy things, because it's working on me. lol

I think people are mad that there is too much over sexual scenes in anime. I don't complain I either watch it or not. I see a lot of feminists raging mad that these girls are shown as dumb, young, pretty, and have a lot of sexual power which they will never have. MGTOW for life. Live and let die.

If "hypersexualization" is something that bothers you, the simple solution is to ignore it and move on with your life. You can let it both you all you want, but complaining about it on an online forum isn't going to change anything. It seems as though you're saying that sexual fanart and fanfiction shouldn't be created by fans and that companies shouldn't make sexual merchandise, simply because it offends you. The thing is though, you actually have to search for sexual fanart and fanfiction, and most places that sell merchandise have the more sexual/provocative merchandise in another section you actually have to physically go to. And it's pretty pathetic to try to claim that people just shouldn't even create this kind of stuff because even the thought of it disgusts you.

I love how you speak mostly of Blast of Tempest, and how it's a "dramatic, mature and brilliantly constructed show," yet you completely ignored the fact that Junichiro's obsession with boobs is not the only sexual reference/image in the show.
My point is, the sexual references and images are put into the show because it's so serious. It adds a comedic undertone so the viewers don't feel overwhelmed by the dramatic tone of the show and can have a little comic relief. If you don't like it, or think the show needed a different form of comic relief, then that's your opinion. I personally was okay with the sexual undertones, but I guess I would be since one of my favorite anime is Highschool of the Dead.

Basically, what I'd like to say to everyone that complains about sexual content in anime, manga, or any type of media is that it's never going to go away and if you don' t like it, you don't have to watch the anime, read the manga, or engage yourself in any media with sexual content. And if a show you like takes a sexual turn that ends up disappointing you, well, disappointment happens, and I've had many series (anime, manga, books, TV, movies, ect) disappoint me. But rather than go on the internet and complain about it, I move on with my life and find something else that doesn't disappoint me.

They complain about girls being portrayed negatively, yet that's all they focus on. They don't bother to mention that there are a lot of shows that have strong-willed women that are able to take care of themselves. San from Princess Mononoke and Saki from Shin Sekai Yori are very good examples of female characters that are very strong and able to take care of themselves. People like to only focus on the oversexualized characters in order to prove their point.

I know there are a lot of women that are strong and independent in anime. This reminds of how here in the west women complains about how women are portrayed in video game that are made by men for men. If you have a problem with certain anime characters how about you make your own anime or strictly watch the shows that are not over sexual. Women cry and scream to try to get what they want. Hell I want every beautiful women on earth to walk around naked but its not going to happen. Oh and Yaoi need I say more.
